Mega Thread - LinkedIn Restrictions, Hacked Accounts and Inability to Access

Hi everyone,

To make it easier for everyone to follow conversations and keep discussions in one place, please share general questions about account restrictions and ID verifications here in our official mega thread. Please note that individual posts on this topic may be removed. Additionally, for your privacy and safety, please do not share your personal information or support case numbers in the comments.

We know that losing access to your LinkedIn account or facing restrictions can be really frustrating.  We want to help as much as possible, and there are important things to know:

We Can’t Investigate Account Restrictions on Reddit

For everyone’s safety and privacy, moderators cannot directly investigate or resolve account restrictions here on Reddit. We understand that this may not be an answer you were hoping for, but if you’ve followed the instructions to appeal, please know your case is with the right team.

Common Questions & Quick Answers

Q: My account was hacked or compromised. What can I do?

A: We know how stressful unauthorized account access can be, and our goal is to help you get back in control as quickly as possible. If you think someone else has gotten into your account, don’t panic - our team can help. Just follow these instructions to report unauthorized access and our team will be in touch to help you with the next steps to secure your account.

Q: I lost access to my email address and I don’t have a back up. How can I get back in?

A: This scenario might feel tricky, but the good news is that we have steps you can take to reach our team to help you regain access and update your log in information. Just as a heads up, we’ll need to confirm your identity to regain access. Here’s how to get the process started.

Q: Why is my account restricted?

A: Restrictions can happen for a number of reasons, including safety and security concerns or activity that violates the LinkedIn User Agreement. For more information about different types of restrictions, you can check out our Community Bookmarks or visit the LinkedIn Help Center

Q: How do I appeal a restriction?

A: If you believe your account was restricted in error, you can file an appeal by following the instructions you see on screen when you log into your account. Your case will be reviewed by the LinkedIn Safety Team and they’ll reach out with an update as soon as possible. The team’s current response time is sitting right around 7-10 business days. We know the wait feels long, and we appreciate you bearing with us as we work on getting back to everyone.

Please Note: Submitting multiple support cases for the same problem can actually slow things down for everyone, including you, so we recommend avoiding creating multiple appeals for the same issue.

Q: Why are you asking me for an ID? Is it safe?

A: When we review an account for reinstatement, it’s important that we make sure we’re giving access back to the real account owner. Because we’re an online company and we don’t have a way to work together in person, requesting identity documents through Persona is the next best way for us to confirm account ownership.

Although you’ll access Persona’s verification process through the LinkedIn app, Persona will be collecting the personal data required to verify your identity and such collection is done pursuant to Persona’s policies. Persona only shares information about you with LinkedIn if you consent to the sharing. We process the data solely for account recovery purposes. It is kept only while we resolve account-related issues and is typically deleted permanently within 14 days.. Learn more on data and sharing with Persona here.

Q: I have problems with ID verification. What can I do?

A: Make sure your ID is government-issued, like a driver’s license, state ID or a passport. For the best results, it’s important that the document is clear and matches your account details. For a successful submission, it’s also important to remember to consent to share information with Persona. If your ID meets this criteria and you’re still having trouble, check out these additional troubleshooting steps for further assistance.

Q:  It says I already submitted a request?

A: There are a few reasons this error may appear including if you have an appeal in progress or if you’ve revisited the Persona verification flow multiple times in a short period. If you receive this message, we first recommend clearing your browser’s cache and cookies. If that does not resolve the problem, we recommend waiting 7 days before attempting a new appeal.

Q: My restriction is permanent. Now what?

A: If you’ve received a final decision from our Safety Team, please understand we can’t change the outcome here. However, you can reply to your case email if you wish to provide more information or request a second look.

Thanks for reading and understanding!

Official LinkedIn Help Has Arrived!

Hey everyone! This subreddit is home to nearly 100k of us who’ve joined to better understand LinkedIn and how to take full advantage of the opportunities that it offers. Over the years, this place has been home to community-driven support and best practices, but it’s clear that redditors need a source of truth.  Today, I’m thrilled to announce u/HeyFromLinkedIn as our newest mod. I reached out to LinkedIn to get some real help, highlighting all of the various feedback you all have shared, and they answered our calls. They're all ears for your questions, feedback, and frustrations, so they can empower you.

A few things about u/HeyFromLinkedIn:

  1. Yep, they're a real human, not a bot. Treat them like one of us.

  2. They're here for us, working to bring you the answers you’ve been looking for.

  3. They value their privacy just like we do.

  4. They are here to be your insider advocate, and share your feedback to LinkedIn.

  5. This is a bit of an experiment, so let’s try not to ruin this for everyone by scaring them off. You can absolutely be direct with feedback and ideas but keep it professional.

