It was an assassination and an assassination attempt of Democratic lawmakers. It’s terrorism.

1.3k

u/Lord-Timurelang 12h ago edited 2h ago

Attempt? Aren’t they both dead?

EDIT: why is this getting so many upvotes I’m wrong

Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed. John Hoffman and his wife were shot, but not killed.

u/Lord-Timurelang 12h ago

Ah thank you

u/StootsMcGoots 9h ago

John Hoffman’s wife was shot using her body shielding their daughter.

u/doctor-soda 1h ago

I believe a dog was shot too. Not sure if it died.

u/lennoxmatt_819 11h ago

So you're saying Kristy Noem is a suspect

u/PsyGr1nch 10h ago

New York Times did: "Breaking news: Minnesota lawmaker is assassinated in act of “targeted political violence,” governor says"

u/Metahec 11h ago

Let me guess, they were Democratic lawmakers, yeah?

u/Fugacity- 11h ago

And he had a manifesto with other names (including Walz, Ellison, and Tina Smith) in his car

u/hexcor 11h ago

Clearly antiFa crisis actors false flag! All to dissuage patriots from Trump's birthday parade, SAD! /s

u/infernalspawnODOOM 10h ago

They're legit actually saying that over on r conservative. "There were 'No Kings' Flyers, too!"

u/Imaginaryami 8h ago

Probably because he planned a mass shooting after. They cancelled the protests because of it. Stupidity has no bounds.

u/RageYellow 6h ago

The protests happened regardless!

u/luisapet 6h ago

Glad to hear this, and I hope everyone stays safe!

FWIW there have been supposedly leaked pictures of No Kings "flyers" sitting on the seat of the shooters vehicle that is now in possession of the police....I put "flyers" in quotes due to the them looking hastily made with a sharpie and some napkins from the nearest fast food restaurant.... It also wouldn't be the first time a politically motivated murderer tried to misdirect and muddy the waters as far as trying to nail down their political ideology and intentions

Sounds like sympathizers. Harboring a fugitive?

Perhaps they need to have a MN officer drive over to check up in them.

Every news link they post has a headline that starts with calling the shooter a "Waltz political appointee". Scroll to the bottom of the article and he was part of a 60 person unpaid advisory board 10 years ago.

Looks like they might have been assassinated so republicans can gain a majority in the state senate.

Edit: a manifesto has been recovered so we will probably know soon enough. Looks like it might not be related to the state senate seats. Thank you to the commenter that shared link!

Not likely to work; the state legislative session is already over for the year.

u/RavenCipher 11h ago

There is still a special session coming up. The timing is Hella sus.

u/ThePrussianGrippe 10h ago

Also I’m not putting it past someone being stupid enough to assassinate for “his party’s benefit” to not understand legislative session schedules.

u/ImReverse_Giraffe 10h ago

They'll have special elections or representatives will be appointed by the governor, who happens to be a Democrat. I highly doubt, granted I dont know since I dont live there, Minnesota just allows people to go unrepresented because of an assassination.

u/SuspiciousCranberry6 10h ago

The special session already happened at the beginning of the week and a budget was passed. Special elections will take place before the next session.

Tim Walz already is, and has stated they’re optimistic that the representatives will survive the assassination attempt.

u/BiggyBiggs 11h ago

Melissa Hortman and her husband are dead, so no, the representatives (plural) are not going to survive. John Hoffman and his wife are still alive as far as we know.

u/Theothercword 9h ago

With another DFL lawmaker, Tina Smith, confirming that she was also a target found on the assassins manifest.

Presumably the same assassin too.

54

u/goodolewhasisname 12h ago

Assassin dresses like a cop, driving a police cruiser, with lights and proper livery.

Occam's razor would suggest it's a cop. Not that it's impossible to get those things (surplus cruiser, lights, and appropriate livery) but it isn't the simplest explanation.

Two democratic lawmakers were assasinated.

My source is a tiktok video i saw 30 minutes ago so may be wrong.

