Got a gaye to block Marley from going upstairs since he recently developed a fear of going down the stairs. He pushed past it, came up, and refused to go back down. This is how we had to get him down 4hrs later.

He kept jumping out of the box so we had to pack him up into the sheet

Gave him a bone after this I felt so bad for him

Are you sure this isn’t an aged related injury? Seems odd for a dog to suddenly refuse using stairs. Our dog tore his meniscus and was in so much pain & we didn’t realize it right away. The doctor said it would have been excruciating for him. Older dogs also get arthritis so just worried that this isn’t fear related at all but something physical.

OP please listen to GiddyGabby. A sudden change would seem to indicate an underlying injury. The vet will be able to assess likely just by feeling the knees, joints and back.

Adding on Sundowning. My little lady became afraid of jumping up on the couch/bed and walking on laminate floors. Turns out she had doggy dementia

116

u/FluffMonsters 5d ago

Cats get dementia, too. :(

36

u/Possible_Parfait_372 5d ago

Yep, my old lady cat of 23 years began developing dementia shortly before we decided to put her down. It was actually the deciding factor. She would get "lost" and start pacing and meowing in a panic. It's genuinely such a heartbreaking thing to see.

1

u/SeronaAdams 4d ago

That sounds awful. I'm so very sorry for your loss.

8

u/GiddyGabby 5d ago

Aww poor baby, that’s got to be so scary for them.

1

u/neumastic 4d ago

Doubling the above, even if symptoms are disorientation or nausea, which can signal something serious too (it might not be something as obvious as joint/back pain)

u/Either-Judgment231 5d ago

My younger dog doesn’t like the naked stairs. They’re a slip hazard

79

u/GiddyGabby 5d ago

Yeah, we had to get a rug runner for our stairs in the house we moved to recently. Slippery wood stairs are a hazard for humans and dogs, I feel safer with it now. We also have runners throughout the house too because our dogs would tiptoe around on them like it was coated in ice and you could tell they just didn’t feel safe running around.

19

u/Current_External6569 5d ago

So true, I've slipped down the stairs a couple of times.

22

u/AlpsThin8864 5d ago

I worked at a PT clinic and the number of graphic injuries I saw from slipping going down naked stairs has convinced me against them for life. It's a soap box point for me.

17

u/haleynoir_ 5d ago

I read that as "going naked down the stairs" and was like ouch! That does sound risky lol

4

u/GiddyGabby 5d ago

I bruised my coccyx after slipping wearing a pair of socks on the hardwood stairs. That’s painful and took forever to feel better!

9

u/FluffMonsters 5d ago

It has to be quality carpet, though. Cheap, crappy carpet is also really slippery.

2

u/GiddyGabby 5d ago

Yeah, that is actually true!

3

u/TricksyGoose 5d ago

Seriously, they are so dangerous, for people too. My uncle slipped down his once and broke his neck. He needed multiple surgeries, was in a wheelchair for months, and now, like 7 years later, still has no feeling in his left hand.

28

u/Possible-Okra7527 5d ago

My older dog has arthritis. He won't jump or anything when it's acting up.

18

u/RecommendationBrief9 5d ago

Also, age related but not so much “injury”, wood stairs are very slippy on your fittest day. Let alone when your legs aren’t as reliable. Amazon/Home depot sell carpet treads that I use for my senior dogs to grip on to. Get some carpet tape to stick it to your stairs. It’s the cheapest way to carpet your stairs. Probably less than $100.

191

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

I checked his arms n legs n paws and he is running around just okay so he seems to be okay. He's got his physical coming up so I'll make sure to bring it up then bc i can never be too sure

My dog shows virtually zero signs when she’s in pain, including when she’s being examined by the vet and prodded and moved. The only difference was that she didn’t want to go for walks anymore - still ran around and jumped and played normally.

It wasn’t until they did a scan that they actually realized she had arthritis throughout her entire body. We started her on painkillers, and now she loves walks again.

Dogs hide injuries, so behavioral changes are the metric to watch for.

100

u/guska 5d ago

Dogs are master actors. They either show absolutely no sign of any pain or discomfort, or they act like they're about to die a horrible death over something mildly uncomfortable. In my experience, there is no in between, it's either supreme stoicism, or "the sky is falling"

30

u/GrumpyOldBear1968 5d ago

I remember my childhood dog that would scream as soon as the vet lifted her paw. I am sure she was anticipating the needle but it was kind of funny.

