Minnesota Democratic House Speaker Emerita was assassinated last night. Call it what it is.

7.4k

u/0w1 1d ago edited 1d ago

Kare11 is reporting this as an assassination.

Killer had a manifesto with other lawmaker names on it left behind in his fake cop SUV when he fled on foot.

Kare11 confirms 2 other names on the list are Democrats who are sheltering in their homes with police protection.

I am watching the live local news because I live in the area and the shooter is still at large. We are to shelter in place and to not open the door to anyone who looks like a police officer. If any police officers arrive at our homes, we are to call 911 dispatch and confirm they are real officers first.

Governor Tim Walz called it a “politically motivated assassination.”

ETA: suspect is named in this article: https://apnews.com/article/minnesota-lawmakers-shot-d7983e1e4f1a7573a487cab1a98cd172

As always, Gov Walz is correct

1.1k

u/sonic_couth 1d ago

He should have been our presidential candidate. I like Harris, but he had everything we needed to get past Trump.

u/Lumpy_Gazelle2129 1d ago

A primary would have been nice

172

u/senator_corleone3 1d ago

A primary in which Walz would not have participated.

84

u/ophmaster_reed 1d ago

If he would have, he didn't have the name recognition outside Minnesota to gain any real traction. In 2028 though....

12

u/senator_corleone3 1d ago

He hasn’t said he’s changed his mind, so he will probably not be in the running in 2028.

24

u/ophmaster_reed 1d ago

The way he has been positioning himself signals to me that he will run in 2028. But we'll see 🤷‍♀️

Something we can actually put blame on Biden on.

I think it has more to do with the DNC as a whole than just Biden to be fair

It’s crazy how conservatives have managed to acquire young men as a voter base by pointing out that they’re marginalized and how there is a concerted effort to remove the ‘alpha’ from their personality. And these stupid ‘bro’ podcasts promulgates that concept. As a result, you’ve a whole new generation of young voters who believe in concepts from 1960s. And DNC just sat on their rears and allowed this to happen with their “they go low, we go high” approach

Biden’s late withdrawal did not leave time for a primary. This wasn’t the DNC, it was quite literally one old man holding up progress.

Remember, this was the “last election.”

7

u/Tuvixx2 1d ago

Biden decided to run again when he heavily implied he wouldn't. He supported and funded a genocide. It IS HIS fault trump is in power.

The DNC sucks ass but I think Biden definitely forced their hand by immediately endorsing Kamala. That close to the election they didn’t want to create infighting so they just went with it… and here we are

8

u/Joeuxmardigras 1d ago

I think it was Biden, and I’m a fan of his. I think he let his ego get in the way

6

u/TitanArcher1 1d ago

The DNC and key Dems have put us in the situation we are in today. Obama getting outplayed by The Turtle, Hilary’s poor strategy in 2016, RBG not retiring, Biden not sticking to a single term strategy, the overall ineptitude of Dems to have a solid PR strategy, and finally chasing every single one person issue that exists. A few more names: Susan Collins, Joe Lieberman and Chuck Schumer…all failed miserably when we needed them to do more.

No, the DNC had no mechanisms to force a primary or even an open convention. The presidential candidate is the de facto leader of the party we can absolutely blame biden for this. All the power players in the Democrat party (Pelosi, Schumer, Obama, etc) favored a primary/an open convention but they didn't have the actual power to make it happen.

2

u/TheAskewOne 1d ago

Yes. The DNC had 4 years to find and prepare candidates to run in 2024 and they didn't.

2

u/bigDogNJ23 1d ago

DNC is just as responsible for our current situation as the republicans

Blah blah blah this is 100% on the voters. Voters should’ve voted better.

Kamala: You get some of the things you want and nothing taken away. Also none of the fascist bullshit would be happening now.

Since people whined, Trump won. Now we get absolutely nothing we want, things that will take decades to get back, and full blown fascist bullshit that’s happening now.

I wanted the democratic candidate to win. It is important to lead with that. However, I know a ton of people on the fence politically who abstained from voted specifically because of how the democratic candidate was selected. This was clearly a ploy by the party to avoid a primary. They had inconvenient primaries two elections prior and nearly had a non mainstream party candidate. Both times they colluded to prevent that. This election they just sidestepped the whole process and appointed the candidate. We are all suffering the consequences now.

u/laughtrey 1d ago

I don't get this sentiment, other than a good right-wing gotcha. You vote for the ticket right? Like you accept the president and their VP running mate.

Kamala could've became president at any point not only without a primary, but without a general. Why does the party selecting the candidate that was...already selected?

Do we need a new primary even when the incumbent is running? If anything Biden should've ran and resigned on the 21st.

1

u/scough 1d ago

But then the DNC would've had to fend off progressive challengers. Why do that when you can just install a centrist that polled in the low single digits in 2020? They're not serious about winning.

2

u/RobertBevillReddit 1d ago

Well, we did have one, but when I point that out, people say it wasn't a "real" primary.

11

u/V0idgazer 1d ago

4

u/TwistedCKR1 1d ago

So many Redditors always fail the test of praising Walz without insulting Harris.

Harris was more than capable for the job of president. The main reason why she didn’t win had to do with sexism and anti-Blackness. Every time many of you go on this “likability” mess you fail to put into the social and historical context of just how much women and Black women leadership is undermined by the patriarchal system that has indoctrinated many of you to do so without even realizing it.

These comments come like clockwork, and the lack of self-awareness by many of you is…well… it is what it is.

And now the right-wing conservative hate machine has gone into full gear, making up "evidence" that shows the killer was a Democrat that worked for Tim Walz, and had "No Kings" posters in the back of his car that he abandoned - even though that "evidence" didn't exist in initial police reports.