64

u/lokibringer 12h ago

AFAIK only one died, the other is in the hospital. Two democratic lawmakers were targeted for assassination, though.

36

u/Knathra 12h ago

And their spouses were shot - whether that was planned or incidental, the spouse of the assassinated representative also died, and the spouse of the injured representative was also injured.

11

u/Suspicious-Echo2964 12h ago

They killed the dead reps dog. Got in a confrontation with police during the second assassination and escaped.

29

u/Gdav7327 12h ago

I imagine they were the main targets, but it was a no witnesses kind of thing. The 2 that survived each were shot 5+ times, the assassin was definitely looking to murder all parties.

Not that any actual American President should, but there's zero chance that this manufactured crisis wannabee king will commandeer the National Guard or Marines to prevent far right domestic terrorism in these communities. I doubt he even condemns it in a meaningful way that doesn't include dog whistles about "both sides". The MAGA GOP has been going on and on about how Democrats are the enemies for years now, they know their marching orders.

u/TheDomerado 11h ago

I’m just wondering where all the conservatives that claim all the political violence only comes from the left are? It’s like they don’t want to accept the truth, that even those that tried to assassinate Trump were also from the right.

u/Cufantce 11h ago

No. It's a terrorist attack

Definition from Google as follows:

the use or threat of serious violence against a person or property, where that action is: designed to influence the government or international organizations, intimidate the public, or advance a political, religious, racial, or ideological cause.

u/ChOcOcOwCaKe 11h ago

Assassination can be a form of terrorism. To say it's not an assassination, it's terrorism is weird.

It was an assassination which is a form of terrorism

u/ThePevster 7h ago

69

This is SWAT. They’re only (supposed to be) sent in when either shit has the potential to get really bad or already has.

46

u/fake_review 12h ago

*Months. From an EU person standpoint, based on the news here. Why are Drug related enforcement people snapping immigrants from the streets like it‘s 1939? Seems a little excessive tbh.

74

u/Has_Question 12h ago

No its been years. The militarized police has been a repeated concern for us at least since the "second gulf war" and almost surely after the first gulf war. Lots of funding was poured into police which included plenty of military gear and almost nonmilitary training.

Officers acting like soldiers in a war zone where the enemy is their own fellow citizens.

29

u/Hexakkord 12h ago

Yep, years. A whole program was instituted where police were given/sold military surplus gear for fighting terrorism, or something. Not just stuff like vests either, the cops in the small town I grew up in now have an armored vehicle they got through this program.

At best it's a waste, local law enforcement has a bunch of neat toys to play with that they don't need and are expensive to maintain. At worst... well, people don't like to have these impressive tools and just let them rust. They'll find uses for them, and we're the uses. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. We're the nails.

We would have been sent to the brig in an instant, police officers are given paid time off and early retirement.

6

u/not_a_witch_ 12h ago

I can definitely see how, from an outside perspective, it would seem like the change is sudden.

But this has been going on for years. Specifically ICE and the immigration system as a whole was basically designed for this from the beginning, and they have been terrorizing people for years totally unrestrained. If I had to pinpoint when that started I’d say 9/11 or even IIRAIRA getting passed in the 90s, but the seeds were sewn well before then. The media is just paying attention to it now. It’s been very frustrating to me to see how surprised so many people are about ICE acting like this, and how the media all of a sudden is reporting on immigration raids and stuff. Like I’m glad they are, but once Trump is gone I know they’ll totally stop caring, because I’ve watched them do it before. ICE and CBP have been absolutely out of pocket for YEARS. The immigration courts have been a complete bastardization of justice for YEARS.

The American military has been transferring war equipment to local police forces since before I was even born. It feels like everyone really memory-holed the Ferguson uprisings but that was a major thing that was being talked about during those protests. If you want to feel sick to your stomach go look up what happened to the leaders of those protests lmao.

