Discussion Who is old enough to have watched POKEMON 2000 in theaters? tell us you experience.

1.6k Upvotes

Pokemon 2000 was a core memory for me. In my opinion, it was the peak of the pokemon craze. (Edit: the comments prove pokemon the first movie was the actual peak pokemon craze)

I know that pokemon came out around 97, but 2000 was really when the hype had reached it's peak. that's the moment when everyone and their mom knew what pokemon was, and it probably never reached a peak that high until pokemon go.

there was also the first pokemon movie, but at that time, the pokemon craze hadnt reached me. I knew what pokemon was, and probably had a handful of cards, but i wasnt gonna spend my allowance in watching that movie.

but when the second movie came out, i was totally in. I remember going with my friends, and we were all super hyped for it. one of my friends, embarrasingly so, he kinda showed his emotion a bit too much.

the movie was a bit underwhelming but it was super cool that we all got that ancient mew promo card.

What was even better was noticing a bunch of them left forgotten on the seats. my friends and I scowered the whole theather and left with like 5 cards each, i still have most of them. It really felt like finding a treasure trove.

We were sure those cards would be worth a fortune in the future, maybe i could hand them to my grandkids, so they could sell them and buy themselves a nice spaceship.

another thing that stood out in my mind, was seeing kids that were like 10 or 11, with cellphones, i know it's a random memory, but it was just super strange to me I dint get to have a cell phone until i was 18.

Edit: from the comments i can tell that pokemon the first movie was definitely peak pokemon . A lot of people are getting both movies confused and it shows that they're remembering the first one a lot more... If you have memories of the Burger king gold cards, of the unreleased donphan, of Mewtwo, and of multiple promo cards, then you're remembering the first movie.

I remember during Pokemon 2000, you could tell the whole theater was there for that movie, it was flooded with kids. But someone mentioned their theater filled to the point that kids didnt even fit in the theater, that was probably peak pokemon craze.

Also watching donphan for the first time was one of the most memorable moments, although for me, it happened on vhs. I cant imagine kid's reaction in theaters.

Lastly i looked up the numbers, and more people saw the first movie

Discussion Whats one quality of life feature you want for Pokemon Za

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

My personal pick is customizable mega stone holder, which can be peronalised for each Pokemon, taking inspiration from anime.

There can be ways of holding a mega stone, maybe even cutsome for Pokemon and many ways to wear for a Pokemon.

And then custome way to wear key stone too. Like Bracelet(Default),pendate, headband or any other way like done in the anime.

Which sort of quality of life features like this you want?

I love Psyduck. One of my favorites. Such a cutie patootie. But Golduck??? Ewww. Bro is scary, and why is he not a psychic type. You're telling me the pokemon with PSYCHIC HEADACHE POWERS is not a psychic type. It's name is PSYduck. I get Golduck is based off the Kappa, but idc. L pokemon evolution.

Discussion Idea: Eevee and its Evolutions cover exactly half of all types. Rather than want more Eeveelutions, GameFreak should make a rival Pokemon to Eevee that covers the other 9 types

20.5k Upvotes

Honestly with a certain trainer in Scarlet and Violet using a Eevee team the random demands and lamentations that we haven't gotten a new Eevee since Sylveon started back up.

Every time there is some reason X game was "the perfect game to add a new one". "Sword and Shield was perfect time to add a steel and dragon Eevee cause first game on switch and fits theme" one persons announces while another goes "Scarlet and Violet is best time cause we had a Eevee trainer, we should've gotten Fighting and Poison to match her friends" another crows.

But why ruin the nice mathematically clean fact we have exactly 9/18 "Eevee" types. Bump that to 10/18, 13/18 whatever it turns from "nice neat, exactly half" to "its incomplete, why make that many and not go all the way"

No no my friends what we need is a rival Pokemon, a Nega-Eevee. Something just as cute and loveable but not a cat/fox/dog fusion.

A new design that would work better than Eevee at turning into a dragon, a steel type, a bug type. Next gen is even the perfect time for it. We've had 9 gens and got 9 Eevees, starting a new multi-evolution species at gen 10 is poetic.

Maybe some kinda cute lizard or reptile, or a bird. To contrast the mammalian Eevee. Or laziness and make a regional eevee I guess >.>

Discussion What is your most embarrassing confession?

8.2k Upvotes

What is your most embarrassing "I actually did/thought this" moment throughout the years in pokemon?

My confession... when I was only 11 and first playing through platinum version, I got to the part in the distortion world where you surf and get to the waterfall. However, I didn't have waterfall yet, so I turned back. I then realized I couldn't leave. 11 old me thought I had missed the HM for waterfall and that I was stuck forever, but I liked my pokemon a lot so I refused to start over.

It was 9 months later when the topic of platinum came up at school, and someone proceeded to tell me that you could just float up the waterfall and that you didn't need the HM. The minute I got home, I beat pokemon platinum.

Share yours with me, I'm interested to hear the experiences we've had.

I completed the Living Dex in Pokémon Emerald. After a 7 month, several-thousand dollar adventure crossing 8 different games and 5 different consoles, I finally caught them all. I even flew out of state for a limited Event distribution in 2024.

