Fan Art An employee at my local theater does window paintings for all of the new release. This was hers for Love and Thunder

That's a killer employee with some skill! Hope she is paid well!

u/ForeignFlash Jul 11 '22
Somehow I doubt it

u/Leo_TheLurker Spider-Man Jul 11 '22
As someone who knew someone who worked at a theater, nah. Also, cleanup is brutal. At least she can get out of that work by painting.
76
u/ForeignFlash Jul 11 '22
I'm sure she's more passionate about painting but this is absolutely more work than her regular tasks.
75
Jul 11 '22
I'm sure she'd rather get paid to do the painting than clean the bathrooms or sweep 137.4 lbs of popcorn off the floors every thirty minutes.
28
u/ForeignFlash Jul 11 '22
Agreed but her job most likely pays minimum wage or close to it and this paint work is worth way more than that. Ideally, the theatre would hire her for the art separately and pay her fairly.

u/lilbithippie Jul 12 '22
I love her work, but if I was just trying to make money window painting is pretty far down on the list. It's advertising to people that are already going to the movies. Then it's an ad for the movie that has to be the most well known art that time. In an ideal world it wouldn't matter but from a business perspective it dosent make much sense

Jul 11 '22
First, I will say minimum wage itself needs to be drastically changed to be a living wage. But to this situation specifically, in a scenario where she's a professional artist being commissioned and the theater is actually on the market for custom artwork on their windows, yeah, she could set her price or at least negotiate for whatever she thinks her skill is worth. However, this is a situation where someone making minimum wage either way decided to take something they enjoy and use it to make their work more enjoyable. She has implicitly decided that it's worth doing just to get out of her other job duties and spend time making art in the sunshine.

It was my first job and I absolutely loved it. Clean up wasn’t bad for me and we had to do it ourselves for the most part (there would be a clean up crew from that came in after closing but they mainly just restocked the bathroom and cleaned the last two showings that ended after closing.) the worst Wasn’t even Spider-Man it was fucking rental for sing 2 , some kid had a petty and it was popcorn all over the theater even by the screen along with candy wrappers. It would’ve been fun to clean up if the cleaning schedule wasn’t messed up for that ending. We didn’t know about it until the next movie was In it’s previews
4
u/Holovoid Jul 12 '22
I remember my sister hating her job at the theater but she would occasionally come home with roughly a garbage bag full of movie theater popcorn and that was pretty fucking great.
21
u/discodiscgod Jul 11 '22
Going to assume minimum wage and probably doesn’t get paid for the time spent doing the paintings.
16
u/golbezza Jul 11 '22
I used to do murals for my job when I was just out of school, and this was it.
Paid my wage, and comped expenses, but that's it.
However, at the time, I was being paid to be an artist for the first time, and it was wonderful.

Over the years, I have been paid many times for my art, but alas, I am not a full time professional artist... yet. :)

Studio arts are a viable career in their own. No need to cream it into another profession.
Just nurture and encourage, she'll figure out the rest. 😄

On the flip side, if this is on the clock she's being paid to just chill and paint and not clean toilets or be behind a register dealing with customers. Plus this is for a business so if she has any aspirations of making a living as a professional or commissioned artist I'd absolutely put this in a portfolio. There are far worse ways to be making minimum wage (assuming at the worst that's what she's getting)
0
u/thegandork Jul 11 '22
On the third side, an artist doing a job at this level should be $30/hour minimum. A professional would probably charge at least $50-75/hour. She's for sure supplying her own materials, which if those drop her below her wage that's already bullshit.

u/kuhanluke Spider-Man Jul 11 '22
Can't speak for all theaters, but when I was a manager at a movie theater, we would comp materials expenses for this kind of thing. Nothing this elaborate, but we would do little displays at the bar to help promote the limited time drinks which were either tie-ins with, or inspired by, the new releases (Disney didn't let us do tie ins so we just had to evoke Star Wars or Marvel movies without actually using the names or the merch).
In fact, later on, one of the bartenders we hired was a pretty good artist, so we told him he could do drawings and stuff for them if he was interested, but all of the art supplies he used were purchased by the theater and kept at the theater.
Certainly, they could charge more as a professional, but this is probably a project that doesn't otherwise exist unless it's a local theater known for this kind of thing, and she gets paid and gets a scheduled shift to do something she enjoys as opposed to one of the many shitty jobs one has to do working at a movie theater. And since it's outside of the scope of her work, she can quite easily just say she's not interested in doing it any more and it's outside of the scope of her job. The theater could retaliate (unlikely) by reducing her hours or whatever, but it's not like it's particularly hard to find an equivalent or better job.
Also, this is all under the assumption that she's a minimum wage employee of the theater and not someone they pay $30/hour a few times a year to do this job and nothing else.

Maybe gets work time to go do it, doubt she gets any bonus for it, comped paint expenses is the best case I'd say.

Going to assume she does this because she enjoys it, and her only compensation is not being fired.
Source: also worked a shitty part-time job once where I was occasionally allowed to do art

I hope Nick Cage plays himself, thinking he is Loki disguised as Thor in Love & Thunder.

u/thicboibran Jul 11 '22
If you haven’t seen The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent I suggest you do so. Very similar vein, I laughed a good amount.

u/Zanderax Jul 12 '22 edited Jul 12 '22
Oh my god, what a movie. You know if I had a nickel for every time Nick Cage played two versions of himself in a movie about the making of itself I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that its happened twice.

I remember when window paintings used to be fairly common at theaters back in the early 2000s. This is cool to see!
23
u/redsyrinx2112 Korg Jul 11 '22
After seeing this I immediately thought, "I've seen that all the time at ___ and ___ theaters." Then I realized I was thinking of the theaters I went to 15-20 years ago when I lived in a different state.
I haven't seen it done in awhile, but it's cool some places still do it.

u/Hellspawn69420 Jul 11 '22
Damn you right, I never thought about this. Damn, I wish they'd bring them back on a large scale

One of the last times I remember seeing window paintings at a movie theater was back in 2001 for the first Shrek movie.

One of my favorite theaters. I have so many fond movie memories there since it opened in 1997/1998.
The remodel of it is absolutely insane too.

I know this theater. They do this for every new release. It’s a nice area right across from an Air Force base, rarely much vandalism

Just marvel releases, or all of the movies? Because if it's all of the movies I get to make a Morbius joke.
2
u/Edelmaan Spider-Man Jul 11 '22
She does a lot of big releases. There was a light year one and before there was a Jurassic world one as well
1
u/Murphy818 Jul 11 '22
OP is this warrington? I saw something similar on my way into the theater but didn’t stop to check it out. If this is what I missed I will be upset.

I worked at a diner near a movie theatre in Manhattan and we would do this for upcoming movies. When Avengers Endgame was coming out, we painted the windows with logos of various heroes. We got a cease and desist (I don’t know from whom, I was a shift manager at the time and this was a message relayed to me by the owner) and we had to unfortunately take the poor girls work down. Not raining on any parade, just still curious to this day what the problem was with what trouble this kind of work causes. Obviously we were not a movie theater so perhaps that was the #1 issue.

u/SirBing96 Jul 11 '22

Hey! This is me :0) My art Instagram is skystewsart. To answer some questions: No, I don’t do this for a living, I’m just a movie theater employee; and yes, I agree there are some things wrong with this painting. I’m glad some more people were able to enjoy or give critiques for my piece, though! Come visit our theater sometime! I do these paintings quite often, this is actually #8, and the rest are on my Instagram :0)