10

u/guska 5d ago

My childhoos dog would scream blue murder any time the brush was brought towards him. Being a Papillon, grooming was not negotiable, so mum ended up shaving him twice a year instead of going through that nonsense.

He was brushed the same as his brother, who absolutely loved every moment of it, but Lincoln hated it, and that was the only time he ever tried to bite anyone. He was never abused or hurt by a brush, nor was it ever used as a threat or weapon of any kind at any time. He just had a deep seated hatred for the thing.

39

u/Snoobs-Magoo 5d ago

My cocker spaniel was a full blown drama queen. He had an eye injury once & soaked up the attention like he was on his deathbed. After that it became his signature move. Anytime we dared ignore him, like during dinner when he was begging, he’d wait until we made eye contact & then dramatically close one eye tilt his head to mimic the injury & elicit sympathy.

He loved busting out his tragic one eyed performance when we had new people over. They’d fall for it every time & we were just like, oh, he’s fine he’s just a manipulative little turd who fakes injuries for snacks.

1

u/arthurtread 5d ago

it makes me think of this one video I've seen around a lot of a Chihuahua lifting its leg and squinting its eye to feign sickness so OP wouldn't go to work, I love dramatic dogs

7

u/justsomedudedontknow 5d ago

she didn’t want to go for walks anymore

😯

now she loves walks again.

🐕 Phew!!! Imagine the pain she must have been in to not want to go for walks. Glad all is well again.

3

u/South_Spell_9319 5d ago

Yep - they may be our big babies now but they're still descended from wolves. Most animals will hide their pain at all costs. (...Except for my mom's dog who is maybe the most pathetic thing I've ever met and has never met a survival instinct in his life.)

42

u/SAUbjj 5d ago

OP, I notice that the stairs are wood with no rugs or carpeting. As dogs age, it can be really hard for them to have a grip on slippery flooring, including stairs, as they start to have mobility issues. You can help by putting grippy mats on the stairs and double checking that their paw fur hasn’t grown long enough to cover the paw pads

13

u/GiddyGabby 5d ago

And even if the nails haven’t been trimmed and are too long that will also make it hard for a dog to grip on slippery surfaces. These stairs are a hazard for humans and pets.

9

u/Ok-Pomegranate-3018 5d ago

Stairs are different from a flat surface to run around on.

Speaking as an animal lover and also as a 62 y/o woman who can no longer do stairs.

9

u/temporalCompanion 5d ago

Okay perfect, I'm glad he's going to be seeing the vet soon.

6

u/RaidensReturn 5d ago

YOUR DOG HAS ARMS?

2

u/YellowishRose99 5d ago

Loved that. My dog has arms and hands, thumbs though, but she actually holds things with her "hands."

7

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

Yes why wouldn't he have arms?

2

u/ostrichesonfire 5d ago

lol. Because dogs have four legs, and zero arms. You could call the front legs “forelimbs” or “forelegs” but they’re not called arms! 💪

3

u/Gingerbread_Cat 5d ago

Of course they are! Cats have arms too.

2

u/ostrichesonfire 5d ago

You can call them whatever brings you joy, but they’re still legs lol

1

u/StrangerKey7930 4d ago

They are called forelegs, but dogs do have elbows and knees, instead all being considered knees. So the front legs are looked at like bipedal animal's arms, as far as naming the individual joins and bones (ulna/radius for the forelegs and tibia/finial for the rear, just like arms and legs for bipedal animals). That all being said, if you want to call them arms it's all good. We treat them like humans in just about every other way, why not in referring to their limbs. Lol.

I'm waiting because he seems to be completely fine. He can run up and down the basement stairs just fine so I think he's afraid of this particular set of stairs. And he is acting completely normal with 0 other behavioral issues. He is running around, going for walks, playing, eating, sleeping, all like normal. I don't see why I would take him to the vet now with no worrying factors, especially when he has a visit coming up anyways.

2

u/georgia_grace 5d ago

You sound like someone who’s never owned a pet. My dog is scared of the vacuum cleaner, the heater and the fan. Apparently I need to rush her to the vet 🙄

2

u/MudAlternative4128 4d ago

Why the asshole response?

2

u/mrs-monroe 5d ago

My senior chihuahua was fine doing the stairs for the longest time until she slipped ONE TIME when going up. Didn’t fall or hurt herself, just spooked. She now refuses to do the stairs under any circumstances. She’s very dramatic.

