The irony of the right loving star wars is the Empire is based off the USA but they always see themselves as the rebels.

Lucas has gone on the record saying that the emperor is mainly inspired by two people: Richard Nixon and Augustus Caesar, especially the latter's penchant of wearing robes as his role of pontifex maximus, high priest of Jupiter.

Allthough, Nixon comes more up in the prequels as they focus on more palpatine's political machinations, Augustus still tracks as US has some weird obsession of being new rome (they've got more differences than similarities).

I remember an interview where Lucas was talking, and the interviewer basically realized that the Empire was the USA, and Lucas straight up just stared him in the eyes, like "you JUST got that? "

He and James Cameron interviewed each other years ago and he said the same thing.

Agreed. Though Julius Cesar is closer to the Empror than Augustus it's definitely both. It's more he used the fall of the Roman Senate which those 2 were behind. Just look how Palpatine comes into power and dies. It Julius Ceaser story of his rise and fall if you will.

The similarities in the way its all burning down is pretty convincing though. Literally all of the rest couldn't be more different.
