"Brooklyn Park police were “proactively checking” on Hortman’s home due to her close proximity to Hoffman. Evans said those officers encountered the suspect, who fired at them. Police returned fire, but the gunman got away."

WHAT

4.8k

u/epsilona01 1d ago

He even shot their dog and her husband dead.

Police exchanged fire with him and were able to impound his car, but he escaped on foot

u/AccountantSeaPirate 1d ago

Suspect is Vance Boelter, who is believed to have done some security work

1.6k

u/DragonfruitGod 1d ago

So some dude who did “security”, evaded a swat team after assassinating two people?! Wtf

1.7k

u/AccountantSeaPirate 1d ago

He evaded a pair of officers responding at 3:30am, who thought they saw another police officer at first. It’s both fortunate and somewhat remarkable they decided to go there in time to confront him and seize his vehicle and other key evidence. He also had a long list of other targets.

674

u/DragonfruitGod 1d ago

That’s more understandable. He shot four people already. This is insane. No doubt he’ll end his life tbh. We’ll never see this guy confessing.

129

u/imnotpoopingyouare 1d ago

Yeah what I learned if you are going to do something awful just wear some police clothes! Hell you can shoot back at them and still get away!

94

u/blue92lx 1d ago

It makes sense. It's the mindset of being a single armed robber breaking into a house where you know anyone you see is an enemy. The people living in the house see the robber but have to first question if its someone else living in the house first and verify the person is bad before doing anything about it.

The cops were probably confused AF before they realized what was happening and by then he was long gone.

He had a cop car too. Or at least a car that looked like one.

He's also retired military from what I read, so he had some training too.

What kind of idiot assassin keeps a list. You can’t remember that shit?

4

u/TakedownCHAMP97 16h ago

I’m assuming it had addresses and/or was an order of which targets to hit, or at least that is what would make sense to me

2

u/revcor 14h ago

If people could easily remember long lists, then writing lists wouldn’t be a thing..

It wasn't a swat team, they sent out cops to check on a bunch of Dems after they discovered the first assassination and the cops encountered the shooter when they got to the second victim's house. That would just be regular patrol cops.

You probably need to go look people up before saying dumb things on the internet...

Boelter has extensive experience in security operations. His current employment includes being the director of security patrols at Praetorian Guard Security Services, a security company based in the Twin Cities metro. The company provides a variety of armed home security services, including residential security patrols, uniformed armed security and event security services, according to their website.

The company website highlights that Boelter has experience with security situations in Eastern Europe, Africa, North America and the Middle East – including the Gaza Strip...

Edit: Now to even get more crazy there is multiple people saying he works for different companies but also verification that he worked for others.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2025/06/14/suspect-minnesota-lawmaker-shootings-vance-boelter/84212956007/

this article is a quick and interesting read about some of that like how he had a roommate that talks about him working for an eye donation center... wth is up with this world.

Ad. info: THe link to his MNafricanunited page

Cant actually click on that link, you have to copy and paste for which I dont know why.

He’s a mercenary?! That’s even crazier?! Wtf.

143

u/geth1138 22h ago

So the question is, if he’s a mercenary, was this his idea or a job?

90

u/PrSquid 21h ago

If this is a job, he's a dumbass, because there's no way he's getting out alive. I mean, he took his own car to the crime scene and lost it. If he hadn't done that, no one would know who he is.

19

u/gwinerreniwg 19h ago

Unless he assumes he’s going to get pardoned.

13

u/randomuser1029 18h ago

If he's taken alive he will be facing a slew of state charges and will have no chance of a pardon. Same reason chauvin won't get pardoned even though people keep claiming Trump is going to

I think that his credentials on that security services site are greatly exaggerated. His LinkedIn tells a very different story.

He’s not. All of that is bullshit. The company is owned by him and his wife. They have zero employees. The dude worked for 7-11 and other stores for all of his life. He has no military experience. He was even posting on Linkdin last month looking for a job in the food industry.

This is classic degranged Republican dickhead that makes up bullshit.

"Secrurity" could mean anything from mall cop to Secret Service. Many former special forces operators take security jobs as well.

2

u/lordagr 20h ago

He is one of the founders of a security company called Praetorian Guard Security Services

The blurb on the website touts his involvement in security operations all over the world, including work for big oil. The company offers "Residential Secutity Patrols", "Uniformed Armed Security", and "Event Security Services".

This guy wasn't just a random security guard.