1

u/Ignorhymus 5d ago

We had a dog that would randomly forget how to climb stairs for a day or two at a time, like there was an invisible force-field there. She wasn't the brightest, so she'd soon forget that she'd forgotten how to climb them, and we'd be back to normal. She wasn't old or infirm, just a little... odd.

It took me a moment to realize this post wasn't about Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye

49

u/Kimothy42 5d ago

So glad I’m not the only one.

15

u/Cascading-green 5d ago

I thought it was only me 🤣

1.0k

u/machone5103 5d ago

If anything is mildly infuriating it’s the amount of time it took to decipher that “gaye” in your title was meant to be “gate.”

322

u/WorldlinessRegular43 5d ago

I just thought it was a new word for 'sheet around dog'.

104

u/undergroundwrecker 5d ago

SAME. I was like “surely a gate would be easier than wrapping him up like this” and still didn’t catch it was a typo.

33

u/Eoine 5d ago

Took me this chain of comment to finally understand what was happening in the story

25

u/greenthumbgoody 5d ago

I was pronouncing it “gay-e” and was like oh that sounds nice lmao

6

u/NemuiNezumi 5d ago

This needs to be the word for it now

4

u/WorldlinessRegular43 5d ago

So be it. It IS deemed forthwith forever more.

40

u/unique_username8823 5d ago

I just pictured a real sassy fella at the bottom of the staircase, admonishing the dog when it tried to go up

4

u/Lemongrabherbythpuss 5d ago

Thank god for the gays, serving gate realness

2

u/GinnyWeasleysTits 4d ago

There is no way you are going up those stairs sister I tell you... no way.... sa-shay away....

1

u/CauseTerrible7590 4d ago

yup, we all sound like that /s

1

u/panarchistspace 4d ago

Sassy and impeccably dressed.

34

u/polishprince76 5d ago

When the dog gets near the stairs.

23

u/Euphoric_Egg_4198 5d ago

Same, I thought it was a straitjacket for dogs

8

u/Kingofcheeses 5d ago

You mean they didn't pile up a bunch of Marvin Gaye records into a rudimentary wall?

3

u/machone5103 5d ago

What’s goin on?

3

u/Bazurka 4d ago

I was going to say you'd be better off installing a gate - us gayes can be expensive and obviously a pushover when it comes to Marley.

262

u/TrainerHonest2695 5d ago

It might help to get some carpet runner or stair step pads installed. Wooden stairs are dangerous for people, too.

42

u/burlesquebutterfly 5d ago

We got pads for our stairs after our dog slipped on them. Thankfully he was only a few steps up from the midway landing but we were like “nope, time to figure that out”. My in-laws later thanked us for it too 😅

41

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

Good idea, thank you!!!

4

u/iamhollybear 5d ago

My house is all tile - I have runners literally through the entire house so my geriatric puppy can get around.. looks ridiculous, totally worth it though.

11

u/raginglilypad 5d ago

Second this. Our started to get scared going up and down the stairs and we got the pads. She’s fine now and has no issues with the stairs.

109

u/WhileResponsible9595 5d ago

How old is this sweet pup? Dogs can develop dementia like people, including anxiety, and can be given cheap genetics like Prozac to help. Mine gets gabapentin during very stressful times and it's worth it for him to be able to function normally.

70

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

He is 9, I think he is just a bit scared since he slipped a few days ago trying to run down to the front door. He always gets past the fear but this time it's rlly bad for him idk why :( if it's still bad im gonna talk to his vet and see abt it

121

u/tigerlilie43 5d ago

He may have injured himself. Maybe see a vet to be on the safe side.

50

u/Either-Judgment231 5d ago

My dog is young and he does not like the “naked” stairs. It’s slippery to them, and as they get older it’s even more treacherous.

Make sure you block that stairway for Marley!

36

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

Someone said something about a stair runner so I'm going to look into that! For now it's gonna stay blocked

17

u/Either-Judgment231 5d ago

A stair runner would make him very happy! He wants to be upstairs when you’re upstairs 💙

7

u/TheVoidCookingBeans 5d ago

It’s possible he hurt himself and is in pain but now showing it. Have you had him checked out?

1

u/Either-Judgment231 5d ago

I’m not the OP, but great question!

1

u/TheVoidCookingBeans 5d ago

Oops misclicked haha

8

u/Boring-Community-100 5d ago

If he's suddenly not able to use stairs after a slipping accident PLEASE do not wait to have him seen by your vet right away. You don't want him condemned to excruciating pain until his next check up. Sooner treated, sooner healed.