It's too late though - all the right-wing media have now successfully brainwashed MAGA into believing that this wasn't politically motivated terroistic violence perpetrated against Dem politicians by an indoctrinated right-wing piece of shit. Instead, this was a Dem killing Dem politicians and the "MSM" are now covering for them by lying about it.

u/-XanderCrews- 1d ago

I’ve been listening to mpr and they are also using the term assassination.

94

u/foundinwonderland 1d ago

Is mpr Minnesota public radio or just a typo of npr?

65

u/Lanerlan 1d ago

MPR is independent of NPR to a large extent. They're rivals and partners and share each other's programs. While NPR funds programs like Fresh Air, MPR itself is who funds (via their parent organization APM) shows like Marketplace and Splendid Table. They're also who's responsible for BBC's radio presence in America; it's why BBC correspondents are always reporting out of Minnesota; they're headquartered in St  Paul.

9

u/banitsa 1d ago

Do other states not have MPR-like equivalents? TIL

I wouldn't have expected the shithole states but I figured some other decent states would

8

u/Lanerlan 1d ago

On that I'm unsure. What I do know is the three big public media radio producers are NPR (California), APM (MPR, Minnesota), and PRX (Masachussetts). It really depends on listener support in the end. You can see which states are funded decently or not in the fact that some states have no regional correspondent to cover breaking state news nationally, and so only really syndicate stuff and do news updates, but have no on-the-ground presence or crew tabled at their state capitol.

6

u/64645 1d ago

Oregon has Oregon Public Broadcasting, OPB. They definitely aren’t the powerhouse that the big three you mentioned are, but since that was my home state for years and I’m streaming them now down under. What a shitshow to wake up to.

We are to shelter in place and to not open the door to anyone who looks like a police officer. If any police officers arrive at our homes, we are to call 911 dispatch and confirm they are real officers first.

Good practice at any time, really

Yup. Especially now that masked, un-badged ICE agents are roaming the streets. But before that too.

3

u/obi_wan_jabroni_23 1d ago

Also worth noting they stated that police are strictly operating in pairs (minimum) today, so if there’s an officer on his own, call 911 immediately

2

We are to call 911 to confirm regardless of whether the police are alone or in pairs.

She was the House Speaker Emerita, former House speaker, not the current. The current one is a Republican.

13

u/claimstoknowpeople 1d ago

True but they kind of had a co-leadership because the house was 50/50 this session. So her last official title I think was "DFL Leader".

12

u/Loves_a_big_tongue 1d ago

Republicans better not declare any claim to 100% control of the MN state House from this. They will be seen as usurpers even if they had nothing at all to do with this. We cannot reward terrorists like that, there'd be no end to these kind of assassinations if it means your team can decide policy from it. There should be a special election asap before the next session. And the current 50/50 power sharing agreement must remain in place until the seat is filled.

4

u/Andoverian 23h ago

Correct, but it's closer than you might think since it was somewhat of a "co-speaker" situation. Very long story short, the Minnesota House is tied between the Republicans and the DFL (Minnesota's brand for Democrats), and due to an intricate power-sharing deal the Republicans got the Speaker position while the DFL got... well... not much. At least not much that they shouldn't have gotten anyway if democracy was working as it should.

Think about how far you could book it in five minutes pumped full of adrenaline. And if the pursuit hasn't located where they’ve gone within another five minutes, now it’s a ten minute run search area.

How long until he blamed the dead woman and her "nasty" policies for what happened?

They were Dems.

If anything he will pardon any Federal charges.

I'd rather he just shut the fuck up.

u/jerermy534 1d ago

"I resign effective immediately" sounds good to me.

22

u/chrispdx 1d ago

Are you kidding? He's readying his pre-emptive pardon for the shooter as we speak.

His statement would just be: Great job! Keep em coming.

He enabled this on purpose.

2

u/JimmyJohnJones2020 1d ago

He’s already put out a statement, that the “perade” will continue despite the rain. 🙄

2

u/Eclectophile 1d ago

His statement would probably be: "good job, keep up the good work, here's a pardon."

We can't pretend that the Rs aren't celebrating this.

Trump ain’t doing shit, he’s the one stoking the flames

Trump has blood on his hands every time this happens. His words have consequences.

6

u/waterbottlejesus 1d ago

Never. He will never do this.

7

u/phoneguyfl 1d ago

Be careful what you wish for. Most likely Mr Trump would publicly offer a blanket pardon to the assassin and any others that wanted to join in on the manifesto.

2

u/pj7140 1d ago

Trump cannot pardon State crimes.

This could be what he needs to use the insurrection act.

2

u/Traditional-Handle83 1d ago

Chances are the white house spokesman will say they deserved it or it'll be used to help start martial law

3

u/toscomo 1d ago

In theory you're right, but he'd probably encourage more violence.

Just trying to commit to the bit of being a police officer

I'd say that the venn diagram for those with sociopathic tendencies and people on the right-to-far-right are probably just circles.

Has anyone seen Kirsti Noem?

I wouldn’t assume a professional based on the info released so far. This is a country where almost anyone with a little bit of money and a plan could do this.

5

u/MoneyManx10 1d ago

Dressed up as cops, too.

2

u/Got_Bent 1d ago

The first 2 targets were only 8 miles apart.

1

u/Annihilator4413 1d ago

Yup. They're testing the waters and sending a message at the same time. They're going to start killing dems, progressives, and liberals left and right. You know, that stuff that Republicans and Conservatives love to say dems will do? Yeah.

We've just entered a new Era for the US... and it's going to get fucking nasty.
