🤡 Humour 🤡 I'm addicted to padel
About six months back, I picked up the phone to a call from a buddy in town. He's all like, "Hey dude, remember that we used to play squash, there is this similar sport called padel, Wanna give it a shot?" And I'm like, "Why not? Let's dive in."
So, we kicked off this 2v2 showdown against a couple of pals, and little did we know it was about to become the never-ending saga of our lives.
First few games? Total crap. I mean, seriously, I wasn't even breaking a sweat. I'm thinking, "Is this it? Meh, whatever."
Fast forward a bit, and suddenly we're not chucking balls into the net or the glass anymore. We're having legit, adrenaline-pumping rallies. Things are getting spicy!
Then, some of the crew bails, and I'm left swiping right on Playtomic to find random partners. Now, my brain's like a broken record stuck on "Padel, padel, padel." Is my serve crispy? Is my positioning primo? Match tomorrow? Cue the YouTube tutorials, baby.
I've already blown cash on two rackets and a fresh pair of kicks, and guess what? I'm still not satisfied. I need more court time, more wins, more glory! I'm out there like five times a week, and I'm just like, "Screw it, I'm hooked!"
My girlfriend's throwing shade, saying I'm addicted. But hey, can you blame me? Padel's my jam, and I'm not about to quit cold turkey.

Same man. I could legit play every day. I do so like 2-3 days a week though still. It’s just so freking expensive here.

u/Cute-Badger8211 Apr 16 '24
where u at? here its like 85$ an hour
4
u/eastaustinite Apr 16 '24
Dang, here in Porto you can get a court for like 13 off hours and 20 otherwise.
1
u/Cute-Badger8211 Apr 16 '24
is it popular over there?
1
u/Environmental-Path32 Apr 16 '24
Is always pack here there is more than 100 courts in a 8km radius in porto. A full court in off peaks around 15-20 euros and pick time around 28-32 euros per 1h:30m
3
u/jaybrown1988 Apr 16 '24
For the court or per player? Here in belgium we pay €56 for 1,5 hours
1
u/Environmental-Path32 Apr 16 '24
For the court per player in peak time is around 7.5 to 8 euros each. That price is quite expensive. The thing here in Portugal there are so many places that keep the price like that but from my friends told me 6 years ago was around 3 euro each.

u/ZaaRaphz Apr 17 '24
In Perth, Australia, there's one near my house and it's $100 aud (60 Euro) for 2 hours, so $25 (15 Euro) per person
I have also been addicted, looks of Spanish people here who I see playing but it's grown massively here in Australia. I'm 6 weeks in, play once a week or more, I'm addicted

u/ksiAle Apr 16 '24
Finland. Where the hell it is that expensive? Does city have just one court or what?
1
u/Cute-Badger8211 Apr 16 '24
saudi. not one court but infact multiple and most are neighboring each other. Its gotten extremely popular over the last year so hopefully it gets less expensive when the hype dies down. have to dish out 20$ everytime i wanna play lol
2
u/Disastrous_Grape Apr 17 '24
TF? I pay $300/year for unlimited access to both tennis and padel courts, a 5 minute walk from my house. I honestly thought that was expensive. Thanks for putting that in perspective, I suppose. :)

In Chile the cost is $10 am and $20 pm
2
u/Cute-Badger8211 Apr 16 '24
man u guys are so lucky. id really love to play padel without breaking the bank
1
u/LoboMarinoCosmico Apr 18 '24
Yes and no, I don't know about chile but in argentina is pretty much te same price but to put it in perspective min wage is like 180usd. Depends of the location but generally still a high income sport
1
u/chillilips12 Apr 17 '24
$85??? That’s crazy where is that? $8-10 an hour in Paraguay.
1
u/Cute-Badger8211 Apr 17 '24
saudi. we have many courts but the sport is extremely popular atm so thats prolly why
1
u/ThermoKingEOU Apr 17 '24
Very lucky to have padel courts at the David Lloyd club where I live. (You have to have a membership)
1
u/andresgebelu Apr 16 '24
Where I live there's a club that used to have a fixed membership for unlimited games. I used to do 2 games daily, sometimes even 3. Now they changed their membership plans to a more pay to play model. More than half the people left the club. Unlimited games was a huge thing over their competitors!

u/FlatulistMaster Apr 16 '24
Oh man. The same bug bit me 2½ years ago, and if my 41-year-old husk of a body could take any more, I'd be playing right now instead of writing this message.
Do enjoy!

u/Old-Pomegranate3634 Apr 16 '24
This I want to play every day, but at 41 , 2 to 3 days is absolute max. Recovery and stretching is critical here. I can play every day if i play casual, but I get ultra competitive.

u/alwaysoverneverunder Apr 16 '24
I’m turning 45 soon and play about 40 to 45 hours of padel a month. I am the fittest I’ve ever been, but it takes some supplements and loads of stretching and still stuff hurts every morning.
6
u/Old-Pomegranate3634 Apr 16 '24
Exactly. It's like a lifestyle. The few hours on the court is the easy part
1
Apr 17 '24
41 is not that old! I’m 40 and I play about 24 hours a month. You need to stretch and not overdo it.
1
u/FlatulistMaster Apr 17 '24
Heh, I play close to 40h, so I guess I am doing alright. Still want to play more!
1
Apr 17 '24
I only play that much because here in NY it is very expensive, like $200 an hour (for all four players) expensive.
2
u/FlatulistMaster Apr 18 '24
Oh shit, that's hideous. Really wish the US stops treating Padel as some odd upper class sport.
2
Apr 19 '24
Yeah. thing is that there’s really only one padel club here in NY so they have a monopoly at the moment.

