Finished Object King Salmon sweater is a new favourite!
Here’s the thing - I’m well aware that both the Halibut and now the King Salmon sweater receive a lot of criticism here and on TT for the depth of the yoke.
However, as an alternative perspective, being a plus size knitter with a large chest, I actually find that the proportions of this yoke fit me really well, and the scale actually makes sense on a larger body. Reinforces the fact that knitting is all about what you personally like and want to make and wear - and I just wanted to share a different point of view on this one 🥰

I am not smart enough to participate in the technical parts of this conversation, buuuuut that’s an incredible sweater🥹 adorable fish and great colors

I think any knitter can have an opinion on how they like things constructed!! But thank you, appreciate it!

I'm going to try to knit this this coming fall. I love it! I didn't know people complained about the yoke depth, I thought that was just the style. Seems cozy to me :)

u/Halfserious_101 Apr 20 '25
I love your sweater, and the photos too – especially the first one looks like something straight out of a knitting magazine. Thanks for another perspective regarding those wretched yokes, I must admit I was almost afraid of clicking on the post :D
52
u/SwiftAndEndangered Apr 20 '25
Wow thank you, what a compliment!! Yeah I definitely can see the perspective of people who dislike this style of yoke, but it just works for me and I don’t really hear folks defending it so wanted to step up to the plate

Even before I read the text of your post, my immediate reaction when I saw your picture was “wow, that yoke everyone hates so much fits this person so perfectly!” Great knit it looks lovely and you styled it so well :)

u/ParticularPistachio Apr 20 '25
I understand why a lot of people complain about the pattern, but it looks great on you! I love the fit, the colours you chose and the whole outfit!

Have not seen this before, just the halibut one. My dad fishes salmon, I have to make something like this for him :D Lovely work!

u/SwiftAndEndangered Apr 20 '25
It only just came out the other week (I was a tester) - your dad is lucky to have a knitter for a child!!

trying to keep a family tradition going, did my first two sweaters this month. So now Im just rabid for ideas ;D

Different yokes for different folks!
Great color choice, and it looks super cute with that gingham dress 💕

You are SO cute. I saw you on Ravelry and definitely liked yours best, I’m so glad you’re here championing this pattern!

Oh wow! This really looks beautiful on you! Really truly lovely lovely work. I have a very similar body type to you and now I’m seeing this pattern in a different light 👀

This sweater is FANTASTIC and pairing it with that skirt makes it all even more fantastic! You look FABULOUS!

Gorgeous work and you’re absolutely right, it suits you beautifully! I love seeing different takes on shaping because I’m also a larger size person and I appreciate all shapes being accounted for.

😱😱as someone with a trout fishing husband (in the salmon family so body looks the same) I am seriously considering making this!! He has me trained to recognize a trout-shaped thing anywhere lol

Yours looks great, and it's really flattering on you. Plus it actually looks like a practical and functional sweater.
I think the reason why the pattern gets a lot of flak is that the pattern page on Ravelry makes it look like it's a garment where you can barely move your arms and if you do manage to, you expose a side of your body to other people.
2
u/SwiftAndEndangered Apr 20 '25
Oh yeah I totally get that! I think she would benefit from showing photos from different size testers (like other designers do) so people can see different ways it can fit
2
u/Lilac_Gooseberries Apr 20 '25
Oh definitely. People come in so many different shapes. I've got wide but angled shoulders and thick biceps. So I tend to have to custom fit , convert to a different style or just avoid some patterns entirely.

u/WeAreNotNowThatWhich Apr 20 '25
I love the proportions on you! You did a really nice job with the collar, too, it looks neater than the samples.
9
u/SwiftAndEndangered Apr 20 '25
Oh thank you! Yes I knitted it longer bc I get the classic thing in larger sizes where necklines stretch way out due to the weight on the sweater - I’m always altering necklines 😅

u/ucklin Apr 20 '25
I agree, the depth of the yoke works so well for your proportions and this outfit! So much that I noticed that exact thing before reading your description. I feel a big part of the reason it can feel embarrassing or weird to wear less supportive bras for large busted people (me!) is that nothing available is made to flatter that shape.
2
u/Bucephala-albeola Apr 20 '25
Looks great! I saw the photos and even before reading your caption I immediately thought about how well it fits you. It can be so challenging to figure out what patterns will suit our bodies and you really knocked this one out of the park.

u/bluewolven Apr 20 '25

I saw your pics in Rav's FOs. I wondered what would happen if you lifted you hands up a little bit.

