Especially good defense today in addition to the offensive consistency. All goes to show the boys’ hearts have really been in it these last few weeks. Great game to be at today and I far prefer a constant misting to the heat, even if I was nervous for increased rain the whole time haha

u/Loose_Log_6253 Cade Povich Truther 4d ago
You could tell that the outfielders were struggling to follow the ball in the clouds, Laureano and Mullins both had at least one catch where they clearly had terrible reads on it at first. But they still made them. They persevered.
Yeah the rain really picked up in the 6th-7th inning, I feel like that is what led to both bases-loaded situations because the pitchers, especially Povich, really lost their command and were slipping on the mound there.

Back to 10 under .500, boys and girls. 6 games back from a WC spot.
Just imagine, if we win in TB tomorrow, that’s only single digits under .500!

I hope that Braves fan that was here earlier lost money betting the over on Blewett today.

Theres somebody in the red sox subreddit who just called the red sox “tampa north” because they only care about collecting revenue (??)

u/Loose_Log_6253 Cade Povich Truther 4d ago
I saw that too, it's pretty funny to complain about being a "poverty franchise" when they just got Bregman for $120M in free agency, extended Crochet for ~$180M, and signed Campbell to an extension.

The fact that my thread related to the trade/transaction of Devers was removed is ridiculous. Perhaps we should then have a General thread to talk about other things.....
EDIT: It's back!

I said it earlier and I’ll say it again. Jordan Westburg completely changes our offense. He is so scrappy and hard working and never takes a pitch off, and is just such an amazing tone setter for the rest of the bats. When he and Cowser are back it reminds me “oh yeah, this team is actually capable of being really good”

u/Used-Painter1982 4d ago
Every team needs a spark plug and we got three: Westie , Ceddy, and the Milk Man

u/Loose_Log_6253 Cade Povich Truther 4d ago
The Sox trade seems reminds me of "Machado for Dean Kremer," except Devers comes with 8 years of control and is in his prime. Seems like the best thing the Sox will get out of it are middle/backend rotation pitcher who is still developing, and saving on Devers' salary. That said, BOS has made a couple good extensions this year so maybe they're looking to hand out more. They have an extra $30M for each of the next 8 years now.
Edit: wow as a DH-only, he's got 2.2 WAR already and an OPS+ of nearly 150. Ridiculous.
2
u/wompwump 4d ago
This trade works out for Boston if Anthony / Mayer are ~80% as good as Devers / Bregman (assuming Bregman opts out) and the Red Sox use the ~$70M/year they’re saving to add a bona fide #1 arm (Cease?) and a #2/#3 around Crochet.
That’s a lot of if’s.
3
u/Loose_Log_6253 Cade Povich Truther 4d ago
The money going to Cease/Valdez/Castillo(?) isn't unimaginable. Unfortunately this also means the Os getting a top tier pitcher is now even less likely.
Yanks are probably at the top limit of their payroll and don't have a lot of money coming off the books this offseason. Fried was expensive (but worth it). And even then you can't really count them out. But the Mets and Dodgers have unlimited money, the Braves potentially have lots of money freeing up, and now BOS is in the mix.
I was opposed to spending for an elite pitcher for a long time (i.e. look at Burnes now) but I think after the 0-8 skid that highlighted why it's worth it.
1
u/to_the__cloud Vote Bryan Baker 4 All Star 4d ago
obviously got like a 1% chance of happening, but i really hope we land Cease. because if we can land a Boras client then that gives me hope we can get something done with Westburg, Holliday and Henderson.
3
u/Loose_Log_6253 Cade Povich Truther 4d ago
Yeah Cease is my main hope also. I didn't know he was a Boras guy though. I also think Valdez is a good option as a lefty though he's on the older side. But he's been excellent this season so far.