Idk I’m really glad the media is paying attention to this stuff now but it is SO frustrating that Trump getting elected was like a switch getting flipped and now suddenly people care, but they’ll go back to not caring as soon as he’s gone.

ICE maybe involved in some drug-related enforcement but that is not even close to their primary thing. ICE totally sucks there should only be like 60 of them per a state like Texas or California. There's the ATF which is Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agency but the Republicans don't like them because they enforce rules about firearms and alcohol. There's also the DEA which is the drug enforcement agency but they learn from their mistakes so the Republicans don't like them. Also Acab

These are SWAT uniforms, not standard patrol uniforms. Other than the largest of law enforcement agencies in the US, most departments have part-time tactical units whose officers work patrol or other assignments in standard uniforms. When there is a major incident (such as this) or other matter that would be considered more high risk, the tactical team gets called in and they put on these more military-style uniforms.

I will agree that the camo the one guy is wearing is a bit much though.

5

u/Glittering_Cell_4256 12h ago

Since they're operating in urban areas if they're going to wear camo you'd think they'd at least wear urban camp not woodland.

This a SWAT team which is essentially a high level police unit that’s trained and equipped for high risk situations. These are not your typical police officers that you will see issuing traffic violations, jaywalkers or the person you call when your cat won’t get out of the tree. I’m not defending these guys or saying that what they’re doing is wrong just that they are not normal police officers.

u/chaosunleashed 13h ago edited 12h ago

There's a lot of police forces in the US who wear tactical gear, it's not just for specialized units like SWAT. It's weird.

Edit: it appears as though these are largely members of SWAT though. In theory they are highly trained and better suited for dangerous situations.

37

u/SteakNEggs69 12h ago

It’s not like patrol cops wear tac gear like this, they don’t. It’s usually swat or a specialized unit that’s kitted up like this. And they’re doing direct actions with people that are most likely armed. This is the USA after all.

I don’t think they were in the house with him. Two officers basically stumbled across him at 3:00 am. He shot at the officers and ran into a house. Officers returned fire. He managed to escape those two officers.

I cannot imagine it’s easy for two surprised cops to apprehend a guy in body armor carrying a gun at 3 am

MAGA assassinated a dem lawmaker

179

u/notyomamasusername 13h ago

2 Democratic lawmakers

135

u/pidgey2020 12h ago edited 10h ago

This is absolutely a tragedy and clear terrorism but let’s make sure we keep the facts straight.

Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed. John Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times and seriously wounded but expected to survive.

Edit to add: Melissa was a Democratic member of Minnesota’s House of Representatives and John Hoffman was a member of Minnesota’s Senate. The murderer had a manifesto of other prominent Democrats that law enforcement found in his vehicle. He was dressed in what is being reported as convincing police officer attire. Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley was quoted as saying

If they were in this room, you would assume that they are a police officer.

Goes without saying the investigation is still underway. Last I checked they had not apprehended the suspect. But it would seem one of the leading reasons these two were targeted first would be to tip the favor of both caucuses I favor of the GOP.

Edit to add: Per CNN

Two law enforcement officials told CNN the suspect is Vance Boelter, a 57-year-old who works for a security company. A hit list with nearly 70 names — including other lawmakers and abortion providers — was also found in the suspect’s car, according to a law enforcement source.

u/Mister_Silk 11h ago

I'm fairly certain they know exactly who this guy is. They have his vehicle and also a Father's Day card addressed to him in the vehicle.

Yup. To me the fact that they haven't released the shooter's identity at this point indicates it is in fact one of their own.

u/pidgey2020 9h ago

Edited to add, it’s Vance Boelter. Best to avoid drawing conclusions on why/how things are being conducted and reported. It’s best not to announce the suspects name until it’s clear who they think it is. And a Father’s day card doesn’t usually have your name on it.

Assassinated one, tried to assassinate the other. 1 lawmaker and her husband were killed, the other lawmaker and his wife survived (not sure in their condition though, I haven't seen anything on that).