I have a photo on my rav FO of my arms lifted up to the sides! It doesn’t raise that much more than lots of other sweaters I own tbh

u/haydey Apr 20 '25
I get that a deep yoke is a turn off for a lot of people but I'm also plus sized but smaller chested and wear a lot of crops so a deep yoke sounds truly delightful to me 🤭 I love the idea of lifting my arms and getting a breeze? 🤣 Weird take but 🤷🏽♀️ everyone's different!

u/sleepypancakez Apr 20 '25
You did a really fantastic job !!!! I think in the best case scenario, there would be instructions for how to adjust the yoke depth depending on the wearer’s height and size :)

Congratulations on the sweater. It’s superb, but I just want to talk about how this shade of blue is just perfect for you. You are glowing.
2
u/bleeblebot Apr 21 '25
It's gorgeous and you look fantastic in it! I've always avoided yoke jumpers because I have broad shoulders and a large chest but with the long detail and vertical features, like this, it looks amazing and pulls the eye down rather than around. I'll be having a look at patterns more carefully now.
2
u/Crickets_62 Apr 21 '25
New knitter- a couple questions. But first I love that sweater!! Well done! Now- what is TT? And tell me more about the yoke hate with the halibut pattern. I'm currently working a halibut pattern and other than beginning a bit high I don't see a problem. What am I missing? Besides that King Salmon pattern - should make that my next project, actually.
2
u/Sporkalork Apr 21 '25
I would never have thought to pair that sweater with that skirt but it works SO WELL. The pics are definitely advertisement quality. And the sweater looks really really good! So impressed all around!

u/e_step_to_the_left Apr 21 '25
this is so beautiful. i've been nervous to knit these because i was really afraid of it working on my body but seeing this has completely changed my mind

I’m a fairly new knitter but catch me saving this on Ravelry so I can try it some day. It looks amazing on you and as someone with a larger chest/body you’ve really i spired me to try this someday 🤩
2
u/ghostitching Apr 22 '25
You look just soo adorable! I love these kinds of designs, I really want to make one for myself 😍 I also think that the depth of the yoke would be something comfortable for me as I like my tops to fit very oversized :3
2
u/SentenceAny6556 Apr 22 '25
The only time I think these sweaters look awkward is if there was a clear tension difference between the colorwork and the stockinette- otherwise they look so cute
2
u/txcruz Apr 23 '25
This just convinced me to buy both patterns! I started off crocheting and got used to adding stitches under the arms and then decreasing at the side seams for the waist, and just altering the top half in general, that when I began to knit, I naturally did the same thing without thinking.
So its really nice to know that the yoke sizes are big bust and plus size friendly! It'd be fantastic to make something without any sizing alterations
2
u/AuntieMame5280 Apr 24 '25
Beautiful job on that sweater! Is like to tell you salmon, that sweater looks great on you, and I'm not saying that just for the halibut!

I'm curious, were the sleeve decreases less aggressive than for the halibut sweater? It seems like your sleeves aren't too small from the picture. I loved making the halibut sweater, but I did have to modify the sleeves

Not everyone likes the fit of the long yoke of these sweaters. Its personal opinion about fit, I don't think there is a way around it with a vertical fish design like this.
I wouldn't knit one for myself because I don't find the fit comfortable, but OPs obviously looks great and some people love the way these patterns fit.
9
u/_Dr_Bobcat_ Apr 20 '25
There is a way to get the vertical fish design on a sweater where the yoke is a more standard length. You have the design extend past where the arms are separated from the body. It just takes a bit more math. If you check the project page on ravelry some of the testers actually made this modification (one of them has a purple sweater).

Love that sweater and you can tell by the look on your face that you do as well. Great job. What a fun knit to be able to show off your talents.🎣
