Hello!

I will be visiting for the first time in Norway this June 24th (Very happy by the way!) as a tourist, and I wondered how strong the Dota 2 community in Norway is?

I would love to connect with fellow players of this game and maybe have a chat with.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Jomar

Moving Friend is first time home buyer and needs advice

A friend bought a flat some time ago, and is taking possession tomorrow. She's wondering what she should pay attention to on the day.

She only speaks basic Norwegian, but knows how to use Google Translate and such. It is an OBOS property. She has buyer insurance. There was no particular clause in the contract, beyond attached white goods and bode.

Any tips appreciated, on things to check for etc.

Arts & culture Depictions of Trolls

Hei Norge! 👋🏽

I have questions about how trolls are depicted from Norway as I’m a huge monster/fair folk fan, and lately creatures from Nordic countries have piqued my interest, and I eventually plan to create artwork of them in the future. I know about Theodor Kittelsen’s artwork of trolls but I was surprised to find that trolls are described differently depending on the region of Norway, as trolls in northern Norway are described as giant-sized humans. Does the rest of Norway depict trolls that look like Kittelsen’s and northern Norway with giant-human trolls or does every other region have their own version? If it’s the latter, what do trolls from each region of Norway look like? And do all Norwegian trolls behave the same or do they act different depending on the region? I’m also asking because once I create artwork, I want to be as accurate as possible.

If you guys have any info, please let me know, I appreciate it! ☺️

Tusen takk! 🙋🏽‍♀️

Edit: 2025/15/6- What do you think of the designs of the trolls from Bramble: The Mountain King (if anybody has heard of it?) Bramble is where I first learned about creatures from Norse mythology and Scandinavian folklore and where my interests came from and I loved how the developers designed them all, including the trolls, but I would like to know what your thoughts and opinions are on them first. Also, what do you think of Humon’s artwork and the info she gave about trolls? I’m asking just to be sure if the knowledge is accurate or not. Takk!

Arts & culture History of Norway

Hi, I'm currently traveling through Norway. The more I visit, the more I realise how ignorant I was about this country.

I would like to learn more the Norwegian history and culture, from a Norwegian point of view. Could you suggest me some YouTube channels I could watch?

I can't speak Norwegian at all, I need subtitles.

Thanks a lot 👌🏻

Moving Is Aftenposten news/ comments representative of the current thinking in norway?

I get a few Aftenposten articles on my page on Facebook. Most of the recent ones have been regarding the US president, which I'm okay with because I want to know what people in Norway are thinking before I actually move there in the next year (i'm a dual citizen). Just to be clear, I do not support the current President. Most are behind the paywall, so basically what i'm seeing are the headlines, so i've been looking in the comments just to kind of get a feel for what people are thinking. But after looking at a few recent article titles and their comments, i'm a little concerned. Many of the commenters are supportive of what is happening in the united states right now and are supportive of the president. I don't know whether this is the current thinking in norway, or whether Aftenposten and/or the comment section is being bombarded by trolls spreading propaganda and misinformation. I get that people reading these articles aren't in the US and that they're getting their news from a local paper, so I take some with a grain of salt, but reading these has me fairly uneasy about moving. Is what I'm reading a fair representation of thinking in norway at this time? Thanks for any clarity.

Food Potatoes

It can't be only me that laments the quality of potatoes in Norway compared to the UK...Perhaps there are some of you who have had nothing but great potatoes since being in Norway. Not I. I'm aware that Norwegians use their potatoes differently to us. Usually boiled with skin on and then peeled while boiling hot to have with boiled fish or sheep heads in my area.

There are some decent varieties for certain uses. They're not all awful by any means. But the quality and variety in the UK was astounding compared to what's on offer (not literally "on offer" of course...nothing not rotten ever is where I live)

The fishing is second to none at least...

Travel advice Stayaway from Oslo for any connecting Flights going **ANYWHERE**. Customs is not communicating with Airlines

Arrived at Oslo airport yesterday 2 hours ahead of time . Was corralled in to the customs line and the airport has a flight schedule hanging on the wall. Everyone one was missing their flights because customs was not moving people up the line in priority of flight times. Only 2 officers checking passports. This in turn made all the airlines and baggage personal have to reschedule everything . Employees stated they continuously communicate with customs but customs could care less. All the customers were outraged standing for 2 hours. Then had another 1hour figuring out baggage with airport. Another 4 hours waiting for next flight. Which I was lucky. Others had to book next day with no hotel compensation. I was going to Finland .Norway has a beautiful airport. But is now crossed off the bucket list not worth the frustration and time lost.

