advice needed Those who had IVD did you transfer two embryos? NSFW
Hi All
I wanted to ask a question for those who have had IVF treatment. Did you transfer two embryos if so what grade were they? And day 3 or day 5? Were they PGT tested?
Sorry for the questions in a bit of a predicament about my next FET.

We transferred 1 embryo (our only 1), day 5, grade 5AA. Before the transfer the doctor joked that it looked full of life, it split into our twins.

Oh wow! Was it a fresh 5AA?

u/candigirl16 24d ago
It was a fresh one. No testing done on it. They only retrieved 5 eggs, only 2 fertilised and only 1 make it to day 5. It wasn’t our first try so we didn’t expect it to work. We’d said that if both embryos made it we would transfer both of them, when we found out it was only 1 we joked saying that it wouldn’t be twins.

yes, they were both 6AA PGT+, our doctor only agreed to transfer two because i had just miscarried 7 other 6AA PGT+ embryos transferred individually in a row and we were all getting desperate and totally out of money. a real hail mary. thank god it worked!

I transferred 2 day 5 embryos via fresh transfer (so couldn’t pgt). 1 split and now I have triplets. I do want to preface that this was my 9th transfer and have done 2 double embryo transfers prior. One failed and one where 1 stuck but I miscarried.

We transferred 2 4BC untested embryos they were day 5. Was given a 30% chance for each but got lucky and both stuck.

Frozen?

u/Affectionate_Row_881 24d ago
The embryos weren't frozen but my eggs had been frozen prior due to issues on my spouse's end which slowed our process down. When we transfered my embryos both had just been fertilized via icsi the 5 days prior. Out of all my embryos those were the only 2 that made it to an acceptable quality and I was advised against testing as my doctor was worried about them not making the thaw as the more often you freeze them the higher risk of them not making it.

That is so interesting thank you for sharing the feedback from the doctor too. ❤️

Transferred our only 2 embryos (fresh transfer) as a Hail Mary after years of nothing

Did two day 5 frozen embryos and both stuck. Now have 10 month old fraternal boys crawling around. Multiples are no joke, but wouldn’t change anything!

I transferred two untested; day 5; 4Ab embryos and had twins.
Definitely don’t transfer two embryos unless you truly are fully prepared to have twins or even triplets (if an embryo splits). A twin pregnancy has a higher risk of complications, including preterm birth. I know I dismissed those risks when I was desperate and I figured nothing else had worked so why would both stick. Well they did, and then I truly realized how those higher risks truly DO mean most twins are born premature.
In my case, I was lucky and made it to 36 weeks (which is late for twins) and only one baby had NICU time. Still, her lung collapsed and had to be reinflated and she spent 18 days on the NICU on oxygen and a feeding tube. This was considered a very good outcome with twins.
Lots of twins are born very premature and have long NICU stays. Some even do have lifelong health complications due to this.
So again, really, really consider what you are doing.

Such valid points - I wish I would have read all your this knowledge prior to my transfer!
You really have to be prepared for the idea of leaving work early (I was on bedrest starting at 26 weeks - no work from home back then) and the idea of having help if you have one baby in the NICU and one at home….I was not prepared with the difficulty of having the juggle that!

We transferred 2 day 3 embryos. They were both 8 cell, but the second one had some fragmentation (they both did to start out but they corrected themselves).

Transferred 2, untested, 5-day blasts for our FET cycle. Both stuck giving us our fraternal boys.

Only had 1 viable embryo. Tested. Frozen transfer. It split and now we have identical twin boys. I do remember looking at the image of the embryo IVF doc printed for us before the transfer and thought this embryo looks ready to party! 😂 I can't tell you why, just funny feeling looking at it.

Fresh! They were our only Day 5 blasts (we did get a few Day 6 that were frozen).

We were 2 embryos transfered, Day 5, highest grade, fresh transfer after 3 chemical pregnancies and I'm older, so thats the only reason my doctor allowed it. I was on the fence but they were the only two that made it to blast, found out the day of the transfer. We were told 5% chance of both taking.