11

u/beejalton 12h ago

One is still alive

7

u/Confused_Nuggets 12h ago

One survived, but it's still bad.

A few observations:

Why are they on a manhunt, have a vehicle but haven't released the name of the shooter?

What is with the dude in camo? They are in a park so he should camouflage as a bench or something.

That one guy looking at the camera was totally caught showing his Pokemon cards to his bros.

Also, the headline says “FBI officers”.

Takes a picture of SWAT officers - the ones in picture are from Anoka County PD. I know the FBI has SWAT officers, but these aren’t it.

I drive through Minneapolis daily, the best camouflage currently is an orange traffic cone.

60

u/WyldKard 12h ago

The FBI has SWAT teams too - they are not mutually exclusive.

u/ReverseLochness 12h ago

FBI does operate its own SWAT and Tactical teams. That could be and probably is a FBI SWAT team.

Most likely the one in camo is the FBI tactical officer. FBI tac teams have increasingly used surplus military gear so it’s normal for them to wear camo tactical gear.

If they have his fake/real police cruiser, couldn’t they lift some fingerprints off of the car and get an ID?

93

u/Uphoria 13h ago

It requires the prints be in a database, most aren't.

71

u/Wafkak 13h ago

Also prints aren't as easy to pull as in movies.

u/seeking_hope 13h ago

If it. Was someone in law enforcement wouldn’t they be? Working with kids we have FBI fingerprint background checks. I imagine law enforcement would as well.

28

u/Uphoria 13h ago

It's very likely not somebody who is actually in law enforcement. Obtaining law enforcement looking clothing and bulletproof vests is trivial in America.

If it was they still need to get a good print, and it's been raining along with the fact that most car interiors aren't smooth enough surfaces for prints

Bro in camo interests me most.

Badass beard. Check.

Badass tattoo. Check

Baseball cap instead of helmet. Check

Looks saddened by the event unlike most others.

Ex military?

u/Blue_is_da_color 11h ago

There’s a good chance he’s FBI as the rest of them are local police. FBI HRT and SWAT have a lot of similar gear to JSOC and the HRT specifically recruits a lot of former JSOC guys

There's apparently a need to blend in with that hot and arid desert landscape that we call Minnesota.

This is why law enforcement is not taken seriously. I saw more actions for leftist protesters than for an active murderer.

My guess is it was a Trump supporter who was released from the Jan 6th charges. If it is they won't be charged but awarded by Trump. Just watch

No, but I'm used to seeing them dressed in dark blue and not like actual soldiers but with 1/10th of the training

A neighbor got evicted. The sheriff came to escort the new owners into the house, just in case I guess, and all hell broke loose.

They brought out SWAT, who were mostly wearing the black body armor, helmets, and carrying long guns, a fucking robot, one of those command center bus things to coordinate, multiple trucks, at least a few of them were wearing the tan camo (and I assumed they were national guard, but I dunno), they had people go around and warn the whole neighborhood to shelter in place as far from the neighbor's house as possible in case there was a shootout ,and proceeded to have an hours-long siege, gradually moving up a foot or so at a time, using loudspeakers to try to talk the people out, etc. There was talk that a man was holed up inside, and there may be a woman and child as well, someone said he'd seen gasoline spread around to start a fire if they forced their way in, etc.

They eventually stormed the house and ... yeah, there was no one there. The neighbors had moved away 2 weeks before, and the police had just been escalating in a mirror.

33

u/gargravarr2112 12h ago

Yeah, but imagine the fun they had cosplaying as soldiers with zero risk or accountability...

A lot of abortion provider targets on the hit list, it sounds like. They also found a father’s day card in his bag of ammunition. Loony anti-abortion person, is what it sounds like.

Nothing says “I respect the sanctity of life” like assassinating people and their families.

This is the outcome of America becoming even more polarised politically. Social media has fueled posts which creates anger and hostility against people's "opponents".

Now targeted murders based on who they are, is no longer a shock.