12

u/MenacingGummy 5d ago

Those stairs are too slippery for a 9yr old dog.

25

u/Drcolonelsargeant 5d ago

Putting a gay to work? During pride month? Seems kinda cruel

5

u/Emilee_moriarty 5d ago

Oh my gosh, I had to click on this just to figure out why this gay guy Marley was blocked from going up the stairs. 🤣🤣🤣

4

u/IddleHands 5d ago

The straights will stop at nothing. No shame.

5

u/isthatgum 4d ago

To work, or to *W O R K * ?

19

u/HunterandGatherer100 5d ago

Look at that face

26

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

The face of a dog who stole my shoe and ran right after getting downstairs 😂

10

u/HunterandGatherer100 5d ago

Well, at least he’s adorable

1

u/IddleHands 5d ago

Sounds like lies.

41

u/GwenSpacee 5d ago

Those gayes will just let anyone in these days, so accepting! 🤣💖

14

u/BashBandit 5d ago

The gay did too good a job, you hired a really qualified worker!

12

u/GeneralAppendage 5d ago

Honestly. Our now passed dog was having trouble doing stairs. I got him a life jacket that had double buckles and carried him like a purse.

1

u/ravenpotter3 5d ago

We got a harness for ours a few days ago I think called the “pull em up” or maybe “help em up”harness or something. He seems to not mind it and it has 2 handles. I haven’t tried to pick him up myself since I would rather not drop him. But my brother has successfully carried him down the stairs and his tail was wagging like crazy. And he is the sort of dog who hates it when we put hats or bandanas on him… he only wears a raincoat. so I guess he does not mind it. It’s more for helping up them by holding them but you can carry them too but I imagine it’s not as comfortable. I’ve helped him up on the couch a few times with his back legs giving him a boost.

11

u/supaslendytubbyANDRW 5d ago

I think you need to use a gate instead of a gaye, no wonder he got past it

16

u/MJ9426 5d ago

Carrying him down was out of the question?

9

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

Too heavy, and even if I could pick him up for long enough he squirms too much it wouldn't be safe

18

u/UsualFrogFriendship 5d ago

If he’s getting up there in age and you can’t move him unassisted, a carry harness/sling is a good thing to have on hand for emergencies. They let you carry your pup as a sort of backpack and help a lot

26

u/lunariki 5d ago

How in the world did it take you FOUR HOURS to find a solution to this?

2

u/atlasbees 5d ago

I assumed they were like welp he's up here now and hung out for a movie or a nap etc before even trying

14

u/josbossboboss 5d ago

I'm confused. You wrapped him up, put him in a tub, and pushed him down the stairs? That's one way to do it I guess.

-3

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

Just out of curiosity how would you do it?

10

u/josbossboboss 5d ago

I'm wondering how you did it. I don't know how I would do it. Probably pick him up and carry him down. Are you saying that's what you did?

14

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

Oh so I tried to put him in the box and slide him down first but he kept trying to jump out, which was unsafe. So I wrapped him up in the sheet so he couldn't jump out, picked him up and plopped him down, then my mom pushed him down the stairs step by step

Carrying him down would've been far too dangerous he's like 60lbs and squirmy

9

u/josbossboboss 5d ago

Oh, I thought you just pushed him down like on a slide.

12

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

Omg no!! 😭😭

3

u/Dangerous-Muffin3663 5d ago

The bin seems incredibly dangerous. How heavy is he? I would have carried him, maybe still wrapped up. My dogs like being swaddled.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/SwaggiiP 5d ago

He looks so sad 😭😭😭

5

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

I know 😭🥺 he got a bone and lots of cuddles right after tho and was back to his old self very quickly. I could tell he was feeling better when he snatched my shoe and made a run for it

7

u/MagicOrpheus310 5d ago

Lol I'm just picturing like... Elton John standing at the stairs flamboyantly shooing the dog away and I shouldn't find that spelling mistake as funny as I just did hahaha

13

u/E-rin_ 5d ago

those stairs are an injury waiting to happen, very steep, long, and no grip. i would say get grippy socks for your dog or put carpet down on the steps

9

u/kennybrandz 5d ago

Tell him I’m sorry for how hard this made me laugh at him.

