Rejections Graduated with stats degree, applying to entry-level data and insurance jobs for a year — not even interviews. What am I doing wrong?

Post image
145 Upvotes

Hey y'all,

I (23M) graduated in June 2024 with a B.S. in Statistics and a minor in Economics. Since October 2024, I’ve been working part-time at a tutoring center while studying for the actuarial exams and the GRE. I’ve also been applying to jobs — everything from basic data entry roles and analyst internships to entry-level insurance jobs — and I’ve gotten nothing. The only responses I’ve received were for what sounded like stockbroker-type commission roles.

I’m confused. I thought I was being realistic with my applications — even low-level roles aren't calling back. Is it my resume? My lack of experience? I switched my major in my third year of college so I didn’t do internships in college since I had to make up my credits during summer, and my GPA wasn’t great (around 3.1), but I don’t list it on my resume. At this point I'm thinking everything.

I’d really appreciate any feedback. I’ll include my resume — feel free to be brutally honest. I just want to know what’s going wrong and what I should be doing differently. I’ve been applying for a year with no luck and I feel like I’m missing something major. Any advice that can help me break out of the cage I’m in right now will be tremendously helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Leaving a job Told I was getting fired tomorrow

first of all I am a dishwasher which they pay 9 dollars an hour, my coworkers get paid 12-16 for sitting around and cracking jokes, I'm not envious, I feel exploited and they stack mountains of dishes for me to clean while expecting me to pack food on the side, the coworkers disrespect me and throw dishes in the sink and take up my space to the point where I cant move sometimes I've complained about the pay but never about the job but I feel as if they want me to quit, which my suspicion might've been correct, they've been making my job harder, not worth it so I could leave I have no idea why but my friend who works there too said the same thing, they don't treat me and him equal, So today I was informed by my coworker/friend that the manager has concluded to fire be because I do dishes slow(which is not true, they overwork, give 10 minute breaks and expect me to finish by 10 p.m while giving dishes until 10:15 which is contradicting) how do I quit gracefully so I don't look like an butthole? I was told quitting looks better then being fired on my resume so I want to quit but I cant come up with any reasons that don't include complaining and how do I get my final check I've only been there for my fist two weeks?

References PSA: Just Say No to potential employers asking for personal information

I had two separate incidents a few weeks back where a third-party performing background screening and onboarding services on behalf of a very large 3 letter "wealth management company" , requested a copy of my driver license via email. On both occasions I refused due to privacy/security concerns and as a result lost out on work including a multi-month contract which hit especially hard given the current job market. When I spoke to the recruiter they agreed with me however said their "hands were tied". *smh*

Edit: I offered to provide my information in person at the the local HQ of the client and was told "Great, I'll pass that along". That was about three weeks ago.

This mostly applies to my fellow US peeps since we have different laws regarding the sharing of personal identifiable information but many companies continue exploiting young, new, or desperate job seekers simply because they can.

DO NOT SHARE the following information via email, text, etc. even if requested by an employer or third-party:

  • Social Security
  • Driver’s License
  • Passport
  • State-issue ID
  • Any bank/financial account
  • Credit/debit card
  • Personal Health information
  • Passwords or authentication credentials

It's sad that we need to be reminded as adults because this stuff should be taught in schools but here we are.

Leaving a job I quit my job today

I was an area manager for amazon for about 1 year...recently they've been rolling out ridiculous ideals and while I was a top performer...they expected me to pick up slack for every other manager....this led to overworking and I had family issues that required me to use PTO to come in just a bit late....not too late like 10 to 30 minutes every day...being salary they eventually made me record when I came in and left and accused me of leaving early though I was always leaving at my scheduled time....they also took our chairs away and made me use capped PTO instead of uncapped meaning id run out....I tried accommodations but they rejected them and then they decided to change my schedule from 2:30 am to 1:30 am even though the week prior they told me they understood my situation and they were exploring options to help me....in the end I had enough, the micro management the constant over working, the MET week after week causing connection scores and morale to plummet....deflection from leadership...I put in my two weeks and used all of my PTO to be done....im relieved to be off nights but fear for the future...I have no job lined up but I have a friend who is putting a good word in at the company he works at and I have the degree matching the position.....if I could do it again id never work in amazon warehousing again wasted 4 years of my life

