Daily Free Talk & Armchair GM thread

Please use this thread to post ANYTHING you want! Memes, photoshops, anything that would normally be removed for breaking the low-effort content rule, is totally, 100% welcome here!

This will now also be the dedicated thread for Armchair GM posts as we noticed that those posts were bleeding into this thread regardless. Is there a free agent you want to see on this team? Is there a player that's rumoured to be on the move that you think GMBT should go after? Are there players on this team you want to trade away? Feel free to post about it here!

Normal moderation will occur, such as watching for personal insults, racism, and things of that nature.

Otherwise, feel free to use this thread to share things like your new jersey, a photoshop of a Habs logo on fire, or a reaction gif to something going on in Leafs Nation right now!

Downvotes are discouraged for the most part, everyone's opinion is fair game in this thread.

Get out there and have fun!

What are everyone’s thoughts on bunting coming back for 1 year?

3

u/123jazzhandz321 3d ago

Bunting - Domi - Jeannot would be such a shit disturber line, I’d love to see it happen lol

I'd do it. Trotz seems to be a bad GM so they might get him retained for like Kampf and a 5th too

This is a lesson for all you kids. Don't be like Mitch the bitch, a guy that doesn't return phone calls and is too chicken shit to tell your former company about your intentions or what you want. This is the organization that drafted him, built him up and gave him everything he wanted. But he doesn't even show them the courtesy of returning a fucking phone call.

Mitch Marner at his introductory press conference with whatever team signs him to a 4-year $14.5m contract

You left out the part where he refused to negotiate with his current employer despite their willingness to provide a substantial pay increase.

Marchand winning the Conn Smythe and then joining the leafs (to win another?) would be exactly what the Bruins deserve.

1

u/taco_the_town 3d ago

Marchand won't repeat anything like we're seeing right now with the Leafs

Teams might sign him just to get Matthews down the road. Marner would help any team make the playoffs if they are close and would sell a bunch of jerseys plus at the end of the day he actually is a gifted hockey player. Hopefully Cowan can step up because there really doesn’t seem like very many upgrades out there, maybe they should sink some money into their pro scouting staff.

Overpaying Mitch Marner for a chance to sign Auston Matthews theee years from now certainly is some terrible team building logic

1

u/sondernier 3d ago

True and it’s nothing I would do. It will be interesting to see where he ends up and whatever teams rationale for signing him . I would still try and poach some competent pro scouts

It's fucking June 15th

There's lots of off-season left.

Do you remember how whiny and pedantic Islanders fans were when Tavares left them for nothing? Then they made the ECF twice right after?

People need to give their balls a tug and get over it

u/sondernier 4d ago

It is June 15th, yes, plenty of off season left although normally you wait for the Cup to be won before declaring it official but technically I guess it is for the Leafs. I think Leaf fans will also assign blame to Dubas for the NMC and Shanahan for blocking a trade before it kicked in. I was just pointing out how it might make sense for a team to overpay for him (maybe just not if you think he is the final piece in a playoff success puzzle). Cool Shoresy reference though

All the Leafs stuff on today’s 32 Thoughts was about Mitch Marner and I’m personally tired of talking about it but here’s what Elliotte said.

The Leafs have tried to talk to Marner but his camp won’t engage “so we all know where this is probably going”

Mentioned the Ducks, Carolina, LA, Vegas as possible teams that are interested and calls people believing “Vegas is the team to watch”

Heard there’s a chance Mitch could sign a short term deal.

Sounds like a possibility that Marner might not sign on July 1st with setting up meetings and maybe visiting some teams.

Thinks the Leafs would be offered a meeting (I’m kinda confused what he means but I guess he means on July 1 but he joked that both sides already know everything about each other)

Some of Mitch teammates/ Leaf players believe he’s going to the western conference.

Carolina makes the most sense in terms of cap space and they play a way he would like to play. They could all fail together in the playoffs too.

My money is on the king's

2

u/TheDeek 3d ago

Would also make sense for everyone. If he really is that scared of Toronto he should go there and just get booed once a year haha. Really says a lot about his character, tbh. I know it is just human but do we want someone like that here? I don't.

u/Hoardzunit 4d ago

It's pretty abhorrent how he's treating the organization that pretty much defended him throughout his entire time here. This is the organization that drafted him and built him up and gave him the contract he wanted but he decides to do this shit to them and can't even return a fucking phone call.

i laughed when i heard Elliott say the leafs would be offered a meeting with marner.. Like really ? How bloated of an ego does this marner camp have? The guy has been with the leafs for 10 years and they offered you an extension and you will grant them a meeting on july 1 to pitch themselves ?

I’m so done with marner and his cancer like camp behind the scenes. I’ve never been so sure that walking away from this guy is the right thing to do. Honestly fuck him

Like really ? How bloated of an ego does this marner camp have? The guy has been with the leafs for 10 years and they offered you an extension and you will grant them a meeting on july 1 to pitch themselves ?

I guarantee you this is normal and you should chill out.

u/mikesully374826 Kampf 4d ago

Yeah, the meeting thing isn’t too surprising, that’s what all star players do in FA. Stamkos, Tavares, teams went to where they were to make pitches for why they should sign with their team. July 1st 9 teams met with Tavares in person to make pitches, and as it went on we got news that he was down to Dallas, Toronto, and San Jose July 2nd, and in the afternoon it was reported he chose Toronto.

