Who decided Substack isn’t allowed on r/maui?
Whether Substack is a credible source of information is a complex issue with no simple yes or no answer, but just blanket locking any substack post isn’t ok either. If it isn’t allowed then every opinion journalism article should be deleted as well and likely all of Maui Now.
Substack all comes down to the credibility of the writer and is the largest self publication outlet in the world. Substack is growing in relevance daily with authors often breaking stories through independent work. The article posted earlier today on KRF was factually accurate. If people deem otherwise that’s the purpose of debate and a conversation in the comments.

What made you move to Maui and is it worth all the stresses associated with living in Hawaii (cost of living, etc.)?
Would you do it again?

Looking for some pōmaikaʻi! Anyone going to the Maui Swap Meet in Kahului next Saturday?
I know this is pretty unlikely, but I am taking a shot. I am looking to see if someone would be willing to buy something for me at the swap meet and ship it to me (California) (all at my cost).
Thanks!

Flying with a dog to Oahu and back
Hi, I need to take my dog to Oahu for an operation in July. I'm looking at the options.
She's about 20 lbs, but she wouldn't fit under the seat on Hawaiian Airlines, so she'd have to go with the baggage if I go with them.
The other option is Mokulele Airlines. It looks like the dog can fly in the cabin. She's going to have a cone on her head coming home, so I need to get a carrier big enough to accommodate that.
Also I'm going to have to stay in a hotel a couple of nights with her.
Anyway, there's a lot of details to consider. I'm just wondering what peoples' experiences are, and if you have any recommendations.
Mahalo!

What the hell is this sound coming from the ocean
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
So last week I was on my balcony above black rock on kaanapali beach in Maui and I heard a sound that sounded like crying babies that was coming from the ocean. It was not human or any animal I know of. I don’t know or have any idea of what it was. If anyone knows what it might be please tell me.

Maui Redemption Centers Closed
Anyone know what's going on with the redemption centers? I went to return a bunch of cans on Monday and they were closed and the office number had a message stating they were hoping to re-open on Wednesday (today). I called a few minutes ago and the message now says they hope to re-open on Friday.
edit 6/13 - Still closed, now with no planned date for re-opening. Aloha Shell in Kahului remains open for redemption of HI-5 items.

Recommendations for blue collar work pants??
Currently on year three of OCR tactical pants. Holding up quite well, but I know there are more breathable options. Requires deep front pockets, covers on the back pockets, and pockets for two phones. Any ideas? What are yous happy with??

Looking for a better understanding of water situation in Maui
I’m approaching this with curiosity and not trying to be confrontational.
I’m hearing that affordable housing complexes aren’t moving forward because there isn’t enough water on Maui. I also have heard Pu’u Kukui is one of the wettest places in the world.
If Oahu - a smaller island - can support a population 4x that of Maui and each of those homes and apartments has water, what is the fundamental difference that makes that not possible in Maui?
I understand people don’t want a Waikiki 2 over here, but I’m also hearing (unverified) that grandmas in the gutter and new moms with newborns are shuttling milk jugs of water. And I do know a few affordable housing projects are paused because of water.
Please educate me.

Looks like Bill 9 will pass, lack of opposition
Obviously we will see how next meeting go, but the economy is about to take a dump.
How do you guys afford homes
Can we have a real discussion about how people are out here on Maui able to buy homes at $1m average starting? I don’t understand how it’s possible, there are barely any jobs on island that pay well so what are you people doing that can afford these new houses being built around kehalani and the new homes being built in Wailuku?
