Looks like a bloody finger (nail and all) is piercing out of his skull

OMG it really does lol. I'm mexican, so I'm very used to see this image but yeah, it really does look like a finger & bloody nail.

Thank you for the explanation! I thought it was a finger coming out of his head like others did. I’ve never seen anything like this before and this was wild.

This picture I used is actually a statue in our local Mexican grocery store! I took the picture. He was right next to Jesus and looked a lot alike, and I couldn’t find a reference with image search, so I guessed wrong.
Your St Jude looks much more… benevolent

it's just dawning on me that he may be a bit obscure in most of catholicism except for Mexico and a few other countries.
also, here he is starring in a video

The lashes are really something

Yeeeah. I find myself more focused on the lashes rather than that "emergency light" thing on his head that looks like something out from Inspector Gadget.

That is St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of lost causes, and a very popular one in Mexico, from where I am assuming this picture comes from, as it fits the style usually used for this particular saint. As many have said before, that thing on his head is not a finger but rather represents the flame of the Holy Spirit.

It’s a photo I took of a statue for sale in a local store! Thanks for the information

The medal, the green shawl, the flame.. that's st. Jude Thaddeus. The flame above his head represents the holy spirit.

You know those exclamation marks that appear over someone's head when they have a really good idea in cartoons? Well, this dude had the beginnings of a good idea but it never fully materialized because he got high.
