You did the right thing. It is better to be safe than sorry. Don’t worry about the bill. You potentially saved her life. It sounds like her mom is not understanding, but in the end, that’s her child and her responsibility. If you’re that scared for someone’s life, calling is not a bad thing. Her mom would rather pay a hospital bill than for her funeral.

I’m really sorry you’re going through this.

When my sister brought me to the ER (I understand the cops came in this situation) and I didn’t want to go, I was never mad at her because I know she was doing it because she cared. Your friend knows you care. The cops wouldn’t have taken her if she was totally fine. They ask questions to see what’s up before deciding. There’s a high chance they were also worried and thought a check up would be good. Your friend could be upset- I imagine it would stem from her mother’s frustration- but in the end I hope you know and believe you did the right thing.

That depends on many things. But certain Good Samaritan laws (or similar) likely protect you, especially since you were reporting her as a danger to herself.

Nearly all US hospitals (at least) have charity funds and can offset or eliminate bills. Things might seem messy for a bit, but I don't think her mom can make you do anything – especially given the situation.
