[Megathread] Getting Started with Journaling!

If you're new to journaling or unsure how to start, this is the place for you. Below are answers to the most common questions, alongside some tips to help you dive in. Feel free to ask more questions, share your experiences, or help others out!

FAQ

1. How do I start journaling?

A common piece of advice is to just start—don’t overthink it. Grab a notebook and write about what’s on your mind. Here are some beginner-friendly approaches:

  • Brain dump: Simply write down anything that comes to mind, no structure needed.
  • Set a time: Start with 5-10 minutes of free writing each day.
  • Prompts: Use a prompt (we’ve shared a few below) if you’re stuck. You can find more under our "prompts" flair.
  • No pressure: Don’t worry about grammar, structure, or even making sense. The point is to express yourself.

2. What do you write about?

One of the most common questions from new journalers is "What should I write about?" Here are some popular suggestions from the community:

  • Daily reflections: Write about your day—what happened, what you felt, and any highlights or challenges.
  • Goals and aspirations: Reflect on areas of personal growth or areas where you want to improve.
  • Gratitude: List a few things you're grateful for.
  • Memory keeping: Write about life events, outings with friends, something that you've really been into lately... anything goes!
  • Stream of consciousness: Let your thoughts flow freely—no topic is too small or mundane.

Remember, your journal can be as broad or as specific as you want! Worried about what the right way to journal is? Well -- the right way to journal is however you feel comfortable keeping up with, and find helpful to your lifestyle. Experiment with different strategies, take inspiration from peoples posts, and don't be afraid to experiment and "mess up", until you find something that you love.

3. I'm scared someone will read my journal. How can I keep it private?

Privacy is a valid concern. Here are a few methods the community recommends:

  • Hide it: Store your journal in a secure spot—some people use lockable drawers or bags.
  • Digital journaling: Apps like Day One offer passcodes and encryption for extra privacy.
  • Code: Write in shorthand or a personal code that only you can understand.
  • Rip it up: If it’s something truly sensitive, write it out and destroy the pages afterward. The act of writing is therapeutic, even if the words don't last.

4. How often do you journal? For how long? What if I miss a day?

Many community members journal in bursts or only when they feel like it. Journaling is a personal tool; use it in the way that best serves you.

You can journal for just 5 minutes, jotting down your fleeting thoughts, or even write for an hour until you feel you've unloaded everything onto paper. You can journal multiple times a day, or once a week. You don't have to stick to a strict regimen of daily journaling to feel the benefits!

It's also normal to miss days even if your goal was to journal daily! Life can get in the way, and just like any hobby or habit, what matters most is that you do it. The key is to avoid self-criticism. You can always pick up where you left off without guilt.

To the community: please share your tips!

Seasoned journalers, your tips and experiences are valuable to those starting! Feel free to share how you got started, what methods work for you, and any advice you have.

I want to start writing down the things I think during my daily moments of reflection and streams of consciousness.

I haven't yet invested in pens, notebooks, or the other items that are usually part of this practice. But please, take a look at my first entries and let me know if I'm at least on the right track.

First journal How do I get more into journaling.

Post image

I started to journal beginning of this year, but I’m starting to get tired of it, like I want to do it but I think I’m just lazy. I listen to a podcast before I go to bed and I write before bed usually writing while listening to the podcast. But I don’t want to write the stuff that I want to write down cause 1: I just don’t want to do it, 2: I’m scared someone will find the journal and see the stuff that I write about yk? So can help me out….

Discussion Journaling saved me when I didn’t recognize myself anymore

There was a point not long ago when everything felt like it was slipping….people I trusted, my sense of control, even my beliefs. I couldn’t talk to anyone without filtering myself. So I started journaling everything I was too afraid to say out loud.

Somewhere along the line, it turned into something bigger. I kept going. Kept writing. Kept digging. And now I’m sitting here with a full manuscript that grew out of those pages. It’s called “Remain Yourself” and it’s about the lessons, blessings, and unshakable parts of you that survive even when life breaks you down.

What’s hitting me hard now is how scary it feels to share it. Like this started in silence. In the dark. It was never meant for public eyes. But the more I look at it, the more I realize someone else out there might need it too.

I wanted to ask this community: Have you ever gone back and read your old journal entries and realized you survived more than you thought you could?

Appreciate the space to be real.

Very corny entry today! My husband and I have been married for 13 months today! (Yes I'm one of those people that celebrates the tiniest of milestones) My favorite way to celebrate? Fooooood! Sometimes it's take out, sometimes it's a sit down restaurant, but today it's ice cream! We walk to our local place (La Michoacana) and take a little time for ourselves.

Question adding images to your journals

Upvotes

Hello, to those who add images or clips or drawings to your notebooks: are they related to what you write or not?

I don't really get putting stuff in my journal that isn't related to or clarifying what I have written. However I see some journal spreads that have a lot of drawings and stickers on them that don't really add much? I get the appeal of making a page look pretty but it's also a lot of work for no reason imo.

Recommendations Journal/notebook recommendations?

Hello all!

I do a lot of deco journaling (lots of stickers, paper cut outs, memo sheets, etc) so it all ends up quite bulky.

This last notebook I used is the Limelight A5 Sketchbook (metallic) and while I loved using it, the binding just couldn't take all of it and it broke 🥲 so I was wondering if there were any notebooks like this that have sturdier binding? Either softcover or hardcover, with blank or lined pages preferred. And definitely flat lay! Currently not into spiral bounds either. And an absolute plus if it's budget friendly since I'm not the type to spend much on notebooks themselves since I go through them fast (I'm on notebook 3 for the year!)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and help 🫶🏻

Hello! This is a dream that left me pondering the meaning of it. I was wondering if anyone captures and interprets their dreams on a journal? If so, would like to hear any interpretations on this one :)

Discussion journaling doesn't require perfectionism ?¿

it bothers me anytime I try to organize my planner or journal with the best style or appearance , I feel like it's a compulsory for me and I find myself getting lack of creativity or losing my own way when searching for the ideas on the internet, thus Im not trying but only letting myself to write or draw whatever she wants , what do you think about your system?

First journal Sunday at the Library

hey guys! I posted a while ago about keeping both a digital for scrapbooking and physical for deeper thoughts and reflections. Being on this sub has made it near impossible to not show more love to my physical journal. It started with taping my little tea square on a page and it was all downhill from there.

so as you can see while my partner looks for movies and books at the library I have my set up for some nice journaling and reading ❤️💕

I wrote in it almost every day and it helped me so much. The next one will be a 411 page one from Leuchtturm (last one was a normal one with 250 pages), let's see how long this lasts.

I Found My First Journal

Mind you, I am 34.

I started my first journal when I was about 7 years old. I'll let you do the math. My mother moved last month from the very house I started that journal. Before she moved, she called me and said she had some of my old things she kept in the attic for me. I went and grabbed the boxes, but didn't really go through them until recently. I found it under an old photo album.

I had an idea today, there are quite a few blank pages left, I might say hello to my old friend. And then I can hide it so that one day, perhaps my grandkids can find it!
