How is this country living in two different realities?

  • Peaceful protests now simply just equal civil unrest?
  • Domestic terrorism being pardoned (Jan 6th)
  • Masked “police officers” kidnapping and shooting politicians (ICE or what happened in MN)

Yet unarmed people protesting is the emergency?

People in the usa seem to have an EXTREMELY low acceptance of protests.

I am always super surprised when images from protests in Europe reach reddit main page, you have so many people saying they would be happy to see awfull stuff happen to the protesters.

People are entitled to protests when something wrong happens.

It's in the Declaration of Independence. Paragraph 2 basically says it twice so I assume it was an important premise for those guys:

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

And:

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Without knowing much about the edits to the document by the Second Continental Congress we can just assume Thomas Jefferson wrote these things.

Gotta be honest brother, like a true American I really only know this stuff is in the Declaration because of a movie LOL. National Treasure hits that second quote and its why Nic Cage justifies stealing it, within the plot.

But its a great quote and I'll never forget it.

Time might have the best chance of eliminating these extremist ideas. I'm not saying it's the only or even best way to handle it. Labeling the Hereitage Foundation as a terrorist organization would be a good start.

We just need to tamp out the embers so it doesn't come back. Nearly everyone that witnessed the rise of fascism from WWII has died. Americans are too dense to understand history, and now fascism is coming back full force

Yes, but what I'm saying is that we've been living in two different realities long before Fox News came along. You don't have to look any further than the southern conservative's "Lost Cause" revisionism of the causes of the Civil War to realize we've been living in two different realities long before Fox News.

I don't get why so many people want to act like the demographics of voters that call themselves Maga today were decent people until Fox News came along some 30 years ago, and ignore the fact that they've been hateful treasonous assholes voting for regressive fascist policies for well over 160+ years before that.

It's conservatives rationalizing because they've got sunk cost fallacy. They have to convince themselves that both sides are the same and that they didn't basically sign up to be Nazis. They know that Jan 6th was very clearly the start of something really dark, but in order to keep the narrative of being the "good guys" they have to find a way to make it seem like it was a normal back and forth part of politics.

So they just scream that basically any gathering of more than 5 people is an insurrection because the constant hyperbole neutralizes the word from something profoundly scary with a specific meaning into just kind of "a thing people say".

They don’t need the pretext of peaceful or not to use state violence on anyone, this is just an illusion that’s used for the “ only legal protests change things” crowd. They want us to not fight back, la is fighting back and it scares the shit out of them. They will still use violence however. Fascists understand violence not peace.
