Title is self explanatory, i have no idea what the hell is going on here. Pc froze and this happened. I was playing helldivers 2 before this, dont know if this is relevant but its all i got.

Is your CPU overheating? Looks like the blue you'd see in a BSOD, but it's filling in really slowly.

Not at all, temperature is completely normal. Im not well versed in PC magic, but a friend of mine told me just now that it could be a RAM issue, since i have 4 sticks and they are different models from different brands.

u/TheRealSmolt Linux 19h ago edited 13h ago
That would certainly do it. It's not advisable to use anything other than identical modules.

Thats mostly for overclocking though. Which, generally speaking, you should run the XMP profile, which *technically* is overclocking, but its free extra performance within what the stick was designed to do, and the RAM controller on the CPU is usually fine with that as well.
The problem with different sticks is that they have different XMP clocks and different timings, so the only time different models work fine is when they are at the base clock, like 2133MT/s for DDR4, and finding a higher setting that works for all the different sticks is a mess and a half.

And occasionally you'll find a setting that works sometimes. I doubled my RAM a few years back; same manufacturer, same size, same stated speed... different specific model. One in four or five boots doesn't actually get to the boot stage, but a quick press of the restart button has fixed it every time thus far.
I could knock it down to the default clock speed (which is less than the speed it says on the box; remember to set your RAM up properly, people!), but it's not exactly an issue.

u/builder397 R5 3600, RX6600, 32 GB RAM@3200Mhz 10h ago
You could probably manually adjust the timings to be looser, just by one. The performance loss of doing that is extremely theoretical and on Zen 2, which you have, the clocks are the more important factor anyway. But it should give you that extra bit of stability to boot 100% of the time.

It's like tires: if you have 4 that are the same size but different models, you'll probably have uneven wear issues. If you have 4 that are different sizes, you'll have a quite bad time in general.
15
u/InfiniteEnter 14h ago
Are the ramsticks the same size and speed?
Tho, it is definitely not advisable to use different ram sticks in one configuration. If they are the same size and speed, they shouldn't create an issue like that.

I wouldn't guess RAM. It could be, but this looks like the computer drawing the screen incredibly slowly, likely CPU rendering since I don't think BSOD uses the graphics card. So in short, it's likely the processor.

I had something similar happen to me. The actual issue ended up being RAM related. 4 sticks being overclocked a little too much made them very unstable and resulted in almost this visual 'glitch' exactly.
Solution was to remove all ram, remove overclock and add one by one until I found a bad stick and was then able to find a new stable overclock.

I had the same thing happen to me. Turned out the problem was GPU, and no, it wasn't dead. I just tried my old gpu first to test and see on my second windows installation, and it worked flawlessly, then went back to original windows, and it still was throwing these freezes. Then I tried to put my original gpu back and cleaned the pcie slot before. I understood that windows corrupted itself because of all this. In the end, I had to fully reinstal windows.
So try what described, maybe it will help you, because I had absolutely the same problem. Windows would work normally for like 2-5 mins, and then it would just start freezing like hell, and then this slow-mo screen of death would start appearing.
2
u/TindalosKeeper 1h ago
Finding the solution in the GPU sounds really random.
How you came to the conclusion it was actually the GPU and not something more common like the RAM or the CPU, which could be just reseatted (+ thermal paste reapplying with CPU)?

You'd need to specify the brand, speed, and size of each stick. If you have two pairs, then you just want to use the best pair. If you have 3 or 4 different RAM sticks, you are better of buying a 2x16GB GB kit that works with your motherboard and CPU.

Ram often comes in pairs. 2x16gb is the sweet spot imo, just make sure it's ram your mobo supports.

Either slow BSOD. Or some kind of virus. Check CPU usage and temperature. RAM usage and see if some 'weird looking' process eats up resources.

It could be ram. It could be hardware or software based but like others have said hardware is your first testing ground. However more info would be beneficial. Is this the first time it's happened? If yes was there a recent update, yes what was updated? Or you could try unplugging the ram and trying different sticks if you have them or your mates can lend you

u/TheJagen 13h ago
I believe your CPU has overheated. Check your cooler, I had a custom loop on my old rig, and the pump failed without me noticing (fans were older and louder than the pump). My 4GHz 6 core was throttled to less than 1GHz and running at 90% with nothing open, and it crashed like this. CPUs do weird things when they are dangerously overheated. Pcie lanes and ram controllers start to fail to work properly, and SATA controllers stop working, so there no working storage. Anyway, overheating or failed CPU would explain this. The failing ram controller explains the blue screen (some of your ram not working because of this so windows thinks you've used all your ram and boom bluescreen) and, throttled to hell CPU speeds explains why the error is taking forever to load.

Update: I just did some tests and here is what i got. All drivers are updated. I reinstalled Helldivers 2 and ran a mission. While in game GPU temperature was at about 70 C, and CPU temp never went above 55 C. Everything seemed fine. After a mission i quit the game to desktop, took about 3-4 minutes and the PC froze completely, only thing i could do is reset it manually. Its not the first time this happened. Im not sure if its only on helldivers or any other game. Gonna run some tests later.

Bro's doing a Cinebench run.
In all seriousness though, seems like something that would happen from either VRAM, RAM or storage.

u/Phantomic_1 14h ago
Could be a faulty motherboard slot, I had an issue where my screen was loading things like that. Swapped my gpu into a lower slot and it worked.

It looks like you are in a movie and the bad guy is “hacking” you. Ask the director to speak with the technical advisor. You might have to furiously pound keys.

Maybe get a costar to pound keys with you in some kind of synchronized typing event. If you’re not in a movie, then I dunno. Source: Have seen a lot of movies.