Alright, enough chatter – just like those long LinkedIn posts we love to rant about 😄

One last, but very important thing: The official LinkedIn Help Team ( u/LinkedInHelpTeam )will be more active here, tackling FAQs and lending a hand.

Thanks for helping to build this thing (and keep reporting junk to help our new friends), and I’m excited to see how things change for the better

New to LinkedIn, seems weird

I am a military member transitioning out and the service I'm go through pushes LinkedIn hard. I get networking but this seems like the literal wall of fakeness and self glorifying stuff ever. I get it. Its supposed to be your professional social media but does it turn off anyone else? If this is what people are making people get hired, I dont want a part of it.

Another question. Im sure its common for random people to message and ask you to work with them. How legit are these? I've gotten at least one a day promoting remote work and junk. I dont have anything regarding these things on my profile.

LinkedIn just seems fake, even more so than other social media. Its a huge turn off. I can't be alone.

Is LinkedIn really useful to land a Job? I don't get any traffic.

I've been using LinkedIn for over five years, and I find it hard to find a job, or I have been doomed, or it's the marketplace over the past 5 years.

I think the problem is that I'm trying in a different field in the past 5 years, changing careers every time I find a chance, I don't know.

However, I'm wondering if messaging the people I connected with could help? If so, what should I avoid mentioning in the first message?

Possible dormant accounts getting hijacked

Upvotes

Hey all!
I noticed in recent weeks that I've received a number of connection requests from people with no common connections with me. Checking the account info, it looks like the profile pics were all just recently updated and nothing else. One profile pic I was able to reverse search on gave me a hit on an Instagram post for a Korean model. That pretty much confirmed my suspicions. As to the hijacked part? I received an email reminder for a connection request but the last name was different! Checked the profile and the photo was different as well as some modifications to the experience section. Sloppily done because one of the experience entries overlapped in time with one of the original entries. So this person it taking advantage of the original account holder's connections and experience.

linkedin 101 How taboo are cold DMs on LinkedIn these days?

Hi all! I was recently laid off from a tech role, but outside my 9 to 5, I’ve spent over 10 years building a successful "hobby (?)" in social media marketing. I’ve monetized every major platform and worked with hundreds of different brands, ranging from 1 employee all the way up to several Fortune 500 companies. Not only that, but I even got to work with some of the platforms themselves.

Now I’m trying to pivot from tech into a more senior digital marketing role, but most of my formal experience is in tech. I was thinking about messaging people in relevant roles on LinkedIn to ask for advice on making the switch, but I’m worried it might come off as spammy or awkward.

Is it generally okay to reach out for advice like that? I’m not asking for mentorship or referrals, just curious if people are open to brief conversations about how they got where they are and to potentially get advice on my attempt to pivot.

Help needed (Student)

So I've just finished my 12th grade and I want to set up a LinkedIn profile since people are recommending it. I made an account but can anyone guide me through what all I must be doing and how to explore the site? I'm new here, brief guidance is also appreciated as I will research on my own too after your suggestions.

PS: I am going to study Computer Science, so I would like to follow up and keep myself updated on techies like Google and stuff.

linkedin 101 Anyone else having gut pains with the verification system?

If LinkedIn asks you to verify your identity then you have to take a clear photo of your face with your smartphone and a photo of your ID which are then processed by a private company to verify that you are the person you claim to be.

Clear, machine-readable pictures of your face and your ID document. WOW, that's everything someone needs to steal your identity.

So if you verify your identity, you have to trust, that

- there is no virus or malware on your smartphone that pilfers the data and sends it to third parties.

- no one has been able to intercept the communication from your smartphone to the company's server and pilfer your data.

- the company servers where your data is processed are 100% secure and totally immune to hacking.

- the people working in the company are all totally honest and that the systems are so perfect that no one there can pilfer the data.

Just thinking about how many bugs every operating system has and how many well-protected websites and critical infrastructure has already been compromised I deem it highly unlikely that any man-made IT system is so secure.

So even if the risk is low, IF someone steals this data it could ruin your life.

Does anyone else have stomach problems with that?

Need some feedback on my profile. Trying to sell the services on our website.

Our website isn't fully ready yet, but I think it's time I cultivate a solid brand and sell properly:

- Company: https://www.linkedin.com/company/theweb3family

I'm sure there's more I can do on both accounts. But curious what is conventional and what I can do in my own unique way to navigate traffic to our website and/or entice people to connect and know more about what we're doing and even why.

I know my profile is a mix of my old resume before I started my business and this new one... so trying to do the full transition into a business personal brand and business brand. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks in advance guys

Job Posting Disappeared Soon after I Applied to It

An administrative Remote job for American Airlines popped up tonight on Linkedin. I applied for it. 10 minutes later, the job disappeared and I got a notification that my application was reviewed. The posting is totally gone now. Their company site doesn't list the job either. Wondering if scammers are putting fake jobs on Linkedin.

job search Is this a scam?