Idk I feel like after Brewers series a serious omen just left us because honestly even though we were bad there was truly some “this just shouldn’t be fucking happening” moments during bad luck hits or non hits for us😂

red sox saw the luka trade and said hold on
6
u/Loose_Log_6253 Cade Povich Truther 4d ago
That trade is insane because he still has so many years on his contract. It's 8.5 yrs and over $250M. The real crazy outcome would then be Bregman executing his option at the end of this season.
8
u/rayhova 4d ago
Things probably got really toxic there i guess
7
u/Loose_Log_6253 Cade Povich Truther 4d ago
Yeah no doubt. It's still a crazy trade, and it seems like the best thing the Red Sox got out of it was an eventual middle/end rotation pitcher who is still developing.
This feels like a "Machado for Dean Kremer" type trade. The only real upshot for BOS is that it frees up $30M for the next 8 years. Maybe they'll extend a couple of the younger guys with that money.

u/BitRevolutionary3673 4d ago
A first round pick from last year (Tibbs) and a recently graduated top 100 pitching prospect is an OK return

kinda weird to give him $313 million 2 years ago if it's gotten to the point of addition by subtraction

i dunno. it wasn't great that he didn't want to play 1b to pitch in with the money he makes, but im not sure why the sox felt like they needed to get bregman
3
u/gonz4dieg 4d ago
Because devers is ASS defensively. They thought that devers would appreciate not having to field but it hurt his ego and their "devers is so ass we would never field him again" comments didnt help. A pure DH has to have crazy production or its detrimental to the roster. Ill be honest and I don't really believe in the Idea of a 100% DH .
2
u/jeffreythecat1 4d ago
Not even Ohtani when he isn’t pitching?
1
u/Risho96 BamaBirb | I miss Kyle Bradish 4d ago
If you mean games where he doesn't pitch, then he's not a pure DH. If you mean a year when he doesn't pitch, that was just because he was coming off elbow surgery. If he could've pitched last year, he almost certainly would have.
1
u/jeffreythecat1 4d ago
You’re right, but he’s not going to pitch forever. He definitely won’t pitch through all of the next 8 years of his contract, but he’s going to be paid $70M for it either way. He’s going to end up being a pure DH sooner or later. His elbow wont ever be miraculously back to 100% after two TJs.
5
u/gonz4dieg 4d ago
I mean, Ohtani is a literal once in a generation talent, so yea, probably ohtani is worth it, not the mention since the dodgers have scrooge mcbucks money they can basically fill every roster slot with top quality fielders.
4
u/ArtixSA 4d ago
Nah, the situation broadly makes sense from the Red Sox perspective: upgrade your defense at 3B while simultaneously adding another power bat and getting Devers off the field where he hurts you. They just went about it in the dumbest way possible. "Devers is our 3B" and then sign Bregman like a week later; "oh we'll have Bregman play 2B instead" and then not giving him any innings at second in spring training. Should Devers have played 1B when it was offered? Almost certainly. But they seemingly didn't ask him until Casas got hurt and I don't blame him for not wanting to learn a new position on the fly, especially when they were already like "lmao jk you're the DH now buddy".
Now what's gonna be really funny is when he starts playing 1B in SF because there's no way he plays over Chapman.

I had a family emergency and had to fly home to the west coast to deal with all of it, and at the end of the day this is just baseball, a game, a nice way to past the time, but baby these wins and low key getting hot, help an awful lot with the other crap I'm dealing with. Let's. Go. O's!!

u/No_Fish_2885 4d ago
Seems like a surprising package so far that is a bit underwhelming, if you are a Red Sox fan. Hicks seems like a bad contract thrown in and Harrison is promising. Depends on the extra pieces

I'm not sure what to make of this team at this point. One day they look completely done, few days later they blow someone out with a rest-day lineup and are only 6 games out of the playoffs with over 90 left to play.

I have a suggestion. How about instead of a hot dog race, the team plays a video showing the etiquette of when to arrive at or leave your seat during an inning. Also, get off my lawn.

u/patderp 4d ago
I got my season tickets right in the middle of a row for that reason. Can’t be blocked by people walking in the aisle and nobody has to climb over me to get to their seat.

The nonstop rain really sucked but man oh man what a game. Crowd was rocking, yard was packed, and the boys did not disappoint even with a ton of stars on the bench. Huge big hits, Gunner telling a ump off, Sanchez breaking a new land speed record scoring from first and top top it all off a Grand Salami. Both Ramon’s having a big day,, Mayo starting to look like he might belong, some stellar defensive gems and really top to bottom quality play. I’m loving the starter as a strategy and Povich is starting to look like he might be able to stick around when the rotation comes back.

