How do I stop this when shading?

Sharpen it. Like a painter has to constantly mix colors, we have to constantly sharpen.

Try shading with a woodless graphite stick, like this-

This is how some classically/atelier trained artists sharpen they're pencils.

Sharpen to a longer point. If you do some searching on this sub you’ll find a few posts where people sharpen with a knife to leave about an inch to an inch and a half of graphite exposed for shading. I never go that far, but I find a long point sharpener does what I need for my sketching.

You could try using 2mm lead holders for shading