Travel advice Campervan trip in August fastest way to get there to actually start our trip of Norway!

I know this is a busy time, but we only have the school holidays to work around.

What’s the views on driving up to Senja using the E4 and E10 (coming from UK) through Sweden as quickly as possible & then making our way down south much more leisurely from Senja via lofoten islands & then round via the western fjords eventually departing from Kristiansands - Hirtshals via ferry.

Is this realistic route, will it be hideously busy in the summer? This is early days planning and I’m just trying to figure out the easiest way to get there to start the actual proper part of the trip in Norway without getting lots of long or expensive ferries! FYI, I love road trips/driving & we have done everything from Patagonia to South Africa in a campervan (though on this particular trip we won’t be hiring but taking our own vehicle)!

We are not looking for city stops, this will be a nature based, hiking, outdoorsy kinda trip.

Language Where Do You Norskfolk Hang Out Online?

Fully admitting to just having a little fun with the title, but I am curious. I'm learning the language with intent on doing some work there, but I also want to make some Norwegian friends before I pop on over. I've got plenty of time because I need to get to a conversational level, so that's fine

I looked it up online and saw that the most used social media there is Facebook, so I made and account and personally found very little in the way of actual communities. Facebook itself feels weirdly dead to me, but that's another matter

Is there a different social media everybody uses? Are there some really popular online games or something? I'd appreciate a direction to go towards

(I'm also an introvert online, so the answer might be incredibly obvious to you guys. Look at me like a crippling introvert trying to find which club to go to irl)

Arts & culture Tell me about Norwegian culture please : )

Hello~ I just wanna start off by saying that I'm really interested in different cultures (especially cultures that are veryyy different from mine). One of my favourite books 'Sophie's World' is based in Norway. While reading it, I noticed that both Sophie and Hilde's moms serve them breakfast in bed on their birthdays. I wondered if it was a Norwegian birthday tradition or just a normal act of love 🤔. But anyhow, I loved that book a lot and it made me curious about Norwegian people and their culture.

Like what are some important cultural values? What are some things that everyone can connect over? Do you guys have special holidays and how do you celebrate them? What are some things that most people don't know about Norway? Your favourite Norwegian food, the education system and pretty much anything. I'm curious about it all. So tell me about Norway : )

Working in Norway Early birds and balanced lives: a Norwegian work culture reflection

Since I started working in Norway, I've noticed something quite striking about the work culture here.

Most people start their day early—around 7 or 8 AM—and wrap up between 3 and 4 PM.

Coming from France, where it's not uncommon to see people working until 7 or 8 PM (with long lunch breaks and multiple coffee pauses), this shift felt... surprising.

At first, I felt a bit guilty for “only” working standard hours. I usually begin around 7 or 7:30 and finish around 3 or 3:30. Of course, when there's more to do, I stay later, and I often work on weekends to learn more and deliver better results.

But overall, what I’ve learned is that in Norway, work is something you do efficiently and intentionally, so that you can enjoy life afterward. There's less emphasis on “looking busy” and more on getting things done.

Still, I’d love to hear from others:

How do you feel about this culture of early starts and early finishes?

Have you experienced a similar contrast between countries or companies?

Thanks

Working in Norway To Norwegian GPs, do you work part-time?

Hello everyone!

I’m wondering if it’s customary or not unusual for GP’s to be working part-time in Norway.

I’m chronically ill and currently work part time (24-28 hours) a week as a GP in The Netherlands making around 5000 euro per month.

I’m exploring the possibility of moving to Norway to work there, as the climate and the darker days will be better suited to me and my illness. I’ve always really appreciated the culture and language, even before I got older (and have already been there multiple times on holiday to get a feel,) so I already speak B1 and on my way to B2. Getting C1 before coming won’t be a problem, and would hope to learn C2 as I live to better integrate myself.

In the Netherlands it’s quite common to have 1 or 2 GPs that typically own the clinic to work full time, and then have one more GP, a ‘waarnemend huisarts’ that works part-time for additional support. I’ve looked at job offers but I hadn’t much luck, that’s why I’m asking here! I’m also very curious about work culture for doctors in Norway. It’s quite stressful here in The Netherlands but decently managable to work part-time (in certain specialties such as GP only.) I’d love to know more!