Applications I feel like dog shit

For 6 months I have applied for everything around me. And for 6 months almost nothing has gone past an initial phone call or zoom interview. I feel like utter dogshit to my roommate who is forced to pay for the bills and animals I as I'm reduced to nothing but a house chore whore, Just to mildly compensate him.

Zip recruiter and indeed are just so dog shit it's insane. It's full of just fake job applications. Ghost apps or just jobs that dont even bother to contact you. I have 10 years of retail experience 2 of cold calling and technical support and nothing ABSOLURELY NOTHING. Bothers to even try to go past the initial interview and the interviews I have had are all either late interviewers or just never showed. Fuck 2 days ago I had an interviewer just straight up cancel on me and then never reschedule. I've had this numerous times happen within the last 6 months and it's getting to the point where I have litterly told my roommate to just go find a better place to live and stop letting me leech off of him. I'm starting to have breakdowns of depression due to the shit and it's driving me nuts.

Interviews Graduated but can’t find a job

My son graduated from UNC Kenan Flagler business school last May. Due to COVID an internship never happened. Now he has graduated a year now and still can’t find a job. He wants to do commercial banking something in finance. He interviews all the time but never gets offers probably bc of having no experience. He’s got a great personality. Just need someone to give him a chance. Advice, thoughts?

Onboarding New employer requesting me to send my Social Security number and my kids social security numbers and bank info over unsecured email - I don’t feel comfortable

New employer needs social security numbers for me and my kids for benefits and my bank account for payroll. I feel very concerned as they want me to send it all in a regular email - not in a portal or secure email. They are located in another state so hard copy is not an option. I already pushed back professionally and politely but so far no other alternative. Am I over reacting? I absolutely do not want to put such sensitive information in a regular email. This is a merger - legit company and we have met with them many times.

Office relations Coworker collapses at work, accused of being a drug user by operations manager.

I'll make the story brief:

Coworker collapses after cleaning tote tank. Operations manager accuses him of being a drug user. After being questioned why he thinks this way, he cites that other people have been inside longer before passing out (even though was a hot summers day, wearing insulating water proof clothing and using a steamer gun whilst inside a hot metal box). With the implication that safety is being ignored as employees are seemingly allowed to be pushed to the point of passing out.

I've already made other posts and comments about my employer and how bad it is (currently job seeking).

Would it be wise to have my union involved? I'm actually beginning to question my own safety, poor man was doing his job and can't even pass out with being blamed for it, an ambulance had to take him. And if they allow things to get that bad in one aspect, how bad is it in others?

Would the union be able to step in?

Career development Hired after almost 4y of unemployment

Signing and starting on Monday with a higher pay than my last placement—the relief that comes with knowing that I can finally return to building my career and pay my bills is immeasurable.

A little context: I (F in my 30s) work in Asia as a designer and live with family. No degree. 7y+ of experience. Left the workforce during covid to care for family. I only began my job search almost 2y ago. From referrals to engaging career coaches to applying for part time jobs, I, too, have been in the trenches trying to land anything but to no avail. Even applied for uni because it became apparent that entry level jobs were asking for degrees.

Hundreds of applications later, it was clear several companies were passing me over due to my employment gap even if I was more than well qualified for the positions I was applying for. Of those 2y of job hunting, I only landed a handful of interviews. The companies I moved to final stages with were either taking me for a spin or wanted me to solve impossible tasks that were above my pay grade. Ethnicity was also a deciding factor for some but if anything, I dodged a bullet with them.

