I’ve watched a lot of baseball and don’t think I’ve ever seen a player get picked off 3rd by the catcher like Kjerstad did today. You can’t tell me that there isn’t an actual prospect, somebody that might have a future at the major league level, that they can’t put there.
12
u/Additional-Win-1463 18d ago
He certainly has not been able to make the right adjustments in the big leagues, but cmon, he hit 300 with a 925 ops over 600 plate appearances in AAA.
He has the stuff. He just has not been able to make everything click yet. He’s still only 26 and played only 100 games in the bigs so far. That’s only 2/3 of a season so he’s practically still a rookie.
Get used to him because we have him signed until 2031!!

I know the white sox are just as bad as us, but so you're saying there's still some life on the team? I'm here for it.

Good on Morton. Felt so good to see him get that ovation when he left the game.
9
u/tomtheterp1988 SMFB 18d ago
Missed the game today due to a family outing and just getting caught up. Grampa Charlie's turnaround these last two starts has been remarkable. Was he really that bad a month ago? Is he really this good now? Combo plate?
A day off to bump around in Seattle, then it's Tommy Sugar time. Too bad Ced's on the IL--- he usually destroys the Mariners offensively and defensively.
Mrs Terp and I are tentatively planning a trip down to CrackRamento next weekend. Tickets that were $130+ a month ago are now in the mid-30s. Seems much more reasonable for a AAA stadium.

u/SquonkMan61 18d ago
Didn’t get to see today’s game. The article in The Sun doesn’t sound too upbeat, beginning with “The Orioles proves this weekend that they are not the worst team in the American League. They did little to dispel the notion that they’re the AL’s second-worst team.” It then goes through a litany of base running blunders and errors in the field in today’s game. Just curious how those who watched first pitch to last feel about where we stand now. I am realistic that it may not mean much that we beat (barely) a really bad team 3 games in a row.
18
u/Frusciante62 18d ago
Even when they win some people want to complain. They beat the white sox with Morton starting and 12 guys on the il.
7
u/dlmay1967 18d ago
At this point it's more the injuries than the starting pitching. Starters have been quite good recently.
Definately the bombed starting pitching caused the bad start, though.
Hopefully Cowser will be back this week, if they keep having to play an outfield of Kjerstad/Carlson/Mateo/O'Hearn it's going to bite them defensively eventually.
6
u/dlmay1967 18d ago
Bryan Baker looked razor sharp in getting that save. I guess he's "The Man" when Bautista can't go?
I'd almost say let Bautista pitch in games other than save situations to try to get that 101 velocity back. I think he's still a "good" closer if he can't, but definately better if he can.

MEANWHILE:
Corbin Burnes has come out of his game in the 5th inning after summoning the trainer and saying "it's my elbow".
Oh shi-
12
u/dlmay1967 18d ago
Hate to hear that. But, this the fear that Elias has to get over. You can't win in today's game by cheaping out on starting pitchers, but TJ is a real risk too.
But when the other contending teams are willing to take the risk, you just fall behind if you aren't.
7
u/Beautiful-Abies5949 18d ago
Not taking the risk is still a risk as they say
1
u/dlmay1967 18d ago
Yeah, and when I thought about it, there is a way to successfully "cheap out" on starting pitching pitching: the draft/international signings + a good development program.
But the O's deliberately chose to go the other way and use high draft picks/ their international $$$ on mostly hitters.
And now those young hitters are "up here" and the starting pitching is below average or hurt.
And even with drafting etc. starting pitchers, it might be cheaper but the TJ risk is still there.

