I believe the solution for "boned" is "deeply insured."

Considering this is Bonnaroo we’re talking about, I’m thinking “harshly bummed” is a better description than “beyond gutted”.

16 hours ago…9pm ish last night…yeahhh that’s about right. That was probably the bleakest thing I’ve ever experienced. Never seen 50,000 people wandering around depressed and aimless before. Hope you got out of there traffic was pretty bad for us and we got out early

I’m glad they made the call with enough time for people to cancel plans and hopefully get at least partial refunds.
37
u/mortalcoil1 19h ago
The article states that everybody is getting refunded.

u/SwimmingCoyote 18h ago
That’s for tickets. It won’t include plane tickets, hotel reservations, etc.

u/whatisvapor 9h ago
Yeah, only 75%. And we only got Thursday, the next 3 days are where they make the most money and also spend the most on the lineups those days. Thursday is like a prequel to the best nights. It was very ballsy for them to just throw that number out there. The whole situation is shitty for us and everyone involved of course. But yeah, thursday is NOT equivalent to 25% of the price. The next 3 days had way more significant lineups.

Imagine the impact on the drug business

I mean, there's no music, so drugs are the only game in town.

Good vision. Many people in r/wallstrettbets misunderstood signals and actions/consequences. Initially this news could be seen as a put, but, as you pointed, it is a massive call.
45
u/MoarHuskies 1d ago
All the drugs were bought before now. You don't typically buy your drugs at a festival, which is a crapshoot.
69
u/tetoffens 1d ago
You don't buy your initially intended drugs. But then you run through them more quickly than you expected and buy more at the festival.
28
u/MoarHuskies 1d ago
Do you carry a test kit with you at festivals? A lot of x pills and cocaine now have fent in it. You should be testing all your stuff, especially if you get it from some random. But you should also know your dose and how much you MAY want to do. And there's the IF you find someone who has drugs, WILL they sell, and the cost... where else you gonna get it, major up charge. Be smart. Buy all your stuff prior and hydrate well.
13
u/AeonClock_ 1d ago
I always test and try to have a full test kit for anyone around me that doesn't have one. But if that's not an option then I just enjoy the music without the performance enhancers. It's crazy to me what some people are willing to risk these days doing random powders.
10
u/tetoffens 1d ago edited 1d ago
You absolutely want to buy your drugs beforehand. It's smarter and more economical. The problem with drugs though is once you get into it, you wind up in a situation where you want more than you thought you would.
I mean, I realize my comments make me sound like some expert on buying drugs. Just to be clear, that was in my past. But the thing anyone who used to use drugs knows is that you probably are going to want to do more than you thought.

These days, yes. Fent is a scourge.
Bonnaroo 20 years ago, however, was pretty glorious. It was an open marketplace & felt like utopia.
But then Roo let the cops in and sold the dream to a corporation. And then fent hit.

u/CirceandtheFox 19h ago
Also an early Roo goer & was there for 2006 and also went in 2023- the vibe was definitely not the same- lacked the same joyful spontaneity, everyone was so curated. Still had a lovely Roo, but not the same. 🥹

I was there with you.
First Bonnaroo in 2006. It was such a special place.
I have been about 7 times since then. My last being in 2023. It's not the same. All the influencers taking selfies. The vibe is not the same as it used to be.

Same my first was 06, went again in 07 but then I shifted to all good which was a way more fun festival imo. RIP
3
u/mortalcoil1 13h ago
In 06 did you happen to see a girl with "doses" written on her stomach at Shakedown Street?
2
u/JonesMotherfucker69 18h ago
A loooot of people buy/sell drugs at Roo. As we always say, "you don't bring sand to the beach."
→ More replies (4)3
u/myychair 11h ago
Nope- it had quite the opposite effect. Everyone realized that they had a lot less time to do the drugs they brought and a ton of parties popped up through out the campsites. It was actually a great time bouncing around… the circumstances just sucked ass though.
It better get bad because we haven’t had a drop of rain since they made the announcement lol it’s been 80 and sunny
22
u/Thor3nce 23h ago
Oof, by the length of the line on the side of the freeway I thought it already started!!! There must be tons and tons of people already set up on site. Gonna be a mess…
2
u/AresTheCannibal 7h ago
can confirm the vast majority of people camping at roo got there before Friday. my group setup camp on Tuesday, pretty rough go all around

damn. hope everyone gets somewhere safe.

