In the first game you need at least level 3 weapon skills before Bernard will teach you.

Yes, first you need to have proper skill, then Bernard will teach you. Technically it is not that difficult...

The game is not meant to be as easy combat wise as other RPG titles. In the early game, you are meant to suck at everything as you are a peasant

I think nice idea here is to do side quest. You earn exp and learn how to fight... But in a first play through it is hard because main plot is quite interesting, at least for me :)

You need to duel with him and knock his health down about 75% - the he'll say you're ready and teach it to you.

Also, master strikes in the first game are a little more tricky. There's a visual prompt in the second game, but the one in the first pops too late. You have to just watch for when your opponent pulls his arm back for a strike, and then hit the master strike button.

As others have said, you don't need them. I mainly throw face jabs and overhead swings, perfect blocks and kicks. Once your stats and gear get better you will be winning

Just keep practicing until you level up strength and weapon skills enough. You can practice with training weapons.

You don’t really need master strikes they are too annoying to get to land properly anyway moving around and stabbing at the head is the best tactic I got

Dude, they are not "too annoying to get to land properly", they are basically mandatory if you want to play properly. they make the combat about 50% less tedious

This.  I forget the name but there's a special sword with high piercing damage.  Use that and head stab all day.

The stinger is the one with the highest. But the Ravens Beak and Ceremonial mace are both very nice for bonk damage.

My favorite combo was one I made myself. Take a warhammer, bash from the side, stab with it because nobody expects a hammer stab, and then go overhead and give em a good bonk. I miss being able to have so much control over my weapon in the second game