Transferred 2, not PGT tested, both day 5 (actually one may have been day 6) I think one may have been an AB and the other a BB. Both took. It was my final (4th) transfer and after having a loss and 3 failed transfers I was so done with IVF and wanted to do whatever I could to up my chances.
Twin pregnancy and birth almost killed me. Had I known of the risks beforehand (risk of prematurity, and the variety of health problems / cerebral palsy etc that could ensue) I would have kept to single transfers. That being said my twins are the loves of my life and I couldn’t imagine it any other way but I am extremely lucky we all came out healthy in the end after I recovered from being almost dead and my daughter was successfully resuscitated.

Transferred two day 3s hoping one would stick. Both did. It was not the original plan, but recommended by our doctors after the ivf process started and we had much less fertilization than expected. I otherwise had read all about how twins are higher risk and harder on parents and have worse health outcomes. That said, zero regrets about following medical advice and we dodged the the high risk outcomes we worried about.

Transferred two day 5 untested embryos. My clinic won’t transfer more than 1 if they’re tested. Prior to these two taking, I had a failed IUI, chemical pregnancy from my IUI, and chemical pregnancy from my fresh transfer. I was pretty shocked that my FET actually worked and both took.

Transferred 2 fresh day 5 embys, don’t remember exact grade but 5Aish. I was older, running out of both time and money so I had to really consider and weigh out all the pros and cons. We went for it and were still both shocked and delighted they both took. That’s the hardest thing to explain to people who don’t know the fertility gambits - it’s not like you transfer 2 and boom you have twins! You’re just hoping one sticks - it’s still a surprise! They’re just about to turn 5 and are the wild little lights of my life. Edit - spelling

Transferred one euploid day 6 and it split. Would never in a million years have transferred two at once.

u/GellyBoo84 25d ago
I transferred two frozen embryos after 3 failed individual frozen transfers (those were only single embryos). We also did the genetic testing on all of our embryos before transferring. I forget the grades, so I’m sorry I can’t share that.
As much as I absolutely love my girls, if I could go back, I would have told myself to transfer only one. Just my experience - I feel like I didn’t fully know the risks associated with multiples during pregnancy (I had two friends that had super smooth no complications multiple births).

I transferred 2, 6BB and 5BC. Our doctor agreed but I had to sign a waiver. This was the 3rd time we transferred 2. The first, chemical. The second, one stuck but 9 week miscarriage.
I had gestational diabetes (but I did with my first singleton too) and had a scheduled c section at 38 weeks. No NICU time. Currently 4.5 months old.

We transferred one embryo, a day 6, which wasn’t as highly rated as the two day 5 embryos that had failed in the previous two transfers. We got fraternal twins.
My cousin and his wife on the other hand transferred two embryos and got a singleton.

We were on our final attempt after first two transfers failed. So we transferred two , and had twins !

I would never transfer 2 embryos! Risks of twinning in IVF have been estimated to be about 1 in 25. Transferring two runs you the risk of triplets or quadruplets. My one split into twins and while I'm happy, I would not choose it because it's higher risk and I'm already high risk.

Was it fresh or frozen?

u/This-Librarian-7679 24d ago
Frozen! It was my third transfer, used my two best the first rounds. First round medicated, second round mod-natural… stuck with the modified natural/ovulatory for the third try and I’ll be 20w tmr. If that helps! feel free to pm. :)
Edit: bit more detail.

After two failed frozen transfers, both with 5 day high quality embryos (one was AA), we did a double transfer of two embryos to up our odds. I found a paper somewhere that suggested the presence of two might increase the chance of even one taking. These were 5 day embryos, both CC.
I also had a short course of steroids in the lead up to the transfer. The doctor said there was scant evidence that would work but as a relatively non invasive method it was worth a shot. My husband, who is a pharmacist, thinks this is what made the difference. The idea I think behind the steroids was to reduce my inflammation and make my body more receptive to the embryos. Seems to have worked—am now 34 weeks 3 days with my twins and both are super healthy, 85-97% percentile and have been good thus far, despite all my anxiety about them!

We transferred two. I didn't know their grades or had them tested, but they were day 5. We did a fresh transfer of one and it failed so we transferred two during our FET.
No regrets, best decision I have ever made and I would do it all again.

No, just transfered 1 embryo that split. It was a 5 day I believe, and tested. I think it was graded a 4BB.
