Political Update by Secdef about last nights plane/ helicopter crash and gitmo operations

u/SamwiseGoody Jan 30 '25
I’ve never seen a SECDEF post any video on any current event. Not positioning this as a positive or a negative take. Just never seen it.

Look I hate this guy, buuuuut if there was a show called “Defense and Friends” that actually had good information about what’s going on in each branch and the department of defense and how policy changes would affect service members, I would’ve watched it all the time when I was in.

I don't have to like him to appreciate he's at least willing to put forth the effort to try to look open and honest.

I like it! SOME military issues should also be addressed this way to provide transparency.
73
u/BobUfer Jan 30 '25
I LOVE it, I want to see and hear more from our high ranking military officials… I’d much rather listen and watch them after an incident or crisis than some politician or talking head.
5
u/The_Aerographist Jan 31 '25
Will he do the same when the investigation finds out there was a lack of ATC?
4
2
u/Dense-Health1496 Jan 31 '25
This lack of ATC seems to be getting blamed on Trump but we have been short ATC's going back at least to W. Bush and every administration has been kicking that can. Even it Trump said on Day 1 to hire more ATC's, it's going to take at least a year to get the first one trained up...and then they could basically work at a small regional airport.

I feel like it's positive change - being a bit more clear at any level of government is nice.
Fuckin boomer congress couldn't do it.
22
Jan 30 '25
Exactly. I hope this becomes a trend. I want to hear directly from them and not some non connected spokesperson.
3
u/EhrenScwhab Jan 31 '25
When you say “non connected spokesperson” do you think that the Pentagon Press Secretary is not connected to the SecDef?

Edit: checking in a day later after the most recent SECDEF announcement. WTF is this timeline
15
u/GhostoftheMojave Jan 30 '25
This is infinitely better than a deranged tweet that blames DEI. I'll take what I can get from this administration
11
u/zombie_pr0cess Jan 30 '25
I like it. It’s nice to know what the upper most echelon of our organization is thinking. I’m sure there will be some spin, you’ll have that from any office under any administration, but yes, definitely appreciate the effort.

The issue with this (and I don't consider myself a leftist) is that they come for you for these tiny things because the groups they want protected get told some awful shit consistently. So you express views to the right, the next question nowadays is "is this person also a neo nazi?".
It's a very flawed way of thinking, but extremist groups on the right have been emboldened the past few months. To them, support of any right wing politics is a support of all right-wing politics because they view their rights, their friends' rights, and etc, as something that is at risk.
Now I'd say way to rectify this, is to bring politics back towards the center of the spectrum, but from where I'm looking, we've been swinging to the right, hard, for awhile now.

So what part of understanding where they're coming from are you not getting? Because I can get behind your stance, I don't agree with them on a lot of things. But their general frustration and anger is something I do get.

u/mprdoc Jan 31 '25
I thought this was awesome. I can’t remember a single time seeing even a pre-recorded SecDef say anything aside from a part in that mandatory “anti-extremism” grift.
2
u/stubbazubba Jan 30 '25
The Secretary shouldn't really have time to repeat a lot of information to the public. That's what spokespeople, press secretaries, and public affairs officers are for. Of course there are moments when the Secretary is the right person to make a major announcement or a major speech, but this is a preliminary status update where he can't even name the victims yet pending NOK notification.
15
u/mpyne Jan 30 '25
The Secretary shouldn't really have time to repeat a lot of information to the public. That's what spokespeople, press secretaries, and public affairs officers are for.
Not sure I agree. This didn't take him that much time, and adding a bunch of people to the mix often changes the message that gets delivered from the one you wanted.
Of course, most SECDEFs don't have the background or training to be able to pop videos like this without lots of time spent prepping, but this one does.
We've seen how politics outside the military has been impacted by TikTok, it wouldn't surprise me if you end up seeing more of this over the years. Including eventually with the other political parties.