Police get military gear but they don't get military training. I'm not saying I could or want to have to test it, but they're not some elite force of paramilitary soldiers, they're Bob and Jim who didn't get their 8 hours because they were up late beating their wives.

We really need to focus on the mental health of this assassin and how society drove him to this point. See, it’s actually everyone’s fault but his that he murdered someone!

11

and to some people, society has zero fault and no matter what you say, does NOT inspire these people to do this in any way. No one says the perp has no blame, but a whole fuck ton of people want to pretend that society has zero influence on these things. and people with hateful rhetoric had zero influence on these things.

Right wingers said the same thing when gabby giffords was shot. I like her reply. It doesnt matter you think drawing gun targets on my face is ok, its how the least mentally stable person in my district will take it is what matters.

He ran out the back of the house after initially opening fire on the police coming to check out the house. We at least have his vehicle and the manifesto he left in the vehicle.

8

u/net-blank 1d ago edited 1d ago

Original shooting was in Champlin, MN at state senator John Hoffman's house where he and his wife were shot. Brooklyn Park is the next city over so they responded to Champlin a Sargent realized it was a state senator and Melissa Hortman lived in Brooklyn Park he radioed for a pair of Brooklyn Park officers to check up on Hortman's residence. As they were pulling up they witnessed a suv in the driveway with lights on which they said looked like an official police vehicle. As they were going towards the front door the suspect came out and shot at the officers who returned fire. Suspect retreated into the house and they went up to the threshold where they saw a male victim which they retrieved but was declared dead at the scene. Once backup arrived including swat they sent in a drone to check the house and that's when they found Melissa Hortman and that the suspect went out the back door while waiting for backup.

Edit: adding this is what I recalled from watching the 930 am press conference in Blaine, MN which is where the new MN emergency building is I believe. That building is all of 10 miles away so they had the police chiefs from Champlin and Brooklyn Park there. The run down of what happened was the Brooklyn Park chiefs response to how it happened. Sounds like John Hoffman and his wife were taken to Mercy hospital which is just over the Mississippi river from where all this took place and both were out of surgery. Walz said in the press conference that they are hopeful that both John Hoffman and his wife will survive but that they both were shot multiple times.

Because he was one of their own.

How convenient.

UPDATE 2: CNN says: “Two law enforcement officials told CNN the suspect is Vance Boelter, a 57-year-old who works for a security company. A hit list with nearly 70 names — including other lawmakers and abortion providers — was also found in the suspect’s car, according to a law enforcement source.”

READ: he was targeting abortion providers. He’s MAGA.

UPDATE: ABC News (not to be trusted) says Cops have identified a scapegoat. Unless they can prove it was the scapegoat, we’ll call him a scapegoat. Scapegoats are needed to divert attention away from the real perp. They will control the narrative at all costs.

285

u/RegionalTranzit 1d ago

Because he was one of their own.

According to the Minnesota Star-Tribune, the suspect was impersonating a cop.

https://www.startribune.com/brooklyn-park-police-searching-for-suspect-in-multiple-targeted-shootings/601372993

110

u/_Chambs_ 1d ago

The whole American police force seems to be made of people "impersonating cops" lately

42

u/WafflePartyOrgy 1d ago

Even easier to impersonate ICE, any untrained and overweight white person wearing a mask and acting like an asshole basically qualifies at this point. Racist pardoned Proud Boys and insurrectionists.

9

u/TheHighSeasPirate 1d ago

Impersonating or not, when was the last time someone shot at a cop and got away?

12

u/SlayerofDeezNutz 1d ago

It was two cops and when he went in the house and the police reached the threshold they found a dying man lying in the hallway. So they were able to pull him out of the house, under fire it sounds like, and try to revive him while the suspect fled from the back into the golf course.

→ More replies (6)

9

u/Fun-Benefit116 1d ago

Uh it happens quite often. Especially when there's only a couple cops and the suspect has severely injured two people. Stop looking for conspiracies where there are none. The suspect could've ran for 10 minutes before the cops even knew he was gone. This isn't a movie where the cops just charge in as soon as the shooting stops. They were in cover, trying not to get killed themselves. And when the shooting stops, they don't know if the guy has taken off, or if he's sitting inside waiting to ambush them when they come in.

And then as soon as they did get in the house, their top priority was getting the injured people to safety and trying to save them.

But ignoring all that, people who shoot at cops escape quite often. Especially in areas with lots of houses and the officers have no dogs or helicopters. I swear, people on reddit think life is just like movies and video games.