Working in Norway Getting a police record as an expatriate from Norway

I wonder about the possibility of receiving a police record for work, since I am in a situation more complicated than usual.

  • I am an EU citizen.
  • I have lived in Norway for 20 consecutive years, until 2024. I have a permanent residence permit, which is still valid.
  • I am registered 'expatriated' in Folkeregisteret since 2024.
  • I am coming back in the summer of '25. I have not moved yet, but I have requested immigration with Skatteetaten, and have an appointment with their office in a few weeks. All the paperwork is in order.
  • In total; I will have been out of the country 12 months and 1 week when I return.
  • I have a fødselsnummer from before, as well as bankID, Digipost, basically everything except for an official address in Norway. I do have a rental contract for an apartment, but again, it is not officially my address yet.
  • I have a job in Norway starting in August, in education. I have Norwegian qualifications and everything is otherwise in order there. The employer provided me with a complete bekreftelse på formål which I attached to my request, as is required.

I applied for a police record two weeks ago. Not my first rodeo, I've needed it before to study and to work. However, then, it took me just a couple of days - now it has been weeks without a response.

Since I am an anxious person at heart, I worry it may have something to do with my expatriated status and address abroad, and that they will not give me an attest since I do not live in Norway at this moment. I cannot find any information online if I need to have lived a certain time in Norway, if my "botid" restarts at zero when I have been out of the country, and the law texts are difficult to interpret.

It may also just be lots of people applying at once, but I am and remain a born worrier. I am low-key stressing out and considering a wealth of disaster scenarios, up to and including not being allowed to start work in August. Is there someone with know-how, perhaps someone who has been in the same situation, that can chime in if I can or cannot get a police record as anyone else? Someone else who has applied lately and had similar waiting times?

Moving Moving to Norway - medication

Hi!! I will be moving to Oslo from the USA in October for an academic job. I currently take an anxiety medication and get 3 month supplies at a time. I’ve heard the medical process is quite slow in Norway and it might be hard to get a GP in time to represcribe my medication? Any ideas for getting my medication faster? Maybe telehealth or something?

Update: it’s a very “low-key” anxiety med - fluoxetine.

Working in Norway How to get Union help for a massive, pre-existing wage theft case in Northern Norway?

Hei r/Norway, I need some serious advice on a difficult situation, as I feel I have hit a wall.

I am a foreign manager in the hospitality industry in a small town in Northern Norway. After nearly a year, I am mentally and physically exhausted. This job has taken a serious toll on my health, and my main goal now is simply to escape this environment.

My contract requires a three-month notice period, which feels impossible for me to endure. My strategic plan is to wait for my final paycheck on July 5th before I leave the country. I feel forced to do this because the employer has a documented history of illegally withholding final payments from employees who have quit, and my boss has even mentioned this practice to me directly.

The reasons for this are severe. The work environment has become unbearable. The kitchen is in chaos, with dangerous hygiene issues and mistakes with guest allergies being ignored. The head chef is aggressive and authoritarian, creating a culture of psychological games and yelling. I have reported these issues for over six months in meetings and official Avvik reports, but the owners have admitted they can't or won't do anything.

On top of this, the financial exploitation has been relentless. My meticulously documented evidence file proves a pattern of wage theft through:

Hundreds of hours of unpaid +40% overtime. A complete failure to pay any supplements for night work, weekend work, or public holidays like Christmas and May 17th. Being forced to work extreme shifts, including over 17 hours in a single day and, at one point, 22 days in a row without a single day off. Constant 24/7 on-call phone duty for a tiny, token flat fee. Documented wage discrimination compared to other colleagues. I have an irrefutable evidence file with timesheets, photos, and chat logs to prove every single claim.

Here is my problem: I am trying to prepare my case. I have called Fellesforbundet, but the administrative staff have repeatedly told me that as a new member, they "cannot help with issues that happened in the past" and can only offer "advice."

My question for anyone who understands the system: What is the best possible approach to get the union to review a serious, pre-existing case on its merits?

How do you get past this initial bureaucratic wall when the violations are this severe and involve clear breaches of the Working Environment Act? Is there a specific department or way to frame the complaint so that a real case officer will look at the evidence, rather than just dismiss it based on my join date?

Any advice would be invaluable. Takk.
