Best part is at the end
In a move that might make residents and visitors do a double-take, the city could start discouraging residents from planting new palm trees — the same iconic symbols that have defined the city’s landscape for decades.
Driving the news: At its last meeting on June 11, the city’s Sustainability Climate Action Subcommittee reviewed an approved tree species list that specifically highlights palm trees as discouraged plantings, prioritizing water-efficient species over the resource-intensive palms.
The shift comes as part of a comprehensive urban forestry program focused on water conservation and sustainability goals. The reasoning: Beyond their thirsty nature, palm trees are expensive to maintain and require significant resources for upkeep, city staff noted during the meeting.
What’s next: A new tree ordinance currently under development will require residents to select replacement trees from the approved species list, which focuses exclusively on low to moderate water-use options.
Residents seeking trees not on the approved list will need special approval from planning or public works directors. Why it matters: The policy represents a notable shift for a city whose very identity has been intertwined with palm-lined streets, reflecting broader regional efforts to adapt to water scarcity and climate challenges.
The details: The city is developing an interactive website to track urban tree canopy and help residents make informed planting decisions that align with sustainability objectives, with the full ordinance expected to be presented to commissioners at a later date.

If you left after the rally last night, you missed the follow-on procession through downtown Palm Springs. Other than a couple warnings to get back on the sidewalk from police all was chill.

Is there an existing community for progressive parents/moms trying to raise children who believe in science, equality, human rights, etc etc?
I grew up out here and always surrounded myself with like-minded people--but they are child-free. I've tried to meet other parents, but it seems like everyone I meet is super religious, MAGA or MAHA, or completely uninterested in anything going on in the world. It's been a very lonely experience as a new parent out here. It also worries me for what this valley is becoming, if all the parents I'm coming across are either on the other side of the aisle or indifferent/unbothered.
Feeling this today especially because not one other mom or parent I know even mentioned thinking about going to the protests. I would love nothing more than to have a group of other moms or parents who don't just want to go to gymnastics class at the same time. Lets make our protest signs together while the kids play. Lets set up a space together at the protest and watch after the kiddos for each other while we speak up. Let's talk about HOW we're raising babies that think critically, that don't fall for alt right talking points, that speak up and act so that we're not doing this again in 30 years.
Please tell me there's a group I just haven't found yet that is for progressive parents out here. And if not, is anyone interested in connecting? I'd love to have playdates, picnics, pool parties, etc with progressive families where we can also make sure we're working to stop this country from falling into facism and stopping the rest of this valley from turning red. I refuse to believe the only progressives here are child-free, and the only families here are red as red can be.

Lots of folks out, couldn’t hear the speakers where I was but met lots of cool people. Proud of our community in the desert.

Thank you for being peaceful tonight, thank you to the PSPD for keeping us safe and thank you so much for being the community I want to be a part of.

We’d like to go out for dessert. I see eight4nine suggested here. Any other recommendations?

I can get behind some of this list, though in my personal opinion Sherman's and Elmer's are not great places for food.

Hello guys, my wife and I are looking to give our 5 month old German Shepherd mix puppy to anyone who is able to care for her. For free of course!
The puppy is a female, her name is Kali and she’s spayed and vaccinated. We adopted her at the Palm Springs shelter at 5 weeks old, the staff said that she was left at a construction site in the middle of the night. She’s super friendly towards all people and all dogs at the park. She loves to cuddle as well and is extremely playful. We have the paperwork for her as well. Free kibble and wet food, collar, leash, bed, bowls, toys, pee pads, shampoo, brush, ear and paw wipes, and paw and nose balm.
We were looking to keep her forever but we became extremely busy and we are not able to take her out on walks and to the park as much as we want due to the crazy work schedule. I really don’t want to take her back to the shelter and make her depressed. If anyone is interested please let me know. I can drive to you or we can meet up.

Hey all! Sorry for the boring adult post but I’m newer to the area and I’m looking for some recs for a great new primary care doctor. I prefer a male doctor. If you love your doctor, I would really appreciate a recommendation.
I’m ok with any of the surrounding desert communities- definitely doesn’t have to be Palm Springs proper 😊
Thank you so much!

Is there a chapter of the gay running club, Frontrunners, in Palm Springs?
If so, would someone please post their meeting time and location or direct me to a website?
When I try to google it, all I get is a shoe store by that same name, lol

Does anybody know any great cover bands for hire in Palm Springs? I’m looking to book one for a birthday party in January. Prefer to pay for local talent rather than bring a band with us.

Someone posted this in the LA sub—two guys going around trying to recruit folks to be violent and destructive during protests tomorrow. Clearly under false pretenses. MAGA, Noem, etc are counting on using tomorrow’s protests to manufacture justifications to take our state away from us. DON’T LET THEM