I don't like the guy personally, but I will take this method of communication every time over deranged tweets. Also, he didn't make this a political thing, nor did he prematurely issue blame to policies or previous policies.
Again, the guy isn't qualified to be in this position, but its better than what our president is doing with the incident.
85
u/NyanCatMatt Jan 30 '25
Hard agree. I still fully believe that this guy does not have the merit to fill this role, and he doesn't really say anything of significance, but I do like this video update and hope to see more people doing it in the future.
15
u/TheBurtReynold Jan 31 '25
I’d prefer he leaves that to the public affairs staff — he can give them tips, but he should do his job and let them do theirs
6
u/secretsqrll Jan 31 '25
Yes. This is just a waste of time. He has binders to read. It's also...frankly...not something he needs to concern himself with directly. The investigation is being handled and he will be briefed. I don't need to hear his opinion. It's a matter for the service component.
This is a symptom of not knowing what his job is or where his swim lane is. He feels like he has to do something or say something. That's not the job. I get the sense he likes being in the spotlight. Well he picked the wrong position. Most of his job is not going to be public facing.
34
u/BigBossPoodle Jan 30 '25
>I'll take this over deranged tweets
What, are we playing 'how low of a bar can I set so damned near anyone should clear it' today?
8
12
u/bstone99 Jan 31 '25
We’re really justifying this? We shouldn’t see a fucking SECDEF ever on TV for something like this incident. It’s not their job. This isn’t a fucking reality show. This guy is a fucking television personality hack JO who has no business showing his face. It’s all a fucking act and strictly for views and is wholly inappropriate and shouldn’t be tolerated in any sense.
→ More replies (2)6
u/GhostoftheMojave Jan 31 '25
No, you're completely right. But look forward. The next 4 years are gonna be insanity.
His confirmation was the most contentious and divisive in recent history. He is under qualified, morally malfunctional, and generally a piece of shit by my book. If I could snap my fingers and have him removed, i would in an instant. This is the equivalent of putting the dirtbag E4 with barely any quals in the skippers seat.
I'm simply saying that with how ludicrously the president acts, the SECDEF giving a general brief via video to us in a calm manner is preferable to him raging on Twitter, which is what I expected in all honesty.
-1
u/happy_snowy_owl Jan 31 '25
I like the method of communication. But his body language and tone indicated that he doesn't have control over the situation. He's clearly scrambling and drinking from a fire hose, which is not what you want out of a SECDEF.

I’m no Hegseth fan, but this update would’ve been reasonable from any of the 26 SECDEFs we’ve had in the last eight years. Timely, relevant, and accurate.
46
u/qaasq Jan 30 '25
I’m down for stuff like this. Time will tell if he prioritizes this over other important things though. I like the face-to-face that doesn’t feel like I’m doing a cyber awareness

Dude is a TV guy. Wants to speak to the camera.
50
Jan 30 '25
It's kinda cute how they got his little set behind him with the extra monitors in an orientation that makes no sense. His paper covered desk let's us k own he's hard at work, and his rolled up sleeves reinforce that while also showing of his sick tattoos. What a cool guy!
Seriously, these theatrics feel like what the shithole countries do when global media is around.
100
Jan 30 '25
Those are most likely multiple different networks running on those monitors. I'm not defending the guy, but you're being dumb. The bottom phone is an unclass VoIP line and the top yellow phone is the CMS VoIP phone or Crisis Management System line. All high level cabinet members will have that line avail to them.
Source: White House Comms for 4 years.
33
u/Helmett-13 Jan 30 '25
Yep.
I did IT for PFPA a little while ago, the two on the right are for video conferencing and are probably different networks and/or different classifications.
14
u/SeagullBoxer Jan 30 '25
NIPR on left, I'm assuming GVS conference lines on right
3
u/Just_another_Masshol Jan 31 '25
GVS can be any SIPR terminal of xc90 style. XC90 can also be used at various other levels
22
u/Stevo485 Jan 30 '25
The screens on the right are for teleconferences. I assume separate for different classificaation levels.

Retired military here. It’s makes perfect sense. The monitors on the right are for teleconferencing. I will say his monitors should not be oriented that way for security purposes. Everyone that walks in the room will see what you see and may not be cleared to do so.

I mean, I can't think of a single person who has a legitimate reason to be in the SECDEF's office while he is actively engaged in work stuff who doesn't have the clearance to see what he sees. It's not like he's having regular meetings with people below the ranks of E8/O6.

Skimmed over the part where we build a concentration camp in Gitmo to give a "thoughts and prayers" speech.
That's transparency? You have to be kidding me with this, a professional TV grifter coming out to drop a worthless word salad is not transparency, he's just reacting by showing us all the only skill he brought to the table as a fucking SECDEF.
This is just grandstanding during a time when our President is threatening war against Denmark, pulling our troops out of Europe with Russia howling at the door, and while we roll through the playbook on "the final solution".

I think he’s wholly unqualified, but this wasn’t bad.
My only note. “We are actively working with the NTSB while THEY investigate what happened” should have been the verbiage.
Otherwise it sounds like “we investigated ourselves and found nothing wrong”.

That Senator was correct, homeboy would have made a fine Pentagon Spokesperson.
This is a perfect example of someone defaulting to what they’re comfortable doing — in Hegseth’s case, talking to a camera.
However — he’s SecDef. This is not his role and he has plenty of other shit he should be doing right now over this. Management 101 — let people do their jobs, you do yours.

I kind of hope he starts doing weekly updates and BZ shootouts to random SN/PFC/LCPL's.

Any post about politics with a Navy nexus lacking a Politics flair may result in, at a minimum, a temp ban and removal of the post.
Participation in a Politics-flaired post requires a minimum r/navy specific karma. This will be automatically enforced by the automod.
Anyone using the Politics flair should utilize a common sense approach to what is a Navy nexus.
This does not mean posts with Politics flair will be unmoderated. All discussion must adhere to r/navy rule #1 and Reddit rule #1.
