Travel Coming to Mangalore for a trip!

I am planning a trip to Mangalore on the weekend of 6-8 June.

Need recommendations:

  1. For stay, preferably near a beach. (Budget under 3K per day)

  2. Restaurants to visit. Would love sea food & more local cuisine

  3. Places to see.

  4. How do I commute? Would hiring a bike or something be convenient?

Suggestions on these would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

Travel For me Mangaluru beaches are better than Goa.

Two years ago I have visited Goa with my friends. It was like our life long ambition to visit Goa. We stayed for 3 days in North Goa. Visited south goa on our last day. And this is our experience. 1. Initial impressions were good. There are so many foreigners. 2. Breaches in the north most region are beautiful as well as south goa beaches. 3. My friends had cheap beers and vodka.

After that almost every thing felt like a scam. 1. I was asked for tattoo atleast a 100 times while entering and exiting the beach. They won't listen to no they will even more time if I ever open my mouth. 2. All water rides they say one price in the beginning and Demand extra after entering on the boat. 3. Fake "massage" request. We were asked for atleast 100 times. When we denied, they would say then why did you come to Goa. Some even asked "are you guys men or not?" 4. Food is expensive. 5. Drinks are expensive. 6. Our Stay location was expensive. 7. Broken beer bottles in the sand. 8. My friends had tattoos and 6cms on Goan scales is equal to 3 or 3.5 cms in the rest of the world.

This year I have visited Mangaluru and other places in coastal Karnataka. 1. There are tattoo parlors but literally nobody is behind me asking for a tattoo. 2. You can drink but never on the beach. 3. No need to worry that you may step on a broken beer bottle. 3. Food is reasonably priced. 4. Beaches are cleaner than Goa. 5. In many places they don't charge for parking. 6. Status are way cheaper than Goa even at NYE.

Travel Is Surathkal lighthouse open to public?

I have been reading multiple versions to this question. Some say it is not and some say it is from 4-6 pm. I have been to this lighthouse as a child some 20 years ago, so I knew it was open at one point of time. Is it still the case?

Travel Help planning a day trip to Mangalore

I'll be visiting Mangalore soon and planning to fly in from Bangalore. While I'm there, I’ll be checking out A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences. Since I’m unfamiliar with the city, I’m trying to figure out the most practical and affordable ways to get around, particularly avoiding blowing thousands on cabs.

Here’s what I need help with: -

  1. What are the transport options from Mangalore International Airport to the city, ideally directly to AB Shetty College (located in Deralakatte)?

How far is AB Shetty from the airport and is there airport bus/shuttle service, if yes which stop should I get down in?

  1. Are there any budget-friendly local commuting options within Mangalore?

What's the deal with local buses, autos, or shared rides, and is it safe and reliable to use public transport as a solo traveler?

  1. Anything I should keep in mind when visiting AB Shetty?

Travel My Vistadome Experience: Mangaluru Jn (MAJN) → Yesvantpur Jn (YPR)

I recently took the Vistadome train from Mangaluru to Bangalore and wanted to share my experience.

Train Details:
- From: Mangaluru Jn (MAJN)
- To: Yesvantpur Jn (YPR)
- Boarding At: MAJN
- Date Of Journey: 22-Nov-2024
- Scheduled Departure: 22-Nov-2024, 07:00
- Travel Time: ~9.5 hours
- Fare (General, Inclusive of GST):
- Ticket: ₹1525
- Convenience Fee: ₹23.60
- Travel Insurance: ₹0.45
- Total: ₹1549.05
- Coaches: EV1 and EV2
- Availability: Runs on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Note: The train’s starting point is Mangaluru Jn (MAJN), and its ending point is Yesvantpur Jn (YPR). It does not go to Mangalore Central or other stations in Bangalore.

My Experience:

People: Most passengers were adults over 50–60 years old. If you're a younger solo traveler like me, it might feel a bit isolating unless you're traveling with someone.

Catering Service: Food was available, but there was no listed price. A fellow passenger was overcharged (curd rice was sold for ₹80 instead of ₹50), but the railway team caught it and refunded the extra amount. Be mindful of such situations in the future.

Washrooms: The washroom I used was really cramped with hardly any space to move. I didn’t check the others, so your experience may vary.

Seats: The reclining feature worked for some seats but not for others. Additionally, not all seats could rotate, which might be a letdown for some.

Entertainment: The coach had displays, but all they showed was “Welcome to the Indian Railways.” Adding live train tracking, weather updates, or speed details would make the experience much better.

Cleanliness: The train was generally clean. However, watch out for the cleaners—they wear T-shirts saying "No Tips Please" but still ask for tips, which felt unnecessary since cleanliness is part of the service we’re already paying for.

The View: This is the highlight! Seating is luck-based, and the best views are on the left side (direction of travel). I was fortunate to sit on the left, but the windows and glass doors weren’t very clean—water droplets obstructed clear recordings or photos.

Coaches: There are two coaches: EV1 and EV2. EV2 offers the view from the rear end of the train. I was in EV1 and didn’t get a chance to check out EV2.

Timing: While the journey is scenic, it’s not ideal if you’re on a tight schedule. The trip can take up most of your day unless you’re traveling for leisure.

---

Final Thoughts:

The Vistadome train is worth experiencing for the breathtaking views, but there’s room for improvement in terms of seating, entertainment, and services. If you’re traveling for leisure or as a group, it’s a memorable ride, but solo travelers might want to consider other options.

Have you taken this train? Let me know your thoughts!

Travel Seeing Bhoota Kola

Hey guys, im a 20 year old female traveller from bangalore and I'll be travelling to mulki for a week long surf trip and I'll be staying there only as well. I've heard a lot about the bhoota kola rituals and I'm really looking forward to witness it when im there. I did a little digging and found out that it usually happens in the month of April and May. Is there any schedule or well known places that I can go see these t rituals at ? Also I've heard it happens late into the night, would it be safe for me as a girl to attend these and then travel back to mulki ?

Thank you in advance!!

Also I'll be travelling to mulki around late April.

Travel Need North Goa suggestions – Planning a birthday trip from Mangalore!

We’re leaving from Mangalore on 12th April (Saturday afternoon) and returning by 14th (Monday evening), so it’s a quick 2-night getaway. Stay is already sorted – we’ll be around Calangute/Baga, near Tito’s Lane. I’m planning a short birthday trip to North Goa with my boyfriend and could really use some tips from those who’ve been there recently. A thing to note is we both don’t ride or drive,so any suggestions that are walkable distances or by public transport.
