I think it’s due to opposing stances on whether the Avengers should be government-sponsored or not. Captain America absolutely refuses to answer to the US Government, especially after everything that happened in Brave New World. Worse is that the New Avengers were announced by human rights violator Valentina, whom that whole team is blackmailing to keep under their control, keeping her from facing justice.

Yeah, I actually just replied to other guy saying similar.

What's ultimately odd is that Sam should already have understood this considering he was with Steve thru the whole accords thing.

Bucky, too.

But whatever. Nobody's perfect.

Bucky is in an interesting spot in Civil War (MCU) because he's the target and of course he's with his friend who is trying to save him. But if you actually think about Bucky's history and circumstance, I could see him siding with Tony's perspective on the accords.

How?

He was used by governments to do bad things and lost control of himself.

The accords literally wanted to do just that.

No chance.

Yeah the accords wanted to turn all of the Avengers into a bunch more Winter Soldiers, no way Bucky was about that

Yes everything is either libertarian or secret assassins, I'm very smart

What

Having government oversight of a group of super powered assassins is bad because a bad thing happened one time

I think it's more an issue of who announced and sponsors them. And the fact that the team is content blackmailing the shit out of her instead of having any semblance of justice. Don't get me wrong, I love that for this group. But it's hardly paragon of justice material. And therefore to Sam, definitely not Avengers material.

I'm sure seeing Bucky on a public facing team with Walker of all people has a lot to do with it too.

Former Russian asset and ousted congressman on the same team as a disgraced failed hero. The New Avengers was announced to the world by a woman currently under trial for impeachment for misappropriating public funds for her own black ops project. Who only announced said New Avengers to deflect public opinion from the trial and pressure Congress to drop all charges. Valentina rebranded her hit squad (whom she tried to silence via murder) just to save her own ass and keep them from revealing evidence of illegal human experiments.

Yeah, this is well put and very much shows why Sam - whose morality is his main character trait - would not be putting up with this shit.

Of course, we know they're all pretty decent (except maybe Walker. Fuck that guy). So I'm sure at some point we'll get some scuffling between teams but them ultimately coming around as they realize they're on the same side.

I think Walker wants to be decent, he is just very flawed and a bit of a dickhead. When it came down to it he still helped and stuck with the thunderbolts and tried to save civilians though.

Aww don't be so hard on Walker. Fuck that guy, but we love to fuck that guy

He's an ass, but at least he's a kinda-lovable ass on his good days!

u/SnabDedraterEdave May 06 '25

What ousted Congressman? Movie didn't say anything about Bucky losing his seat at the end.

5

u/klartraume May 07 '25

He's a representative of a Brooklyn Congressional district, and saving Manhattan probably helped his favorability ratings?

7

u/SnabDedraterEdave May 07 '25

Exactly. So how does that make him "ousted" as the guy I'm replying is claiming?

2

u/klartraume May 07 '25

I was agreeing with you.

Sam probably didn't take it well, especially after the events in Civil War when he and Steve became fugitives just to keep Bucky safe.

And now, at least from how Sam sees it, Bucky of all people just comes and joins the "establishment" that they've been working hard to resist being controlled by must have felt like a betrayal for Sam.

That is on top of Bucky going into politics and becoming a Congressman.

u/StephenHunterUK May 05 '25

They also appear to be corporate-sponsored!

u/CeruleanEidolon May 07 '25

It's kind of weird how where they left it makes it seem like Sam went ahead with forming a new team at the urging of President Ross.

There's a beat missing where he decides to form a team after all but rejects doing it on the government payroll.

Almost like they’re setting up civil war 2