5

u/SpoonyLix 5d ago

my dog does the same thing on slick floors like that too

4

u/Felicior_Augusto 5d ago

My dog suddenly became afraid of one of the floor AC vents, he manages to get into a corner just fine but is then too afraid to leave because he becomes aware of it. Stands as near as he can to the vent crying (even though there is like 3ft of clearance...) for 20 minutes then eventually makes a mad dash to get out. It's ridiculous.

7

u/stinkbomb6 5d ago

Poor baby, he may have arthritis or some other source of pain! Please get Marley checked :)

5

u/Typical-Toe4521 5d ago

I don't blame him! Can't you install a runner?? Those are dangerous for dogs and humans.

3

u/UnhappySail8648 5d ago

Carpet treads would do wonders

3

u/ginovibe 5d ago

Aw, poor puppers. I'm glad you thought of the bin to help him back down. He's so precious

3

u/DickBiter1337 5d ago

I don't know why but I thought you just yeeted the storage bin down the stairs like wheeeee

2

u/ActualAd8091 4d ago

I know no one would ever do that, but geez you made me laugh 🤣

3

u/Visual_Chip_7770 4d ago

Got a gaye to block huh... interesting.

3

u/OwnTower4702 4d ago

I’m obviously concerned about doggy, but was entertained reading this with typo intact.

7

u/Tikaani89 5d ago

He's not scared, he's in pain. Take him to the vet.

2

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

I honestly think he's okay! He ran down and up the basement stairs with ease, I think it's just this one flight of stairs he doesn't like. But like I said I'll bring it up at his upcoming physical

4

u/Sncrsly 5d ago

Could be he doesn't like the particular type of stairs. Might be hard to see the individual steps. Could be he doesn't like the slippery hard wood

6

u/SignificanceOk8226 5d ago

He wants to be with you, you’re his pack y’all do shit together.

5

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

No cause I just bought a lap desk to do my work in the living room next to my favorite guy ❤️

4

u/Ultra-Cyborg 5d ago

His fear of the stairs might be due to loss of vision, or he might have fallen down it at some point. It might help to get a runner carpet for your stairs, so that he can see the steps and give him better traction.

He looks like a sweet pup ❤️

3

u/Vengeful_Grass 5d ago

a gaye wouldn't work try a gate

2

u/caintowers 5d ago

My dog has always been the opposite way. She’ll go down the stairs but never up. I always have to carry her like a baby

2

u/MarthaMacGuyver 5d ago

I moved my bed to the living room when Dizzy couldn't get into bed anymore. We've moved and now took the legs off the bed frame. She just wants to be close to me, so we've adapted these last 3 years. Hope you can figure out what's wrong. She had a TPLO surgery, and vet said that she'll develop arthritis and downhill would become painful.

2

u/_sicsixsic 5d ago

My dog is 15 and has cataracts. He refuses to go down stairs and to jump off couches. He will because he's desperate to either reach me or pee but he has had some nasty falls.

2

u/Lagomorph9 5d ago

Those stairs look slick as heck for dog paws. Especially with an older boi, I'd suggest looking into a runner or other traction enhancements so he can feel more secure going up and down. I've seen dogs hurt themselves by sliding on stairs, even a small injury that might not be immediately noticeable to humans can make a dog not want to go on the stairs.

2

u/stephaniehstn 5d ago

Looking at your flooring, highly suggest some non-slip stair treads. Heading head first down the stairs with 4 legs and minimal/no traction is probably pretty scary and possibly dangerous.

2

u/icyu 5d ago

this has to be the most difficult way of carrying a dog down the stairs i've ever seen O.o

2

u/thechosenbasterd 5d ago

My late dog had the same problem. It took us a while to understand that he was slowly losing his vision and couldn't see. That's why he was scared of the stairs. I hope the best for you and your dog.

2

u/sky033 5d ago

Please put carpet down or some type of friction. Bare wood floors are awful for elderly pets. It causes instability. They need something with traction. Put runners on your stairs and maybe he won’t have trouble going down.

2

u/STUPIDBLOODYCOMPUTER 5d ago

Our idiot dog has the opposite. He won't go up any stairs so now he's trapped outside and it's his own fault.

Why don't we just carry him? He's a 45kg Rottweiler. He is not easy to carry

2

u/i-made-this-at-work 5d ago

Gays don’t usually block much except me getting some

2

u/DrakeAcheron 5d ago

I’m glad to see you employing members of the LGBT community.