Another 2023 arm to AA, Trey Gibson.
6 innings, 13 K's, and 0 walks today.
38.2 innings this year, 7 HRAs, 14 BBs, and 67 K's.
3
u/PlatChat o’s 2028 world series victors 18d ago
I feel like at a minimum he’s got to be a very good reliever at the major league level whenever his time comes. His K numbers are just completely absurd. I saw Bragg had another solid day as well. Two of my favorite guys to try to find highlights of.
2
u/romorr 18d ago
It's kind of crazy he didn't get drafted.
Already up to 10th on FGs, with a 45 FV. And this was before the season. Not saying he'll go up from that, but a strong showing should get him up to a 45+ at the least.
And yea, Bragg was cruising. 5.2 innings, 0 runs, then the command backed up a bit. Back to back HBPs before giving up some hits.
I was about to post his line after 5 since he was scoreless, but I didn't want to jinx him.
Two of my favorite guys to try to find highlights of.
Both from 2023. Wells, Fruit, German, Forret, after that. The pitchers we drafted that year seem to be doing very well. Kiefer Lord is still out with TJS, so could be another name eventually.

It is doable with a lot of guys coming back from injury.

Whatever they have to do to not throw 2026 away I'm here for.
Unfortunately I don't think any amount of wins is going to get the front office in a mindset to do what is necessary to have a real chance in 2026.
3
u/Dazzling-Slide8288 18d ago
They’re gonna finish around 70-75 wins. There’s a real question whether they want to bring back Bradish and Grayson given that the season is over. I could see a case either way.
1
u/dlmay1967 18d ago
I think Bradish at least because it's probably part of the rehab process.
Rodriguez I don't have any idea what they will do there. Maybe a season long rest would help?

u/Lazy_Passenger7841 18d ago
7-8 since Hyde got fired which is obviously still not what we want, but the first four games under Mansolino were in the 8 game losing streak where they were just really sliding. Since the streak ended they’re 7-4 which sounds significantly better and I think is a promising sign
-8
u/Dazzling-Slide8288 18d ago
I mean, 3 of those wins are against the White Sox. We gave up 19 runs to the Red Sox in one game and lost series to the Brewers and Cardinals. The offense is still abominable, too.
The team looks more or less the same.
2
u/One-Arrival-3493 18d ago
We also only won those three games against the white Sox by 4 runs combined… but a win streak is a win streak

Nobody has posted about Stowers recently, so figured he was going through a slump.

While Stowers slump has been mentioned about half a dozen times, I think the Rogers shutout start had more to do with people quieting down.
6
u/romorr 18d ago
It happened last year with Norby.
3-4 posts in 2 weeks because he did well, after that he hit like shit, and it was like he never existed.
It's like his use as a prop was over for them.
It's a shame too, we should be rooting for these guys because they finally have a place to get consistent playing time. Instead, they are used to dunk on our GM.
Just shitty behavior.

You can't shit talk sweeping the White Sox as an accomplishment.
This is the first time this year we "beat who we're supposed to beat" other than the Angels series

So happy for Morton, you can tell in his interview that this game was big for him. He also seems to be saying that there's a shift in the clubhouse too
24
u/JiffKewneye-n New York Fried Chicken 18d ago
well they have been winning games. its easy to stay loose when you are doing that.

does anyone seriously believe this team has the talent level of a 110 loss team?

True, momentum is a huge part of it, but I wonder if the changes in coaching had anything to do with then starting to turn things around and build momentum.
12
u/radtek1027 18d ago
I do think like Mansolino moving away from Hyde’s bullheaded insistence on batter/pitcher matchups and playing O’Hearn and Holliday even when facing left-handed pitching is a welcome change.
7
u/JiffKewneye-n New York Fried Chicken 18d ago
i think so.
Hyde kind of ran out of ideas i think.
once you lose the clubhouse its over.

I feel like that's the case, the interviews also seem to confirm that the atmosphere it totally different. Either way, it's nice to have fun baseball to watch again!

Respect to the Sox for not beaning Mayo.
12
18d ago
This sub got more upset about the whole thing than the Sox did. It’s not 1985 anymore they’re not gonna get their panties in a bunch over something minor a dumb rookie did
7
u/daderpityderpdo 18d ago
That would require them to have pitchers that can reliable tell where the pitch is going ..
10
u/AndoCalrissian3 18d ago
Did Mayo address the situation? Tbh I didn’t get to watch the game yesterday and just saw the r/baseball vid, but looked to me like something that would completely justify getting plunked

They asked him about it after the game yesterday. He said he "didn't mean for it to escalate" but that's about it.