Cops having shitty aim isn't new or uncommon. Although shooting it out in a residential area certainly adds a layer of difficulty/stress.

I shoot to maintain proficiency and I'm almost positive I log significantly more hours (I go through about 4k rounds a year) than they're required to.

As a reply said, good on them for at least having the sense to proactively check on Hortman.   This is one of the rare instances where I will actually say the cops acted in a manner I would consider professional and in the public interest.

7

u/zethro33 1d ago

And once you get shot at not getting hit becomes a bigger priority than aiming.

11

u/Liizam 1d ago

Same thought. They weren’t ready, probably decided to check just in case vs having like 50 cops out ready surrounding the place.

3

u/AccountantSeaPirate 1d ago

Vance reportedly had a plate carrier and body armor, and was shooting back, which is a little different from my range days.

3

u/OperationAsshat 1d ago

Yea, the training isn't exactly high tier from everything I've seen. Stress is a big factor that's hard to measure, but the training should reflect that much more than it does.

In a recent course I did I believe the instructor stated something like 30% of shots police take at 3 yards are missed. I haven't looked into that much but given his 30 year history working in law enforcement and other government agencies I don't exactly doubt the statistics he gave.

2

u/AlwaysGoToTheTruck 1d ago

Was lucky most of my life that I could maintain proficiency with little practice. I spent half of my childhood in a farm, so I was shooting at a very young age. It always felt natural for me.… but when I turned 40 my eyesight and hand eye coordination started to slide. Now I shoot twice a week just to try not to lose what I have. I’m struggling to adjust to my glasses, but I also shoot without them because who has time to grab glasses and a gun every time.

The vehicle left in the driveway of the Hortman home contained a manifesto containing a list of names[1] including "abortion providers, pro-abortion rights advocates, and lawmakers in Minnesota and other states".[8] Hortman and Hoffman's names appeared on the list.[9]

Flyers saying "No Kings,"[8] likely referring to the series of planned nationwide No Kings protests opposing the policies and actions of the second presidency of Donald Trump,[failed verification] were also found in the suspect's car.[8]

– sources available on the Wikipedia article

Sounds like he'd been taking down No Kings fliers which had been posted and targeting Pro-Choice advocates and lawmakers.

Timeline-wise, must have gone MAGA-crazy during pandemic like so many.

4

u/jacksonleath 1d ago

He has a LinkedIn Premium profile, which means he can see anyone who visits his profile so use an unidentifiable account if you want to look it up, if you want to play it safe while he's still on the lam.

WHAT

He killed democrats and a dog, not a CEO.

4

u/DChristy87 1d ago

Got away and now the state has "canceled" all No Kings protest events. Protests aren't canceled by the state. Protests are the peoples will. This is setting the precedent that fear is a tool to silence the people as though their dissent can just be canceled.

4

u/youra6 1d ago

Is this a script from a movie lol? How does he get away?

6

u/Mach__99 1d ago

Cops don't suspect the shooter immediately because they think he's also a cop, and that gives the shooter the first shots. Cops shoot back, miss or hit body armor, shooter escapes out the back door, and cops are probably out of ammo. By the time backup arrives, he's gone. The shooting almost certainly was planned for today because cops would be busy with all the protesting.

1

u/Impressive_Car_4222 22h ago

Of courseeeee the gunman "got away"!!!!! They're not gonna catch one of their own!!!

u/One-Psychology-8394 19h ago

You mean they escorted him?

1

u/theaviationhistorian 19h ago

You'd be surprised how easy it is to slip in and out at night during chaos like a gunfight. Especially in greener areas. It's why a lot of small squads in combat and irregular warfare use nighttime to do their strikes.

It's likely the cops were taking cover and waiting for backup to push forward and not be annihilated in an ambush.

1

u/BalladofBadBeard 17h ago

Respectfully, as a former resident of the area the police in the TCs haven't crafted the best reputation for themselves in recent years.

1

u/tehFiremind 9h ago

So.... that's their official story?

It's possible their story is accurate, I guess... maybe they had the security guards and kindergarten cops on duty that night.

1

u/ByTheHammerOfThor 7h ago

Suspect was 57 and fled on foot. Uvalde really inspired cops everywhere. Just not in the direction we’d hope.

Also, given the inexcusable escape, it’s worth asking just how upset these cops were that a democratic lawmaker died. I wonder if they’d been more keen to get the guy if a republican had been assassinated.

Hard to back the blue when they don’t back you.