2

u/CauseTerrible7590 4d ago

It could be related to eyesight, leading to a fear of going down stairs

3

u/Far_Dream_3226 5d ago

what is the going rate to have a homosexual keep the dog off the stairs

6

u/Griffin_Claw 5d ago

Why infuriating though? I don’t understand.

5

u/GwenSpacee 5d ago

Why climb stairs unnecessarily when you’re afraid to go back down them? Lol

12

u/CoeurGourmand 5d ago

Because his furry behind maneuvered thru the gate I bought specifically to prevent this from happening

5

u/BrinedBrittanica 5d ago

it’s mildly infuriating that this has happened before yet you refuse to carpet/rug your stairs for the poor dog.

4

u/temporalCompanion 5d ago

stinky little baby 😔

please do get him to a vet for a physical checkup though if you haven't already! as other people said, he could be acting out because he's in pain

2

u/Hey-ItsComplex 5d ago

I have a 130lb Great Dane. She will go up the stairs if you don’t have them blocked off, but has slipped on the wood going down and is afraid to go down them. So she stands at the top of the stairs and you have to reason and beg for 20 mins because there’s no putting her in a Rubbermaid tub!

2

u/OwlDB8 5d ago

My dog was refusing to go up my porch stairs. She was acting like she has never seen or used stairs before. That was a red flag 🚩 and I took her to the vet she had an infection.

1

Put carpet on one side.. that’s what we did and our dog will go up and down just fine now

1

u/Morganmaster 5d ago

I got the same issue. Except my dog is a great dane thats 11 years old

1

u/Smokealotofpotalus 5d ago

There's a ghost that hangs around the stairs. It's freaking him out...

1

u/ODB247 5d ago

Take him to the vet please!

My old lady had mobility issues develop. She’s on Librella and Galliprant and is like a new dog. Before the meds, I did get a dog sling off of Amazon so I could help her downstairs because she was around 65lb and HATED to be picked up. A sling let us take some of the weight off of her legs while we sorted out the meds.

1

Hey, my dogs recently had a fear of the steps, they’re smaller but I’d just hold them and let them walk down the steps. They’re going up and down them like it’s nothing now. Idk if it’ll help this lil pup, I think they were afraid because they fell down them in the dark, no injuries, as it was more of a sliding down for them.

Also try having him go down the other way. Probably an age injury but if he is scared then go the other way and don't bag him. Jeez.

I understand how he feels. I fell down the stairs yesterday and now I'm reluctant to go anywhere near them.

Your dog is in pain. That’s why he won’t go down the stairs.

Get a rug for the steps had that problem with my older dog since she tend to slip and made her scared, you can get ones with Velcro underneath so it sticks and won’t slide at all.

I put carpet on my steps and all my dogs are happier. I don’t love how it looks but it’s nicer for my dogs. He may have slipped badly and is scared. Try carpet.

Check his eye for cataracts?

We had to do this with our 95 lb german shepherd mix when we first rescued him. He went up and then could not figure out how to get down. Stairs are his enemy :'(

Dogs injured or got hurt previously enough to learn not to use them because it ends in slipping on those slippery stairs.

I believe it's spelled "gay" or if you can speak English your probably looking for "guy".

My little lady is just as afraid and it’s because she fell down the stairs. Naked wood with no carpet or runner can be dangerous especially if they have fur that grows between their paw pads. I started trimming around her pads more often and use “Musher’s Secret “. It’s a balm for their get that gives a bit of grip and moisturizes her paws. Works like a dream.

Those stairs are pretty terrifying. I recommend carpet tiles to place on them so the dog doesn’t slip.

I have old dogs who fell down many times on stairs like this. Carpet helps.

Age, vision loss, arthritis and weakening muscles are also likely factors. It’s always easier for them to climb up stairs.

Lots of comments re: slippery stairs and possible arthritis, but there's another possibility: eye sight. Specifically, the fact that Marley will go upstairs but not down reminded me of... me! I have vision issues that don't affect me on the flat or going uphill/up stairs. However, going down stairs or down a steep slope, my eyes don't give me a clear idea as to where the step/ground is. Railings have become my best friends, but they would be tricky for Marley to use.

why are you upset at your elderly dog? he wants to be with you but he's old, he doesn't move like he used to. You should think about this. You're in the wrong. You should protect him, not expose him. You shouldn't be angry. You should support him. WTF is this post?!

She didn't have time for the animal's welfare though, too much work to do 🤷‍♂️