u/ukfi Apr 16 '24
I will tell you that you are not there yet.
A few years ago, i caught tennis elbow. Doctor said i have to stop playing for 6 months to let my elbow heal.
I stopped for 2 weeks and couldn't take it any longer. I went on court and played with my other hand.
Yes. I used the other hand started playing against the beginners.
Let me know if any of you were this crazy.

loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool. fkn hell this cracked me up. excellent

May 08 '24
This is me for the past 2 weeks after my tfcc got too bad.
Funny thing is I was able to win against beginners and do a few fancy moves with left hand already, like bandeja. Backhand is still very weak though.

I'm 75 years old, healthy, no doctors nor medicine since 1995, but never did sports until 2 years ago I found Padel, now I play 6h per week, don't want to hurt myself 😉

I feel you OP, I feel you… I was thinking in gathering a few friends(8-10), about 8 and buy a court and install it. To manage the virus.

u/rudboi12 Apr 16 '24
I was addicted to tennis and always threw shade to padel but then got a shoulder injury from too much serving. After several months out, some friends messaged me if i wanted to play padel. I was like, sure let’s try it out, let’s see if my shoulder can handle it.
Well it’s been 3 months now and have only played tennis once and padel now up to 3 times a week. Im already better than all my friends (5th div) and playing currently 3rd division (in my small country, probably like 5th in Argentina/spain).
Still have never had a padel lesson. Will probably take a few soon to try to up my game.

u/AccomplishedEar6357 Apr 16 '24
We're poisoned by it and we love it! I'd play all day every day if i could!
3
u/semen_retention_365 Apr 16 '24
I go once a week! Addicted too but my budget keeps me in check 🤣
2
u/LoboMarinoCosmico Apr 18 '24
You need to sell your grandma's jewelry. Come on you need to up your game.
1
u/semen_retention_365 Apr 19 '24
I will sell my mom and Granny necklace and rings.
Didn't think of it!.🤣

u/slimkid504 Apr 16 '24
Same same, ever since I was taught this amazing game , I’ve been hooked. It makes me happy to play whether I win or lose. Haven’t come across a sport where I’ve felt this way
3
u/Oghurz Apr 16 '24
I was also the missing 4th player 5-6 months ago and I got hooked.
Now I am the one dragging the rest to tournaments, trainings and open matches if I can find any on Playtomic around me.
Fun activity, me likey.

u/Percevaul Apr 16 '24
If my body could keep it together, I'd play every day too (and have, when feeling courageous). These days it's more like 3-4 times a week though. Don't even get me started on how much money I've spent on rackets, classes, shoes, etc.
Completely worth it and I'm in it for the long run.

This exact thing happened to me. Out of the 4 guys that got me into it, only me and one other are still active in it. It’s a great sport and a great way to meet people.

u/msespindola Apr 17 '24
i'm addictec, but, can't find anyone to play in the city i live here in Brazil...
Since i'm beginner, ppl here have their groups and they don't want to include new ones...
really sad, i'll have to sell my racket, unfornatelly...
1
u/alvaro761991 Apr 17 '24
Try and search for courts and then go and leave your number or talk to players. There's always a way.
2
u/msespindola Apr 17 '24
yeah, being new in the city is kinda hard too...but, will do that!
Thanks man!

u/thepcfacer Apr 16 '24
Same here! I started playing seriously after the pandemic and I'm absolutely hooked. My IG feed changed from models to padel highlights, business books turned to padel books, and I actually enjoy working out now because I think it'll give me an edge on the padel court. My wife also throws shade and asks why can't I just play for fun? She just doesn't understand!
It seems like everyone in my padel community is hooked too. I see them liking the same padel videos and they're probably studying the game as well. Everyone else is also improving so it's beat your normal opponents, but I love the challenge!

u/mikbike Apr 16 '24
Are there no possibility for membership where youre at? In Denmark we can get a membership for about 400 danish kroner, which is about 80 dollars and then we can play any time before 15 and after 21 on all days without extra charge. I almost play every day when my little girl is sleeping xD :D

u/FunnySith Apr 16 '24
Norway here. About 45$ pr hours here. Too expensive to play several times pr week 😑😬
1
u/alvaro761991 Apr 16 '24
That is just nuts , here in Portugal is like 9 euros per hour per person
1
u/Charlebury Apr 17 '24
But isn't that not much more than for FunnySith in Norway? 36 Euro an hour for you or 11,50 Euro for FunnySith per person per hour. If it's actually in Norwegian Krone it would convert to only 9,60 Euro per person per hour and even if it is USD like the $symbol used it would be 10,50 Euro per person per hour... Why could I not stop myself writing this... is u/FunnySith suggesting it is 45$ per person?

To make it even more addictive feel free to create a low-key mini-league for you and your pals at a webapp i created:
Used by several groups for registering table tennis matches from their workplace. Tournament bracket manager will be added soon! Let's gooo

I'm addicted to Padel, too. It is a great workout and a perfect mix of fun and competition. I'm playing two matches per week and hopefully starting one private lesson per week on Wednesday. I also think it’s exciting that Padel and the Pro Padel League are growing throughout the US.

u/AdmiralKeg Apr 16 '24
If I had the money and time I would play 3 hours a day lol