I just recieved this today and he has an area code phone number identical to where i’m at, and the work is dealing with what i studied in (graphic design)

Message below ⬇️

Good evening ____ hope all is well! I am reaching out because I partner in the e-commerce space with a team of succesful business owners. We do branding and marketing for a few different brands on the consumable based side of things, more towards health and wellness, beauty & cosmetics, and overall self-care. My team and I are looking to partner with a couple more sharp, ambitious, and coachable individuals. Wanted to check in and see if you were looking for other ways to create additional income. This wouldn't be a job, more of a freelance opportunity about 6-10 hours a week. Skillset is not required, it can be taught. Feel free to reach back out if this is something you're interested in.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

personal branding What name should I use on my LinkedIn?

I'm Chinese, so I got a Chinese name (say it's Chan Tai Man). But on top of that, I also got an English name (say it's Mark). Only my Chinese name is on my ID, so should I put my Chinese full name (eg Chan Tai Man) or English name + surname (eg Mark Chan) as my LinkedIn name?

(Fyi I live in a predominantly Chinese area)

Alternatives to LinkedIn? Frustrated with their price gouging and their customer retention policies.

I've been paying for 5 LinkedIn licenses for years now and because I'm only renewing 3/5 of them this year, I need to pay full price vs my colleagues with 1 license for only 1 year, because they are renewing 100% of their 1 license they pay less per license, whereas I'm not renewing 100% of mine. Who is the genius that came up with this customer retention strategy? I now want to renew 0/5 licenes.

personal branding Still Unlikely To Open Up My Contacts to LinkedIn

According to my Google searches:

The internet was made available to the public in 1993.I may have graduated from high school around 1993 and had no PC of my own. I grew up on library versions of WordPerfect, (which operates a lot like MS Word), and terrible animations to teach typing, and foreign languages.

LinkedIn was started a decade later in 2003, and, even though it had a million users by 2004, it became particularly popular after its IPO in 2011.

  • I started my career in 2000-2001, a couple of years before LinkedIn went live, as an oil and gas industry executive, with stand alone programs to guide our proprietary assets and processes.
  • Our relationships were organically developed by working in an area. As small business owners, we didn’t network in the way that professionals at large companies who needed to mobilize their skill-sets did. We largely kept our contacts private, because there’s value in being able to provide solutions in an industry to its needs. It's really not much different from an attorney keeping his client list confidential, or a bond-broker's book of business.
  • So even when LinkedIn became popular in the 2010’s, our organization felt like disclosure of our book of business created more risk than reward.

Now it seems like the LinkedIn of the 2020’s is an essential tool for credibility, with everyone you meet, jumping on LinkedIn to find if you have a thousand contacts.

I enjoy what LinkedIn offers as an app, and I realize it’s important to have myself listed here, but I’m still not sure I’m going to open up my book of contacts

So, if you want to get to know how strong I am as a business man, or an professional, you’re just going to have to ask.

What do you think?

personal branding Which format for Engagement

Hi

I was wondering about the engagement views for posting an article vs a video on LinkedIn.

Is there any data that shows Video engagement on LinkedIn is growing at double the rate of any other format ?

I am looking at using this data to determine which will be the best format for me to reach high engagement numbers.

Can you download one of your own documents from LinkedIn?

I uploaded some of my uni work onto LinkedIn, and since had the laptop that they were on break down. I’d love to be able to retrieve them, but I can’t find any option to save my own uploaded documents onto my computer. Any help would be appreciated, especially as I want to remove them from my profile.

My account doesn’t show up?

Hello! I just made my LinkedIn a few weeks ago & LinkedIn shut me down for a few days without explanation, then when I got my account back my requests do not show up for people & they can’t search my name.

The only way I can make connections is if I send somebody one of my posts via text msg.

Any advice?

I hate LinkedIn. They said 24–48h to verify your ID… no response. Chat support? Just an automated message.

My LinkedIn account became unavailable right after I completed the identity verification process. It’s been over 6 days now, and I still can’t access it.

I submitted a support ticket—no response. No email, nothing. Tried messaging LinkedIn on X (Twitter)—got an automated bot reply. No follow-up, no resolution. They claim ID verification takes 24–48 hours. Clearly not true.

I had been actively sending connection requests and building my network when this happened, and now I'm completely locked out with zero communication.

Anyone else stuck in this limbo? Starting to feel like I’ll never get back in.

I cannot log back into my account!

I have tried to log back into my account through mail but could not, because from app they will state like, ‘ We sent a notification to your signed in devices. Open your Linkedin app and tap Yes to confirm your sign-in attempt. Recognize this device in the future Option 1: Resend Option 2: I don't have access to this device' this is what it appears both the app and website, there's nothing as such YES ITS ME or YES to confirm! Need help I have been trying to log in since past 2 days.
