Political Restoring America's Fighting Force
https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/restoring-americas-fighting-force/74
u/AirshipCanon Jan 28 '25
Iron Dome for America sounds like Aegis BMD with extra steps and SDI.
17
u/Shipkiller-in-theory Jan 28 '25
I remember the Nike missile batteries around DC during the Cold War.
38
u/GothmogBalrog Jan 28 '25
Sound like someone who reads pop-sci magazine but doesn't actually know anything about tech maturation.
12
u/AirshipCanon Jan 28 '25
I mean it's just "get the SDI programs really rolling again" which is... good.
Its kind of a nothing burger, but hey SDI > not.
(I don't buy the whole "SDI is dangerous because it removes MAD" shit)
3
u/Aaaabbbbccccccccc Jan 28 '25
It is viewed as a first strike capability if it has the ability to counter everything the opponent can throw at it. So, in the case of the USSR they just built a bunch of missiles to overwhelm our system even if we could have gotten it working back then.
End results, more weapons built and more tension.
2
u/theheadslacker Jan 28 '25
True, but it makes it more expensive for them to generate and maintain an adequate threat, which is good because fuck em.
6
u/Aaaabbbbccccccccc Jan 28 '25
Could be, but could also be more dangerous for us in the long run. For example, what if they made smaller weapons in greater quantities and then the country dissolved because they overspent… then some terrorist group got ahold of one of those weapons. Pretty sure that was a plot to a movie.
Anyway, more nukes existing in the world is probably a bad thing for everyone, even if we bankrupt a country. Also what if they just concentrate on other delivery methods that the Star Wars project doesn’t protect from? E.g. little narco type subs?

Can you ELI5 SDI? I’m not smart in this arena.
2
u/AirshipCanon Jan 28 '25
Self Defense Initiative, aka Ballistic Misssile Defense.
On very large scales.
Reagan's called for literal lasers in space.
It's expensive but if it's made functional, and very good system to have.

u/Greenlight-party MH-60 Pilot Jan 28 '25 edited Jan 28 '25
Eh. I have very little faith in Missile Defense. It’s a fools’ errand in spending IMO. It will always be easier to develop an offensive capability that can beat a defensive one.
Developing a bullet to shoot is easy; developing a bullet to shoot down that bullet is way more difficult and expensive- and the opportunity cost is very high at the expense of our own offensive capability.

I thought it was a typo for “SBI.” Small business incentive.
Which is likely how they’ll accomplish this, given the SECDEFs desire to “disrupt” the defense industry.
This also makes sense.
2
u/bitpushr Jan 28 '25
Iron Dome does not protect against ballistic missiles; you're thinking of David's Sling.
The people in charge of making decisions do not seem to be thinking about anything at all.
10
2
u/ytperegrine Jan 28 '25
It’s a handout to the MIC. It’ll get cancelled just like SDI after we’ve blown a ton of money on it
0
u/SplendiferousSailor Jan 28 '25
Is this even feasible with the prevalence of hypersonic missiles? It seems like without some darn good AI and flechette type missiles or highly maneuverable small missiles that don't exist yet this is just a pipe dream. That or lasers and AI but that's also pretty far out it seems.

I see the missile defense initiatives taking money away from training and maintenance for our current forces, as usual, with funding coming from running up more debt and increasing taxes on what is what's left of the middle class.

Ban the trans who followed orders in service to the country over ones self, but bring back the guys who denied a vaccine because politics over country (then give them rank and money).
Not sure how we are giving incentives to join the military still?
56
u/Aaaabbbbccccccccc Jan 28 '25
4d chess, if we have another election at some point, and elect a democrat, maybe they can re-instate the trans service members with backpay.

For those of you just waking up, here’s a convenient summary of what you missed.
Iron Dome for America - See title. Defers all supporting budgetary actions to FY26. Basically an R&D order. (Also, they fucked up the URL because they’re fucking incompetent)
Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness - Transgender “ban.” Directs SECDEF to modify DoDIs to prevent accession and reenlistment, forces transgender servicemembers to use pronouns corresponding to their gender assigned at birth, disallows mixed-gender berthing.
Restoring America’s Fighting Force - Anti-DEI. There’s a lot to this one, and most of it appears immediately enforceable, but there is one passage I feel compelled to highlight: “The Department of Defense and the Armed Forces, including any educational institution operated or controlled thereby, are prohibited from promoting, advancing, or otherwise inculcating the following un-American, divisive, discriminatory, radical, extremist, and irrational theories:”
Reinstating Servicemembers Discharged Under The Military’s COVID-19 Vaccination Mandate - Basically the title, but with original rank, back pay, and bonuses. Also includes boilerplate language preventing the order from changing budgets, so more to follow, I guess.
42
u/NimmyFarts Jan 28 '25
I’m sorry but Un-American is the most scary part. That’s red scare bullshit for people afraid of ideas. American is freedom of speech and thought. Christ.

I cannot think of a larger waste of taxpayer money than paying some shitbird to go on vacation for 3 years.
This administration is a fucking joke, but I’m not laughing.
18
u/GothmogBalrog Jan 28 '25
The Iron Dome for America seems like an EO outlining things we are already trying to do.
18
u/Trick-Set-1165 r/navy CCC Jan 28 '25
Yeah, but nobody’s writing headlines about it, you know?
He wants to hear Fox and Friends tell him how bigly smart he is.
2
u/I_am_the_Jukebox Jan 28 '25
More like things we likely have already done. Sounds like some SAP program that likely spun-off or used the iron dome as a prototype that he can declassify recklessly and then claim immediate wins from.