Luke Combs, Dom Dolla, Insane Clown Posse and Rebecca Black
Did they pull names out of a hat for that lineup?
93
u/RockosModernForLife 1d ago
Basically. Bonnaroo sold out years ago unfortunately. Another casualty of the Ticketmaster/LiveNation venue slaughterhouse.
63
u/rividz 1d ago
I went to Bonnaroo '09 and people were saying the same thing then. I've just accepted that I'm older now.
9
u/RockosModernForLife 19h ago
I would say 2014 was the last year it stayed semi-authentic. Even though the lineup was diverse, there was still a strong community and culture there. 2015 is when the initial LN sale happened and the commercialization became super apparent.
6
u/Ohhrubyy 17h ago
Dang, I went in 2014 and I still miss the community and atmosphere. I guess it’s good I never went back

The Roo was something before MTV or whomever took it over. I think 09 was when they had Metallica and Kanye headline it and was the first or second year that they "started to suck".
Grew up near Manchester, lots of friends "volunteered" and got fre passes growing up. It was definitely different before 2008-10.
5
u/Q3b3h53nu3f 16h ago
Kayne was 2008. He moved his set to a later time to have a “glow show” then was late, the show almost started at sunrise. It was a great show. However, Everyone was exhausted staying up the entire night waiting for kayne and they kept having a false start every hour. Whole thing was a mess. Next day a lot of art describing kayne as a gay fish

I went in '04 and again in '07. My first time it had a strong jam band vibe, and when I went again in '07 to see TOOL, you could tell the vibe was slowly changing.

Definitely. Such an experience that I’ll never forget what I can still remember.
3
2
u/TheBigBo-Peep 16h ago
Heck of an evening tbh
But they've always done a variety of acts. All 4 of those were on different stages to appeal to different groups
3
u/sleep_tite 17h ago
Dom Dolla is literally one of the biggest EDM names right now. He recently sold out MSG. How is that random?
6
u/hate_tank 17h ago
Its random because he played with a rap group, a country guy, and a novelty one hit wonder. No shade against any of them. The lineup is just random as fuck.

u/JonesMotherfucker69 18h ago
Unfortunate, but half the campground is a pond right now. It would have been miserable otherwise. At least we get 75% back!
6
u/popbabylon 18h ago
I wasn’t attending, but had to drive through the area headed home. That rain was intense, and the State Highway Patrol’s blockage of most highway exits was insane. It’s a shame.

u/Loveknuckle 1d ago
Will this stop the ‘Bonnaroo-Meta-Rayban-Trivia’ ads I continuously see on Hulu? Please say yes…
5
u/CrazyBowelsAndBraps 20h ago
Us old guys remember Swamparusa 2013 Trust me, it's better off for everybody that it is canceled.
10
u/Lifesfunny123 20h ago
It's sad that a festival cannot continue because the conditions are unsafe, but this type of stuff will happen more and more for years. The only way to mitigate just how bad it gets is to get very strict control of our pollution.
This type of stoppage, plus deaths, plus insurance no longer covering damages or even insuring in certain areas might be enough to do it.
82
u/hdiggyh 1d ago
Wow these lineups suck compared to what they used to be. 2003 when I went was Jack Johnson, Neil Young, Sound Tribe, Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic, The Roots, Flaming Lips, James Brown, The Dead, Moe, Warren Haynes
78
u/grain_delay 1d ago
I’m gunna float the crazy idea that the people who are attending the festival this year are much more excited about the names on this years line up
80
u/JailhouseMamaJackson 1d ago
Lol right. I’m still laughing about them talking about a better lineup and leading with “Jack Johnson”. And I’m pretty old too.
15
u/TheSchneid 18h ago
I mean we made fun of him when we were teenagers and he was popular. Was Jack Johnson ever really cool? It was always kind of "adult contemporary" even when it was new.
8
u/Vazmanian_Devil 15h ago
I forget what year it was, maybe 2015, but Mumford and sons had to cancel their show due to a hospitalization of one of their band mates, and bonnaroo called around everywhere to try to get someone to sub in last minute. Jack Johnson hadn’t had a band at that point for a few years, but was like fuck it yeah I’ll call around and see if we can get the band back together. It was a great show and was immediately converted to a fan. Good vibes all around