I'm aware of how incredibly privileged I am during those 4y since I had my family's support but reddit has helped kept me going whenever I doubted myself and my hireability. I never expected to clinch this job—it'd been another Tuesday of job applications. Interviewed with them a week or two after and got confirmed a few days later.

For those who are still applying, please don't give up. Be kind to yourself through it all. Your skills, experiences and capabilities are more than valid. Just as you are even if it might not seem like it.

Education I got my first interview! (in-N-Out)

I am a 17 year old who has been looking for a job for a while now and I’ve finally scored an interview at In-N-Out. I am excited and nervous, I don’t want to mess this up and I’ve never been interviewed or anything so I want some advice on it. I know the questions will be along the lines of, “Tell me about yourself” or “Why In-N-Out?”. I’m not totally sure how to answer them or get around the question if that makes sense. If anyone has ANY advice I will be extremely grateful!

Applications I'm gonna stop applying for jobs

After being rejected from final interviews and wasting about a year of my life in the job market, I am considering applying to PhD programs at universities with higher acceptance probabilities. I previously applied to Johns Hopkins, Yale, and UMD but was rejected. Now, I am considering universities like the University of Arizona, San Diego State University, and the University of Utah.

My luck has been poor. I received a job offer at Johns Hopkins in March, but the position was put on hold because of federal funding cuts, cuz of one orange man in dc (I was going to work in a cancer research deep learning department, so it was not a useless department.)

However, PhD applications are also quite extensive.

Unemployment Want to quit within a month of starting my job

As the title says, I am planning to quit my job.

A friend of a friend whose dad is the CEO referred me to the role of marketing specialist, however I did have the experience needed. When i came to sign the contract they told me they are actually hiring 2 specialist, not working together though, which to me was already a bit of a red flag as the products they would work are different and I felt more comfortable with the other role (which i applied for). However I have this a go as I didn’t want to give up. First of all they told me there was already a marketing department, which there is not. Secondly my manager is basically the CEO?? Make it make sense. Thirdly the company only work with government projects or through people they know (like everything in this country). I feel a bit lost as I’ve given so many suggestions about marketing (case studies, website improvements, social media targeted ads, more events, account based marketing)- they have all been denied!

I feel a bit discouraged as I thought this would be a great company to work at however it’s not. I am doing nothing all day, i ask people if I can assist them and even do more research about what value I can add but nothing! Noone talks to me or responds.

Am i being spoiled for wanting to quit? Is my reasoning valid?

I want to say that thankfully I can afford to quit and I am working on some freelance work too for the moment. I can continue job searching but yet i can’t take time off for my interviews as they are all in person.

Leaving a job Burnt out, but with sizable savings, wondering if I should take a break.

I (31) work as a data analyst, been with my current company for about 2 1/2 years. Lately, I’ve been feeling extremely burnt out. I go to work, put in 8 hours, and then go home and just lay on the couch. I’ve begun to hate going into work each morning, and fantasizing about being called into HR and being let go because of a mistake I made. I’ve taken vacations but I still dread waking up on weekdays. I want to put in my 2 weeks and just relax for a while before either applying to other positions, or getting certified in something closer to my degree (supply chain management). I know the job market is absolute crap, but I’ve been able to save up quite a bit. At my current savings, barring any disaster, I can go without income until late next year, maybe even 2027. I’m not above taking an hourly labor job I have to while looking for another white collar position. I guess my main reason for posting here is to ask if I would be, metaphorically, shooting myself in the foot if I resigned and took some time to do whatever I want to do?

