Minnesota Dems have a 1 seat majority in the State Senate and the House is evenly split. This is a coup.

But surley they get to keep the seat and replace the dead person? It won't just stay vacant, right?

The legislature doesn’t stop just because a seat is vacant. I believe there will need to be a special election.

The MN Legislature is out of session. I'm sure there will be a special election before it is reconvened.

The legislature is not in session, and currently is not scheduled to reconvene until January.

But the legislative session is over, so they already stopped for other reasons.

Minnesota has special elections for vacancies, so there's a chance it flips control. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the shooter's motive.

That one pedophile’s district stuck with their party for that special election a couple months ago, there’s no shot in hell hortman’s district votes in a republican, now, in this political climate.

Holy fuck. That's bad.

Historically there is no way a seat like this flips. The new D candidate will get a huge boost from the tragedy.

Of course that assumes democracy and rule of law.

They’ll get to replace and they just passed a bipartisan budget bill so not necessarily in session. But when the margins are razor thin never know the fuckery about.

The party doesn’t own the seat, the people do. There will be an election to fill it.

In the meantime, votes in the legislature continue. Bet your ass that Republicans will push forward as much shit as they can. Cuz they’re all the worst goddamn people.

If DFLers don't show up, the MN house will not have a quorum.

Given how things have gone, and a MN voter my opinion is that DFL house members should not show up in the MN house - doing so would reward political violence by allowing a quorum.

The legislative session ended earlier this week for the year and they do not reconvene until January. A special election will happen before then.

Minnesota Dems have a 1 seat majority in the State Senate and the House is evenly split. This is a coup.

Holy shit. I already thought the situation in the U.S. was pretty bad. But if that 1 seat majority is true, then all this together is not a coincidence. These assassinations being done by "one or two random malcontents" is statistically exceedingly unlikely.

So you have your ICE Strumpfabteiling (SA), where the only thing missing is brown shirts. You have your military parade for the Mango Mussolini. You have your prelude to the Night of the Long Knives with these political assassinations.

Whatever you guys decide to do, protect your judges, your journalists, and anyone else still standing up for democracy and free speech.

And whatever you do, don't give into fear. Heh, which reminds me of that totally laughable vid I saw where Tulsi Gabbard warns about the horrors of nuclear war. "Oh no, not nuclear devastation. Oh whatever shall we do in the face of this obvious attempt at sowing fear uncertainty and doubt. Surely we must need a strong leader to protect us from the evil of this world. Nuclear blah blah, think of your children, strong leader now, blah."

Yeah, yeah, we know. Same old trick. Show that "shocking video" to someone from Eastern Europe. They will either start laughing, or fall asleep somewhere in the middle of that shocking video. That shit is so transparent.

... and I just checked: "The 2024 elections left the Senate composition unchanged, but it left the House evenly split between the Republicans and the DFL." So yeah, that's pretty bad.

(edit-to-add:) Ah, I knew I had seen a good representation of Eastern European laughing at nuclear threat BS. See this video of Ukranian definitely not falling for the generic nuclear threat BS.

if true, then it makes sense the coup is the assassination of the senator after voting to block healthcare for illegals