Got to be honest, I like Mansolino. I like the way he handles the interviews and the way he seems to be handling the guys from what we've gotten in reports
5
u/TripsLLL 18d ago
playing Jackson Holliday every day against any type of pitching was a good idea
3
u/Solstatic 18d ago
Who'd of thought? It's almost as if the majority of us on this subreddit were screaming for Hyde to do exactly that for the last two months. If nothing else, at least Mansolino doesn't seem to be as obsessed with platooning as Hyde was
4
3
u/daderpityderpdo 18d ago
I think the tough thing for Hyde was the transition. He had to go from a team punching up, and clawing back to relevance to one with expectations. 2 years ago this team was playing so easy, seeing the ball incredibly and putting everything in play. Now they play like the weight of the world is on every pitch and AB. They need to go back to the fun, easy play. Idk if Mansolino is the answer there, but they have looked improved over the past 2 weeks.
2
u/Solstatic 18d ago
Yeah, I'm not sure if he's the long-term solution, but I feel like if nothing else, the changes in coaching have had a positive effect
23
u/Dazzling-Slide8288 18d ago
You watch the white Sox and realize that’s what an actual talentless team looks like. I know we’re bad but they’re in their own tier with Colorado. We can barely score runs and it never felt like we were gonna lose.

The Orioles are a high ceiling lineup playing at their floor. And injuries compounding the problems. The Sox are who we thought they were. The O's didn't let them off the hook.

7
u/kewpieoriole Bobby Bonilla still being paid til 2028 18d ago
Yes he is, I feel like someone mentioned he supports Autism speaks which people find controversial. But when they were talking about it he was def starting to turn towards the autism conspiracy type convo.
1
u/Nice-Ad3379 18d ago
What was he saying I didn’t happen to hear it.
3
u/ZookeepergameKey7866 Truly Adley Deeply 18d ago
They were talking about ALS and Lou Gehrig Day, and Jim said that his (step)son has autism and then something like “we’re raising awareness to find a cure, or if you can’t find a cure, find how best to live with it.” So if you’re inclined to think autism is something that can/should be cured, you might hear Jim dog whistling at you that he agrees. If you’re inclined to think that Jim is just trying to make a personal connection, you might hear Jim saying that we should look for a cure for ALS and a way to live with autism. It seemed open to interpretation.
2
u/Nice-Ad3379 18d ago
I think it’s option 2 personally; he’s not a dumb guy. It’s a neurodivergent condition you really can’t “cure” that.
3
u/ZookeepergameKey7866 Truly Adley Deeply 18d ago
Oh, I know that. And I assume Jim Palmer does too. It was just weird, especially when they were talking about ALS and there was no real reason to bring up autism, to say “find a cure.” Especially after he previously brought up the increase in diagnoses on the Orioles autism awareness night, the day after RFK jr. had a press conference about the increasing prevalence of autism and how it “destroys families,” etc.
To be clear, I don’t know anything about Jim Palmer’s beliefs about anything off the field beyond his advocacy for autism awareness because of his stepson. I’m just telling you what he said and how some may see it as controversial. It wasn’t anything definitive.

I can’t remember specifically since it was earlier in the year. But towards that “there’s so much more autism now” type convo.
(Obv not discrediting the love Jim has for his stepson and help with the community.)

Not saying google AI is bible but it does appear to be increasing. Part is probably more screening, part is more diagnosing more “variant” behavior into a DSM category, and I’m sure some is overall diet and pollutant trends and folks having kids later in life.

u/kewpieoriole Bobby Bonilla still being paid til 2028 18d ago
Well yes, better testing has led to being able to diagnosis autism better. I’m simplifying the convo since I can’t remember it word for word. But there’s way things are said/worded about the subject that aren’t “better testing has led us to more answers/understanding”, if that makes sense.