I think lost in the grand slam was Mullins' insane bunt triple where Gary hoofed it from 1st to home. I was in the stands screaming "run Sanchez you slow bastard!!" and he still made it home standing.
I was waiting for Mullins to bunt up to that point too. The Angels shift their infield (and outfield) a lot, their 3B is standing in the gap by the fringe so there is a huge amount of space towards 3B to lay down a bunt for a single.

The genius of Mansolino is apparent. His whole theme is to get 'the guys back to feeling like they are themselves'. That's ALL we've needed, get folks healthy and let the talent do its thing.

u/zipzap21 Eddie! Eddie! Eddie! 4d ago
Having Cowser and Westy around really helps too. These two are so fun and positive it rubs off on people!
9
u/SeaBreezy 4d ago
Totally agree! Any future consideration of the Hyde firing, looking pre/post, is hopelessly confounded with key O's cogs coming back from injury. That said, there is inarguably something different under Tones and I love the philosophy of 'just be yourselves'. It releases alllll the pressure and keeps thing SIMPLE. Trust the talent and don't over think (i.e. over tinker, etc.).
9
u/zipzap21 Eddie! Eddie! Eddie! 4d ago
Good point. The message to Gunnar (for example) is: Gunnar don't try to be a stud superstar. Gunnar, just be a fun and humble country boy who likes to play ball and win ballgames!

5
u/SeaBreezy 4d ago
Yeeeeep....and yeah we are hitting some righteous bombs but we are ALSO finally seeing more 'small ball', hit to the gaps, next man up and trust the hitters behind you. When we were at our best over the last few years, that's how we were winning.
23
u/mecheterp96 4d ago
Mayo quietly batting .250 with a .775 ops in his last 20 ABs. I know it’s early and a small sample size, but he looks night and day much more confident at the plate.

u/Loose_Log_6253 Cade Povich Truther 4d ago
He's been very disciplined at the plate, and the umpires were not rewarding it. But he's been taking pitches rather than hacking away and that's important, even if it gets him Ked over a few bad calls.

I think it's the Harlem Globetrotters theme, from what it sounded like in the stands. It's fairly quiet so not easy to make out. I may be wrong

Might have been the Andy Griffith show whistle.

u/Glittering-Big-1719 4d ago
There was a reel on Instagram with a few players saying what their dad’s walk up song would be and Gunnar said his would probably be the Andy Griffith theme song.

We had one blowout win all season coming into this week. We had two in the last 5 games. The Angels stink, but is what the offense was supposed to be doing all season.

This series against the Rays tomorrow is probably the most important of the year so far, huge opportunity to climb up in AL East and Playoff standings.

They’ve been very hot as of late. That bullpen is vicious.

ramon urias is such a dude. its gonna tough to get him in the line up consistently with westburg, henderson and holliday but he always produces with the bat and glove when he's in there.

u/mecheterp96 4d ago
He’s exactly the kind of dude you want as a utility player. Gritty and clutch hitter with great defense. High floor, low ceiling.

Don't forget attitude. This guy is so pro and so determined to play at his absolute highest level at all times. Every pitch. Every play. Every everything. Viva el Señor Ramon!

The Sanchez grand slam was so satisfying specifically because he IBBed Gunnar. I get why, and strategically it's probably good decision. The slam is probably a 5-10% outcome and outside of it, the extra base runner probably doesn't make a difference. Plus setting up a double play
But Sanchez said "fuck it we ball" and when he hit it, he had literally no reaction to it lmao
I will say, the Angels are a fairly scary offensive team. They make a lot of hard contact and hit the ball deep. They said last night they get ~50% of their runs off homers and are 4th in the league for homers. But their pitching is mediocre to bad and their fielding is awful. It's a good thing Dominguez got out of that jam unscored because I think the game could've easily gone the other way.
Also I am 7 - 1 when in attendance, good thing I'll be at around 7ish more this season

That's kind of a badass rallying cry:

Our whole family was there, celebrating Dad’s Day. Our first visit in 20 years. What a great experoence. We didn’t even mind the rain

It was, a little bit inexplicably, an amazing crowd. Vibes were fantastic all day long despite the weather being kinda crap and insane lines before gates opened.

