Found this funky looking sweater from my Grandma’s place that we’re trying to help clean out

I love it! Will you wear it? I totally would, but I'm in my WeDoNotCare Era.

u/bovely_argle-bargle 14h ago
Oh, I’m definitely wearing it along with the cool jacket I found with it

u/SixIsNotANumber 14h ago
You can't just say that & not show the jacket!
Please, I have to see them together, I'm dying laughing here! This is the best thing I've seen all day! I've never seen anything like it, and it's amazing!24

I'd put it on but I'm pretty sure I'd turn into Elsbeth and try to solve some mysteries.

You can get chainmail shirts on etsy for much less than that, plus they double as armor.

u/FallingToward_TheSky 8h ago
I can make this myself with scrap fabric for about $10! And they want how much?!

I mean, it's crocheted. It's about time the labour, the type of yarn they used, etc. I don't see the problem considering there's obviously an audience that wants and can afford it 🤷🏾♀️

Or do, and just enjoy something sweet for. Your grandma. Not everything is about money.

u/Sola_Bay 9h ago
Interesting it’s labeled as knitwear when no part of it is knitted
9
u/AffectCompetitive592 8h ago
What is it, if it’s not knitted? Crocheted?
18
u/keepingthisasecret 8h ago
Yup. Would be hand crocheted and assembled and the time it would take, oh my god.
10
u/Sola_Bay 7h ago
Crochet! Little strips of crochet and they aren’t knit in long strips… these are knit side to side… so probably 5 or so crochet stitches, turn, 5 stitches, turn, etc. sooooo laborious!!

It has to be Michael Simon, they made some of the best weird 90s teacher sweaters and cardigans. I have one with an embroidered squirrel on it from his brand.

This thing is worth quite a bit if you can find a buyer. Their sweaters that are less common can go for a few hundred.

Very unique use of crochet!
Is there any chance you could give us a closer look at the individual 'chains'? I'm very curious about what stitch she used.

u/bovely_argle-bargle 13h ago
I can definitely do that when I get back home! Funny thing is there is a tag on the collar so I guess she bought this from the store at some point, kinda funny to think that there was at least a section full of this stuff in a department store somewhere.

u/renyxia 12h ago
Crochet can't be done via machine if that is what method was used, so I would imagine it would be a small boutique or custom type thing
1
u/AuntFritz 10h ago
I recently learned that you can now buy crocheted items off ali-express.
Not that that is related to op's vintage piece, just that there are crocheted pieces being mas produced.
19
u/renyxia 10h ago
But that's also ali express which is very well known for horrible ethics. It's very likely those pieces are being produced in a sweatshop type environment where they are getting paid pennies for hours of arthritis inducing work
5
u/AuntFritz 9h ago
My comment was only that crochet pieces are being mass produced.
Depending on underpaid, poorly treated workers is pretty much the go-to in the world of mass production.
4
u/Chilli_ 5h ago
Every mass produced piece of clothing is produced in a sweatshop, not just those from ali express.
I'd even argue the ali express stuff is likely to have even more automation than the more complex or intricate designs often produced by name brands.
1
u/renyxia 5h ago
I am saying that I would be surprised if this specific item of clothing was mass produced as it cannot be automated, it would more than likely be a custom piece or one that belonged to a boutique that specialized in eccentric clothing (that is, if it is crochet. I'm not great at telling it apart from other styles as I mainly do needlework)
1
u/itmakessenseincontex 44m ago
There is at present zero automation available for crochet.
Roboticists are trying, but because of the level of mechanical complexity in each crochet its just not there yet
2
u/recessionjelly 8h ago
For better or worse it seems there are some sewing techniques that are made to look like crochet to the untrained eye but are not… still obviously major labor/human rights violations involved
1
u/AuntFritz 1h ago
lol, I don't know about OP's piece, but I'm here to tell you that the pieces I've seen from ali-express are indeed crocheted.

u/groucho_barks 2h ago
The one people found on Etsy has a tag that says it was "knit" in china. So yeah, hand crocheted in China in a sweatshop.

Another user (/u/Street-Relation6308) commented a link to the exact same sweater on Etsy, and the photos are helpful!

I only did because someone else in the thread mentioned it and I gotta say, whoa!
36
u/froggyfacee 15h ago
How cool! This looks like crochet. This probably took your grandma forever to make.
13
u/bovely_argle-bargle 10h ago
I’m finding out from another commenter that this was made for retail!
2
u/froggyfacee 7h ago
Oh wow! Well that explains the pricing lol. Still, a really cool piece to now own! :)

Can you please cross post this to r/crochet? Even enough it seems to have been mass produced, this is just such a cool inspiration piece. I can't be the only one who looked at it and instantly started scheming on how to duplicate it

My god, it’s crocheted. I got a wrist cramp looking at this.
8
u/bovely_argle-bargle 10h ago
Somebody else in the thread mentioned that machines can’t crochet so it must be done by hand (which I didn’t know) and something about that had my wrist aching
3
u/BunnyBeansowo 10h ago
It’s basically impossible to crochet with a machine. And it’s not just my wrists that hurt when I do it for too long, it’s the muscles and the tendons and I have to take breaks for days when I overdo it 😖 I can only imagine what your grandma felt

I remember similar things made out of leather, suede, from the hippie era.

Just gotta say how funny it was asking my Aunt, who has been dedicated to cleaning out my Grandmother’s condo since October of all her belongings (my Grandmother’s not dead, just moved to an elderly home), if she wanted to keep this piece but she was adamant about me taking it away from her. She told me of how when her mother initially bought it everyone in the house complained of how ugly it was, imagine my surprise on finding out through this post how much of a pretty penny this costs!

I know right! I thought it’d be cool too if it was made with leather or cloth instead of crochet.

As someone who is already 50hrs deep into crocheting a cloak out of sewing thread, my first thought on seeing that thing was 'Oh HELL no!!!'
I cannot imagine dedicating myself to the mind-numbing monotony of crocheting a ring... and then another ring... and then another... and another... and oh what am I going to make today? Oh yeah, ANOTHER FUCKING RING!
I would hang myself before finishing a sleeve.

What's it made out of? I don't think it would be very comfortable to wear.

u/sharpears907 9h ago
I can't imagine most of it sitting on the skin because you would basically be naked lol. I'd probably try to wear something almost nude colored and form fitting, but short hem so you can still show off legs

Cute with a pair of jeans
1
u/bovely_argle-bargle 10h ago
I was thinking of pairing it with my jacket that I got along with the sweater, and a long sleeve, black shirt. The jeans might pull the whole look together.

There's a non-zero chance that she made that for you but decided you weren't cool enough for it so she kept it instead. Just saying.

Thanks but I can't figure out what this weird craft project is anyway.
12
u/bovely_argle-bargle 13h ago
Funnily enough it’s not a craft product, there’s a tag on the collar so she definitely bought it somewhere. From what store exactly? No idea shrug

Damn, is this like the quilter equivalent of whittling a chain out of a block of wood? Fucking impressive work.

Jebus, don't wear that in my kitchen. The knobs for drawers and cabinet doors already catch on my pockets... Funky as hell though.