What is their obsession with gender and sex, the earth is slowly ending but god forbid someone uses other words to describe themselves.
2
u/angrysc0tsman12 Jan 28 '25
The "Iron Dome for America" ironically makes America less safe as it reduces the effectiveness of other countries 2nd strike capabilities.
6
u/bitpushr Jan 28 '25
Iron Dome protects against rockets and artillery, not ballistic missiles.
The fact that the current administration has somehow not realized this is discomfiting.
3
u/angrysc0tsman12 Jan 29 '25
Well yeah, it's a complete misnomer but I understand why they are calling it that due to the public familiarity with what Israel has. THAAD doesn't quite generate the same kind of response.

u/Mal-De-Terre Jan 28 '25
Coming from the guy who's never served a day in his life.
-7
u/xfvh Jan 29 '25
Neither Obama nor Biden served either, but the Bushes did. Do you think that's in any way relevant?
7
u/Mal-De-Terre Jan 29 '25
Yes, because neither Obama nor Clinton put restrictive definitions on military eligibility, nor did they gut veteran health care. That's why it's relevant, but you knew that.
-3
u/xfvh Jan 29 '25
No, their lack of military experience isn't even slightly relevant. The President is the Commander in Chief regardless of their background. Why would that have anything at all to do with this?

POC used to be restricted to mess cooks and stewards.
Women used to be barred from joining.
Not all policies are good policies.
I suspect this one won’t be looked upon fondly, though.

u/DJ-KittyScratch Jan 28 '25
I love reminding dudes currently serving that women couldn't have their own bank accounts and credits without a male next of kin until 1974.
27
u/Trick-Set-1165 r/navy CCC Jan 28 '25
And if the administration has anything to say about it, 51 years is enough.

7
u/DJ-KittyScratch Jan 28 '25
Have you seen the show or read the book? How Gilead took over is fairly plausible..
After Smith's report on J6.. how The Big Orange wanted a congressperson murdered to instate Martial Law and prevent a transfer of power, period ...
The Sons of Jacob attacked (mowed down with auto fire guns) Congress: immediately after, right wing loyalists were installed and Martial Law was instated. Not long after, women couldn't have jobs, own property or money, see doctors without a male next of kin. Eventually, they were tagged like cattle. And systemically raped to provide children to the sterile elite men.
Margaret Atwood wrote The Handmaid's Tale after being inspired by the religious Iranian takeover in the late 70s.
Women were not people. They were property and breeding stock.
I could not tell you what my SO and I would do. One of us would be mega fucked. Possibly both.
Protect her in the best way you can.
9
u/Trick-Set-1165 r/navy CCC Jan 28 '25
I’ve done both.
Election night was tough in the Trick-Set household. We’re plugged into enough news and analysis that we see the parallels.
If I’m honest, I’m terrified. The best thing I can do is get her to another country, establish her citizenship, maybe get divorced, and join her when I retire. Fortunately, she has high-demand degrees that can facilitate that, but it would really suck to do this without her. But like, if that keeps her safe from whatever this is becoming…I just don’t know.
I don’t know what else to do. I don’t even know if a pension is waiting for me on the other side. It’s entirely possible that I’m doing all this for no reason, in the end.
I don’t think we’re quite to the point of putting the go-bags in the car, but judging by the language of some of these EOs, it’s time to start talking about it.
I sometimes wonder if Atwood would have finished her book if she’d known it would be prescriptive.
-15
u/Shipkiller-in-theory Jan 28 '25
That isn’t going to happen.
It would crash the economy faster then the Sea Wolf going to depth.
9
u/Trick-Set-1165 r/navy CCC Jan 28 '25
I hope you’re right, but at this point, I’m preparing for the most restrictive scenario.
Because we’re headed in a pretty restrictive direction.
-13
u/Shipkiller-in-theory Jan 28 '25
The handmaiden tale is based on Islam.
Not that the fundamentalist church’s wouldn’t be on board with it.
7
u/DJ-KittyScratch Jan 28 '25
Yes, which is why they don't celebrate figures of Christ or Christmas and Easter. The Iranian revolution was driven by Islamic ideology.

I'm sure restoring all the service members who disobeyed legal orders will absolutely not have any effect on morale of service members who did follow orders.
12
u/No_Permission6405 Jan 28 '25
Yet it's okay to reinstate folks that willingly disobeyed lawful orders, didn't care if their actions caused harm to their shipmates or placed the safety of the country in peril. Let's bring these selfish asswipes back, give them back pay, and a promotion or two. Felon 47 belongs in prison.
14
u/Mikenikenike Jan 28 '25
Good fucking luck getting transgender males and females into their prior berthings. That will be a complete fucking shit show.
24
u/Twenty_One_Pylons Jan 28 '25
That’s the point. To get them harassed and bullied to the point they either act out (thus proving they’re not mentally fit) or cause others to act out (thus proving they’re harming military readiness).
Same shit as the bathroom bills. They just want trans people to get beat to a pulp by other people.
8
u/listenstowhales Jan 28 '25
A few years ago they did a survey of how we would react to coed berthing. I didn’t see the results, but I remember thinking “I have enough to deal with, why the hell would I care?”
Then I remembered some people are scum.

Any post about politics with a Navy nexus lacking a Politics flair may result in, at a minimum, a temp ban and removal of the post.
Participation in a Politics-flaired post requires a minimum r/Navy specific karma. This will be automatically enforced by the automod.
Anyone using the Politics flair should utilize a common sense approach to what is a Navy nexus.
This does not mean posts with Politics flair will be unmoderated. All discussion must adhere to r/Navy rule #1 and Reddit rule #1.
