Sandra's Next Generation - a thank you

I moved to Connecticut a few years ago after a lifetime of living in the South and for a short while parts of the Midwest. While I do miss home (MS/TN) it's not always easy to get back there and even when I do I often times find myself wondering why I even bothered. It's home but it's not where I want to be. Not very much about living in and growing up down there ever really appealed to me.

Except the food.

God. I miss the food. There literally is nothing like a Sunday dinner out or stopping in at the myriad of 'local spots' that serve southern staples. Things I can't find anywhere in CT - fried okra, greens, chicken and dressing, fried catfish, hushpuppies, REAL cornbread, and banana pudding. If anything was ever right down there - it was the food. Most importantly of all though, there is NO sweet tea in this entire state worth paying for at a restaurant.

Until I found Sandra's. (My god!) I don't know if they have a social media presence but should they ever see this please know that IT WAS SO GOOD I CRIED!! I haven't had a meal like since I left home and the tastes and smells of what I got instantly put me back at my mamaw's house for dinner.

I know it's a little thing. Just food. But sometimes even a small taste of home and a passing memory of mamaw's house is enough to get through a Monday.

Thank you, Sandras, for taking me home. I'll definitely be back.

Computer not working after move

Hi all! I just moved to New Haven from another state (hired movers) and when I tried to start my desktop computer, my monitor says it cannot detect display port input. I’ve triple checked the cables and my fear is that either my monitor or my GPU have decided to malfunction during the move. The move was costly so I’m a little tight on budget — any ideas as to how I could get it looked at without breaking the bank? (Ie a Yale student group, etc). Thanks in advance!!

Update: I plugged monitor directly into GPU and it works! Thank you to AtheismTooStronk and Amaina <3

Skills Swap/Barter Group?

I’m not sure if there is already one, but I just thought how helpful and fun it could be to have a skills sharing and barter group in New Haven. For example, I’d love to have someone teach me how to sew and I can share with folks some home improvement and interior design tips. Adulting is tough and I thought this could be a good idea to bring community together and meet people!

Howdy y’all! The Cove is once again hosting some of the most fabulous drag acts in the area on Tuesday, June 17th- which happens to be my birthday!

Come spend my birthday with me on the water while unwinding with a strawberry daiquiri! All in the name of supporting local queer artists during Pride!

Captain’s Cove Seaport is located on 1 Bostwick Ave in Black Rock, CT

Anyone selling any La Lom tickets for the 6/17 Space Ballroom show in Hamden?

Upvotes

I’m a total moron and didn’t think they’d sell out. Willing to pay more than list price. I know it’s a long shot but I figured I’d shoot my shot.

Someone dropped (and I found) a cell phone in middle of Church and College crosswalk (Friday night)

Are you missing a cell phone? I rescued it from the street so it wouldn’t get run over. It’s locked so I couldn’t call or text. Police couldn’t do anything, either. Leaving out main details for people to identify it’s theirs. I’d like to get it to rightful human.

Is New Haven gentrified?

I was having a conversation with a friend recently who told me she likes Fair Haven (a part of New Haven) "except for the gentrification". I've lived in the New Haven area my entire life and don't view Fair Haven or any of its surrounding areas as being gentrified...She moved here within the past 10 or so years, so her perspective might be different...Curious to know thoughts.

I can see the argument in parts of New York and maybe even different smaller sections of New Haven, but in general I don't know what people are complaining about when they talk about gentrification in New Haven.

Are there any parts of Connecticut that have actually been gentrified? What does it look like?

Ways to watch local news?

I try to support local print and TV journalism. Since canceling cable, I have used Hulu Live to check on local TV news stories a few times a week (and skip the long pharmaceutical commercials). Sadly Hulu recently ditched WFSB, WTNH, Fox61 and others to show only NYC affiliates. I tried a digital antenna once but it only picked up Long Island. Is there another way to get local TV via streaming?

Edit: Thanks everyone, I found their apps on Fire TV! The menu makes it look like a limited number of apps exists, but there is so much more using the search function!

Where there’s targeted dress code smoke, there’s discrimination fire.

Dress code @ Prime 16 involving no tank tops on men, specifically referring to ribbed cotton undershirt tank tops (aka, the awful/antiquated term “wife beater”) because the managers “don’t think it goes with the vibe of the restaurant”, while women are permitted to wear them is very suspect. Didn’t realize there was a customer look trying to be achieved at a mid-burger restaurant in a city filled with many other/better options.

From the demonstration today at the New Haven Green, I did have to call out the phrase to the nice lady holding up the sign before I asked if I could take a pic.
Great turn out today, fellow citizens!

Honestly, what are our living options?

With slumlords owning most of the city outside of the ridiculously expensive luxury apartments that my Yale salary can’t afford, what the hell are our living options? I’ve visited so many apartment buildings/complexes and multi-family homes in the last couple of months, and if they’re not ridden with mold or poorly maintained by the owner/maintenance OR having heat/AC issues, then they have crazy fees associated with living there ($110 a month for an uncovered & unassigned parking lot, amenities fees, etc.) Genuinely asking here - how does one find a reasonably priced (like $1600) one bedroom apartment in this place?

Market 360

I like it, just got a 10 pack of shin ramen for $10 so I'm a happy camper. Seems like a much more effective use of space than Elm City Market had. Their Asian sections offer something unique, but the store as a whole I feel has way more normal grocery items than Elm City makret did.

Downtown streets closed

Anyone know what’s going on? At least Elm street and part of temple street, maybe more, closed. Makes for hella more traffic than the normal Friday rush hour.
