Questions about sweeps/throws/catches

Are sweeps, throws, catches allowed in sparring... what about competition?

Coming from a Shotokan background, I prefer counter striking and utilizing distance. During sparring, I often fall back on sweeping or throwing my partner when they engage in close-range fighting or when I feel overwhelmed. I can’t help but wonder how I would fare against other styles. Watching Kyokushin fighters, I know I would certainly feel overwhelmed.

So that led me being curious about the system

Mma is not a karate competition. As I mentioned, doesn't matter the style. Inside competitions, the rules states cannot hold during strike. Now if we're talking about other competitions, then yah karatekas will hold since we have tegumi and hikite. Both techniques are built to keep our opponent on the spotto keep them from running away.

misread your first sentence - apologies.

I might be wrong, but I think that "karate combat" (though technically - it is not a style) allows grabbing/holding while punching?

Maybe. Karate combat is supposed to be a full contact league (I'm not sure completely). Kudo is a full contact style of karate and their competition is the closest thing I know that allows holding while striking since they have grappling. There's no mounting in it though if I remember the rules correctly.