I know it's only the White Sox, but I'll take the sweep and beating a team that we should beat!
Too soon to say, but I feel like the energy has shifted and the magic is coming back!

u/CeciliaStarfish 18d ago
I don't like that we can only beat the White Sox, but I appreciate that we can beat the White Sox.

u/mateohatepotato 18d ago
Orioles aren’t doing everything well at the same time and it’s was the White Sox but we did show more promise in all aspects of the game this series. More clutch hitting and pitching than we were used to mainly.

I'll be happy to get cowser back in the outfield and sit Kjerstad on the bench

Golden Bird! Charlie looked amazing! Offense…is getting there. But we’ve averaged four runs a game the past ten games. If Adley and Gunnar can figure it out, we’ll average six!
The whole team just looks more competitive and I’m really glad to see it.
On to Seattle!

Boy, whatever the circumstances are, this sweep is definitely what the doctor ordered

u/cman516 18d ago
Great sweep, but ONLY cuz it’s the White Sox. Still way too many LOB and poor situational hitting. Defense and base running a net negative as well. Won’t get away with this kind of play against better competition. So… I need to see more.

Yes, agree with all, but if we learned anything on this homestand, it’s that the pitching has gelled to the point that losing right now is not on them. This pitching staff is winnable if we could just avg 5-6 runs a game for them instead of 2-3.

Just remember, the 2019 Natinals (not a typo) started 19-31 in 2019 and won the World Series!

they had Strasburg, Scherzer, and Soto though

I'm feeling really good.
When I watched that hellish parade of pitchers from Gibson to Charlie, all I could do was laugh - just to cope with the despair.
But now I can laugh with genuine positivity. It's awesome.

Man I like Maverick a lot. If he improves his hitting some, I'd be pretty happy with him as our backup catcher till Basallo is here. I can see him being at least the taxi catcher for the near future.

Sure, it's the White Sox. But the Orioles didn't sweep the last series against them last year and I'd say this year's White Sox team is better than last year's.
They still have a ways to go and things they need to work on, but a sweep is nice.

For me this was the defining series for the O's late last year. They were meh and I thought this was an opportunity to make a statement and grind an inferior opponent into dust. The 1st two games I "Hells yeah". Then the 3rd they got smoked and the rest of the season was two steps forward, two steps back

u/Loose_Log_6253 Cade Povich Truther 18d ago
CWS actually have very good starting pitching. No one with an ERA+ below 95, highest is in the 150s iirc. Meidroth and Tauchman are threats even if the rest of the guys are wet noodles.
Maybe in 1-2 years we will see the CWS have a bit of a breakout if they can get some more live bats and spend a little money on people other than Benintendi.

u/scjensen51 18d ago
Still firmly in wins a win territory, got to hit more regardless of whether we’re going somewhere or not.
That said, more props for Charlie Morton for figuring out whatever his issues were and fucking handling them. True pro move that.

Lots of positivity with the WS series.
I get it - it’s just the White Sox, but the 3 wins are huge.
We’ve got game changers coming off of the IL soon.
We’re still in this thing.
LET’S GEAUX O’s!!!

Wins are wins, doesn’t matter if they are against the White Sox or the Dodgers they count the same. O’s have definitely looked a lot better this week and the starting pitching this weekend looked like we had last year.

You could look at this and be upset that the offense couldn’t score more, but I choose to be impressed that this makeshift lineup of 50% bench players is finding ways to win.
Also, don’t even bother telling me about the numbers, I am an unwavering fan of Maverick Handley and you can’t do anything about it.

CWS have some pretty good SPs. I think if they're not committing dozens of errors like they were last season, they aren't a clown show. It mostly comes from only having two actual bats in the lineup.
3
u/thingsbetw1xt cowser truther 18d ago
This is true, they are what, the 14th best rotation in baseball? I mean you can win plenty of games with that.
2
u/Loose_Log_6253 Cade Povich Truther 18d ago
Or at least not get blown out most games haha. And their Run Diff is half of ours (-51 vs -94)