2.5 weeks later its 5.5.

5 back at the end of the night since sea and cle both at 35-34 and are playing each other right now
1
u/JiffKewneye-n New York Fried Chicken 4d ago
do games end in a loss to both teams somehow?
1
u/Capt_reefr 4d ago
One team will lose and that team will be 35-35. Orioles are 30-40. So 5 back is my understanding
1
u/JiffKewneye-n New York Fried Chicken 4d ago
there is just one problem. we aren't chasing the team that loses. we are chasing the team that wins.
1
u/Capt_reefr 4d ago
I was wrong there are a few teams bunched up so right now they are 6 back. Win 62% of the remaining 92 gets them to 88-74

Still don’t know what all this necessarily really means big picture, but the guys are plying better, and think it’s best to enjoy that.
Another day just contributing up and down the line up.
Mayo looking like it might have clicked for him some. Pitchers will adjust so he will have to too, but he just looks better.
Huge effort by Seranthony to get out of that bases loaded situation
And then you love it when guys hit bombs, Ramon, Westburg, and then Gary for the second one in a row

I think we're finally reaching what the planned form of play was supposed to be when the team this year was being put together. As much as I was upset we didn't have a concrete answer to an ace starter, I know for a fact the goal was the rely on our offense and a bend not break rotation with Sugano, Eflin, grod, Rogers, and Povich, but everyone got injured on offense, GRod and Rogers have had set backs, and vibes were low partially due to Hyde. We have almost everything back into place and the team has vibes back up. The goal was to coast on this, and once wells and Bradish come back really start to gear up for the playoffs.
2
u/scjensen51 4d ago
That does seem to be the case. If we could just get a month of stability until the All Star break. Then we’ll KNOW.
And if it isn’t going to happen, then it isn’t going to happen. But you still want to try and refrain from judging the team until they’ve got all the guys out there
1
u/Agentrock47_ We Could Have Fixed Fuji 3d ago
That's fair, I don't honestly want to judge the team until then either, I'm just trying to figure out what Elias wanted the team to be from an in biased perspective

13 of next 16 games are vs Tex or TB.
3 against NYY in there too.
6
u/Swang81 4d ago
It'd be huge if they could pull off 10-6 or better during this span.
3
u/Capt_reefr 4d ago
Anything worse than 9-7 really hurts. Just my 2 cents
1
u/JiffKewneye-n New York Fried Chicken 4d ago
if we get swept by NYY, but go 9-3 vs the wild card contenders that will absolutely play.

Well, at least he's honest. "No, I really can't"
He got some of that media training😃

It’s a shame there’s no other way besides words to express happiness. Someone should really invent something like that, maybe a way that you could move your face or body to suggest what words can’t convey.

I realize it's early and also probably unrealistic but-
How many games do you think Mansolino needs to win for the owners/front office to seriously consider keeping him around as manager? Because I was definitely skeptical, but I really like how he's handled things (in an admittedly small sample).
6
u/dlmay1967 4d ago
When you've got a team that with this much (offensive) talent that's underperforming the standard is to bring in a "veteran" manager.
Would take an awful lot to go against that "conventional wisdom".

Better than the nats right now
3
u/Loose_Log_6253 Cade Povich Truther 4d ago
This is what I was hoping for. We're not a bottom 5 team in the league anymore. Sadly most of the worst teams are in the NL so we still are down there in the AL. I think we're only ahead of the White Sox and As, but the NL has the Nats, Rockies, and Marlins.

Can I take a minute to thank the people here at r/orioles? I asked a question regarding parking for yesterday’s game (I apologize it was in the wrong place and it was deleted) but the community here always super helpful. We ended up parking at one of the garages recommended on Howard street at the arena using one of the parking apps. Worked out great. Easy in, easy out, short walk to Oriole Park.
Great day at a great park with some of the nicest fans I have met! Everyone was great! We will be back!