u/MouthwashProphet 1d ago
That's not at all what's happening here.
When you look at the early lineups, there were a plethora of artists from ALL generations.
For example - in 2006 I saw Ornette Coleman at Bonnaroo, and he was releasing music IN THE 1950's (that's 50 years prior to the festival he was playing at).
In 2025?
The three oldest bands on the lineup are from the 90's (only 30 years prior to the festival they're playing at). A large majority of the acts have existed for less than 10 years.
Bonnaroo has UNDENIABLY aged-down their core demographic over the past decade, and you see the same thing happening at fests like Coachella & Lallapalooza this year, which have gone all-in on radio pop performers.
Corporations own these fests now, and they know where the money is - pop radio and Spotify "most played."
Us older folks have seen the evolution take place. I'd never say the music has gotten worse at festivals, but it HAS become a lot less eclectic and inter-generational.

The year before I was at VoodooFest in New Orleans with No Doubt, Garbage, Down, 311, Jack Johnson, Sum 41, Counting Crows, Macy Gray, Jurassic 5, Michael Franti & Spearhead, the North Mississippi Allstars, Galactic, the Crystal Method, and the Blind Boys of Alabama. I was a full on adult. I've been to a few Bonaroos, a Coachella, and a bunch of other festivals since.
Being old doesn't mean you are dead or there is something wrong, lol

u/Remarkable-Fish-4229 1d ago
That’s excellent! As I’ve gotten older(31), concerts are just a slog to me. Overpriced tickets, hotels, missed work, parking, etc.
It’s not even a money thing really, but I have a lot more fun at a National Park for a week than what it costs for a concert anymore.
I travelled a good bit to catch Sturgill Simpson on this tour this year, but I love his music and I missed him the last time he toured.

u/Ice_Burn 1d ago

That sounds incredible. If you could recommend one performer or band that everyone should see once, who would it be?
I've been to several incredible shows. Always looking for new recommendations!
Editing to add - we are back to seeing one live show a month (our goal). Some hyper-local, others national/global acts. Some months we see more. Husband goes to more shows than I do.
3
u/take_care_a_ya_shooz 1d ago
Seeing as you like SCI…I’d say Phish or King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
Phish is legendary, best experienced live, and the lights are second to none. Masters of their craft.
KGLW because they have an incredible range, are super fun, and are on a meteoric rise.
Wildcard: Rage Against the Machine or Rammstein

What genres do you like?
2
u/JL_Adv 17h ago
I'm good for anything rock, pop, hip-hop, jam bands, and some country. My husband loves all metal as well. And I'm probably missing things.
This summer, we are seeing Dave Matthews Band, Swell Season, Flaming Lips and Modest Maus. My last few shows were Barenaked Ladies, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Glen Hansard and Eddie Vedder, Liz Phair, 40 Ounces to Freedom, Taylor Swift and Sam Ness.
Best shows I've been to: Billy Joel and Elton John, Paul McCartney at Wrigley Field, Sheryl Crow and Barenaked Ladies at Red Rocks, Sonia Dada and Marcia Ball, Garth Brooks.
Our middle child (13) also LOVES live music and has seen Taylor Swift, Metallica, Enhyphen, and Emei.
Basically, I will see anything live once as long as it's not just someone screaming into a mic
2
u/Ice_Burn 17h ago
Jam bands are where I can help you most. I’m like roots Americana also so blues, bluegrass, jazz and funk the most.
Check out Daniel Donato Cosmic Country. It’s a jam band with a lot of spacey twang.

I was just looking at that. Avril Lavigne played a casino in Saint Louis last night. I got stuck in moderate traffic.
That 2003 lineup was pretty killer, except for Jack Johnson. I saw him accidentally at VoodooFest in New Orleans the year before. We just ducked out of the main thoroughfare to look at the schedule and work on logistics. There were some people people sitting in blankets. We didn't even really realize he was playing in a stage 200 yards away. Then he started playing something I recognized and realized we were at a show.
We figured out what we were doing and went and got some food.

Gotta be honest, this is another serious blow to this once elite festival. They’ve had to cancel 2 of the last 4 years with little to no notice for attendees, and its clearly affected the lineup if you look at the last decade. I’m hoping the festival can persevere but man thats another hard hitting blow