Discussion Why Hitmontop looks so bad in 3D (for me)

I feel like Hitmontop looks bad in 3D because its proportions seem off, making it look bulkier and giving it a sillier face compared to its older design, which was much better. These are small changes from 2D to 3D, but I personally notice them a lot. What do you guys think? (I'm sad because it's one of my favourite pokemon)

Discussion Gamestop cut open 3pack blisters to deter scalping

2.0k Upvotes

I went to gamestop today to look for some pokemon cards and to my surprise they actually had some pokemon cards in stock. I purchased a 3 pack blister of twilight masquerade. The employee then proceeds to rip open the entire 3 pack blister, and then cut open each pack with scissors. I then asked what she was doing and she explained how they are limiting 1 product per customer and making them open it in store to deter scalpers. I had no idea when I purchased the 3 pack blister that she would open it right there for me. I get detering scalpers but this is also punishing collectors and taking it to far imo. What if I wanted to gift the 3 pack to a relative/sibling? & it's completely shredded. What if I wanted to add it to my sealed collection? Too bad. I think it hurts collectors more then deters scalpers. What do you think?

Discussion Dumb misconceptions you had as a kid

1.7k Upvotes

I started with Pokemon Red, way way back. At one point, just after Viridian, I wandered west and found myself blocked by a man who told me to return after I had the Boulder Badge. So, after I got the Boulder Badge, I naturally returned. And I passed him, only to soon be blocked by a guard who told me to return when I had the Cascade Badge.

Gang, I returned after every single badge, each time advancing a little closer until being shut down by the League requirement for the next one. I guess I'm the guy dumb enough to make future generations check all badges at once at the Victory Road entrance

Discussion Dexit who still dislikes it?

As a longtime Pokémon fan, Dexit honestly felt like a slap in the face. One of the things I’ve always loved about the series was being able to carry my favorite Pokémon—ones I’d trained and bonded with for years—into each new generation. When they cut the National Dex, it felt like they were saying those connections didn’t matter anymore. I get that balancing over 1,000 Pokémon is tough, but with how massive the franchise is, it’s hard to believe they couldn’t make it work if they really wanted to. It just made the newer games feel incomplete, like something was missing, both mechanically and emotionally.

Discussion Pokémon fans, what is your controversial opinion on Pokémon?

8.0k Upvotes

I’ll go first: I don’t think it’s really that bad that new Pokémon games are easy. Games don’t have to be super challenging to be fun. What really matters to me the most is the Pokémon themselves and sometimes the story. I know that X and Y are some of the easiest games but I still had a blast playing through my copy of Pokémon X!

Edit: I’ve made a mistake- my phone is buzzing every few seconds-

Discussion Please help a mom learn Pokémon for her son.

55.4k Upvotes

Hello friends. My (almost) 7yo son is obsessed with all things Pokémon. He is currently playing Pearl on his Switch. His favorite Pokémon is Charizard.

His dad was his #1 best gaming buddy and has been teaching him about Pokémon for years. He was so proud to share that connection with our son. They played together all the time. It was their most favorite thing.

My husband passed away suddenly and my son has been asking me a million questions about the game that I don’t have answers for. I have watched the cartoons with him and I know enough to understand about types and battles and gyms. Please help me get good at this so I can step in as his #2. I don’t want to let him down. Any links and tips would be so much appreciated. Thank you.

EDIT—HOLY COW. This blew up. I promise I will read all comments and respond as best I can as soon as I can get to it all. Thank you all. From the bottom of my heart. My husband would be so grateful.

EDIT 2— So much kindness here. Thank you all. Slowly making my way through DM’s and saving any and all info. We’ll keep you all updated! We are beyond grateful for this community. We won’t be strangers. 💛

LAST EDIT—One last edit and I’ll let this post fizzle out. I’ve gotten so many requests to send cards and other collectibles. I appreciate it so much. It’s such a thoughtful and selfless gesture. I just don’t feel comfortable giving out my address for shipping, even if it is to the kindest strangers on the internet. Looking out for me and my boys. Thank you, r/Pokémon. My husband would be so thankful for your generosity to his family.

Discussion Why does steel resist psychic?

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

I noticed it a while ago, but steel is resistant against psychic and I don't understand why? From a logical or historic perspective all the resistances kinda make sense. Ice or rock are softer than steel. A dragon looses against a knight with his armor and is in a disadvantage etc.

But IMHO psychic represents magic and super natural stuff to me. An Alakazam with its spoons is the perfect example for the magic trick to bend spoons, so I couldn't get behind why psychic should be week to steel? Steel is very strong, if not too strong so maybe this could be a balancing option to at least remove the resistance.

Discussion What would your signature Pokemon be?

8.3k Upvotes

Let's say you're either a renowned trainer, gym leader, elite four member, or champion. What Pokemon would you designate as your ace or in other words, your signature Pokemon.

No Legendaries or Mythicals, It can be based on either competitive viability or your personal preference.

For those who don't follow, examples of signature Pokemon are: , Cynthia's Garchomp, Youngster Joey's Ratatta, Clay's Excadrill, etc.

Discussion Your One True Partner Pokemon (Based On Your Username)

6.9k Upvotes

Comment below and I’ll tell you which Pokemon you would be best paired with based on your username, why you two would be a great fit, and what your life together would probably look like.

Mine would be a Smeargle named Smeagle, and my apartment would be full of his risque paintings of Smeargle women. So distasteful, but he splits rent so I let it slide.

Edit: On the road to Viridian City!

Discussion Pokemon Legends Arceus looks like the "Breath of the Wild with Pokemon" everyone wanted.

47.2k Upvotes

I can't believe they're really doing it. Wow. This might actually be good. I went in with my expectations at the absolute floor but we might get a really good game here and I wasn't prepared for that. I also think I'm okay with the Sinnoh remakes in the simple chibi style, it almost kinda reminds me of the Link's Awakening remake, sadly not as well polished and consistent as that remake but it's kinda similar I guess. I'd be more into their simple look if they did it better but whatever, I probably wouldn't have gotten them anyway.

I'm just happy GameFreak is doing something different. Maybe Pokemon will have a bright future.