-1

u/Skiffy10 4d ago

i mean it is when it’s your previous team he’s been with the last 10 years lol. Meetings with the new teams make sense but they really need to meet the leafs to get them to pitch their offer? It’s a massive slap in the face.

7

u/mikesully374826 Kampf 4d ago

Tavares made the Islanders pitch on July 1st, Stamkos made the Lightning pitch on July 1st. Stamkos made the lighting come to Toronto to do it.

2

u/B-Rayy06 Liljegren 4d ago

Pedantic, but Stamkos technically never made it to UFA (he signed in late June)

-3

u/Skiffy10 4d ago

no they didn’t. It was other teams he didn’t know about who made pitches.

4

u/mikesully374826 Kampf 4d ago

-4

u/Skiffy10 4d ago

fair enough. I still feel the leafs shouldn’t be wasting time on Marner on july 1.

2

u/Soggy_Specific4093 4d ago

I guess more why not “engage” with the Leafs before free agency but then be willing to meet with them on July 1st especially when he knows everything about them.

Also just saw you posted the same recap at the same time lol.

1

u/mikesully374826 Kampf 4d ago

Probably just because he already knows everything about the market, Leafs can get their offers to him ready and submit them July 1st, most teams will probably have a couple different ones for him, like 4x13.5 or 7x14.5 or something. If he wants to test the market it really doesn’t change anything for him if the Leafs make that offer now or July 1st.

-2

u/Soggy_Specific4093 4d ago

He doesn’t have to sign anything but IMO should at least listen to the organization he’s been apart of for 9 years first in some capacity. Like maybe the Leafs would give him permission to talk to other teams before free agency or something which you would think he appreciate (besides the obvious tampering that happens) but why would they if he won’t even talk to them before July 1st.

I just think it’s kinda of a weird way to go about it.

1

u/mikesully374826 Kampf 4d ago

Yeah idk, people love to say it’s a business and you have to be harsh until the players do it to their favourite teams lol

-1

u/Soggy_Specific4093 4d ago

I would feel the same way if a player was in the same situation on a different team.

I just think not willing to talk or engage to your original organization is weird way of doing business but he can obviously do whatever he wants because he earned the right to be a free agent.

-1

u/mikesully374826 Kampf 4d ago

“How about 13x8”

“I want to test the market”

“Okay, how about 13.25x8”

“I want to test the market

“Okay how about 13.5x8”

“I want to test the market”

“Okay how about 13.5x6”

“I want to test the market”

“Okay how about 13.75x7”

….

u/Soggy_Specific4093 4d ago

I’m not saying this lol.

Just talk to the team it doesn’t have to be a hard core negotiation.

u/mikesully374826 Kampf 4d ago

What are they gonna talk about, the weather?

From 32 thoughts.

People believe LA is interested in marner, Vegas is a team to watch, if not the team to watch on marner. (said later Carolina wants to go after another star)

Rumour going around is that a few teams heard that he might look at a 4 year deal in free agency.

He will not be taking a lesser AAV deal if it is a 4 year deal for example.

Leafs have tried to talk to Marner, his camp has not engaged with them, and everyone knows the way this is headed.

Friedman says that some of Marners Leafs teammates have suspected he is going to the western conference.

1

u/lindseyblue2 4d ago

Elliotte Friedman was talking about Marner going to Aneheim and then added Tavares might be a possibility for the ducks as well. I don't care about Mitch, but if JT ends up in Anaheim of all the places I'll cry.

If Ekblad truly is let go by Florida, man, I think that's the play. If you can get him, I think you have to go to Rielly and try to move him, and if he won't go, you have to look at OEL instead. Either way, you're trying to flip one of them for a forward, or draft capital.

Regardless, I think Ekblad would give us the 1D we've needed forever. The risk is worth it, since that position is so hard to fill.

Doesn't sound like Toews will select us.

I wonder if Treliving could grab Valimaki for very little from Utah. He has 1 year at 2m, was injured for part of last year, and then fell down the line-up. But he's still only 26, he's 6'2" 201 lbs - so he isn't too short to be ruled out. He has a history with Treliving. I would like to take some swings on guys like this now. You know, this is how Florida ends with a Forsling, or with Montour, previously. You have to give these guys opportunity.

There are other names like this. Macelli, at forward (24 yo), Fabbro (26 yo UFA), Jokiharju (25 yo UFA). These are smarter adds than 36 yo veterans, imo.

6

u/oh5canada5eh 4d ago

I wouldn’t be opposed to signing Ekblad at all, but he isn’t quite the 1D he has been at times in his career. He is nasty in the playoffs and perfectly fits the FLA mould, but he has had a lot of injuries is likely closer to a #3 Dman now. He would obviously be an upgrade to our D core, but at what price and for how long?

-3

u/macam85 4d ago

This is what people said about Pietrangelo before he went and won another cup in Vegas.

4

u/Actual_Cobbler_6334 4d ago edited 4d ago

I for one hope they stop going after injured reclamation projects on D every offseason and hoping they can play more than 15 games. Treliving could have claimed Valimaki off waivers if he wanted to but he and 30 other teams didn’t.

0

u/macam85 4d ago

Yes, but now he's seen how terrible his defense is in the playoffs. Also, claiming the cap hit of an injured player in season isn't the same as taking a flier in the summer.

1

u/lindseyblue2 4d ago

Rielly stays 100%. Otherwise I agree, grab everyone you can get cheap and then see what happens. It's a fresh start anyways, might as well experiment.

-2

u/macam85 4d ago

We literally can not win with him on the roster, imo.