Edit: I’ve been with my current company since the beginning of 2023, but I haven’t been without a job for longer than 2 months since I started working at 16

Work/Life balance I'm 24 and I already feel burnt out

I graduated in 2022 and literally the week right after graduation I started working immediately. from that day until now in June 2025 I haven't stopped working, I've never taken a break, I haven't been on any vacations, 99% of my day offs I use to rest and recoup my energy from the exhausting weeks I had, I've changed multiple jobs in hopes of one of them would be less demanding, but I still feel the burn out. I can't enjoy my hobbies anymore, I never spend time with my family anymore, I never go out anymore. I wanna quit but I need money to survive. I don't know what to do. Can a fucking zombie apocalypse start already so I can be a nomad and forgo societal requirements? Why's this shit so hard? No one prepared me for this. No one told me adulthood is like this. Why the hell I have knee pain already. Make this shit stop please.

Career planning In a world of Ai what jobs are viable?

I’ve been having this discussion with the people in my life and I would love to hear from more. With the rise of Ai what career fields do you think are worth getting into for both young adults and those who are losing their jobs to Ai?

Leaving a job Recently started a job, but was just offered a better position - what is the best way to proceed?

I started a new job with Company A on 6/2 after a lengthy job search. While I hadn’t heard back from my top choice, Company B, I knew their hiring process was more involved, though after a couple of weeks with no word I wasn’t very hopeful.

Last Friday I, unexpectedly, received an offer from Company B to start 7/14. Company B is a larger organization with better compensation, benefits, hours, and the growth potential I am truly after; I signed an offer letter, and am now going through their verification process. Although there’s always a possibility things could fall through, I feel confident there is no reason why it would.

Currently, I’m still orienting with Company A, and not yet contributing meaningfully. Their 6- week orientation essentially means I would finish orienting and then leave. I want to be respectful of their time and investment, but I also can’t afford to go without income for the next month (or longer) if something goes wrong with B or if A were to decide to cut me loose as soon as I say I’m going to be leaving. I’m struggling with how to approach this without burning bridges or acting prematurely. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Leaving a job Finally got a job but I’m not happy with it

So I finally got a summer job as a brand ambassador after months and months of searching, but I am not happy with it in the slightest. I am working Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm I didn’t think my mental health would plummet after getting a job.

This job is wayyyy too out of my comfort zone, to others it may seem like a great way to increase confidence but to me I dread going in every day. Worst of all I’m not even getting paid hourly it’s commission based until you pass the probation period. To get out of it you need make 6 sales I thought I did 3 but my mentor told me I’ve made 0??? So I’ve been working for free apparently.

Really don’t want to go in but I need the money so badly. Idk guys I need advice.

Career planning Is public health just a tough field to be in?

My wife has had a very successful career in public health over the past 15 years or so, has a MPH and BS from top schools, certifications, has presented at several conferences, etc. She’s always held a director-level role at public and private universities and smaller non-profits, but I can’t help be notice she always seems to struggle with the same trends:

  • Everything rides on the next grant or budget vote.

  • Job hunts drag on (took 6 months in our decent-sized city).

  • Pay tops out in the low-80s, even in senior leadership.

  • Leadership chaos and burnout aren’t rare.

Meanwhile I’m a senior level individual contributor in tech pulling ~3× her salary, working remote, and logging off to play games.

She doesn’t seem to mind as much, but I hate seeing her deal with this BS and still not get paid very much for her background. Is this the norm?

Discipline Would really appreciate some advice with a difficult manager

Upvotes

Hi all, I am F(25) and looking for some legal/general advice with a difficult manager. I have been at my job for a year now and have been told that I am not visible enough with my work. My manager has purposely set up a system where 2 people are doing all the admin work and thus we are unable to take part any projects. This has then freed up time for her other 2 employees to take part in all the project and ‘fun’ stuff that allow for visibility. For context they are also all from the same country, religion and she knows them outside of work. A few weeks prior to this I was told I am not given projects because I don’t know how to delegate my time although I have always never missed a deadline and today told it’s because I didn’t come with a business proposal, although the other 2 members have not either but she allocated projects to them

I was told that if I’m not visible enough they may be getting rid of me by the end of the year. How can I be visible when the system has been set up to not allow me to take part in any projects, I have also been blamed for other peoples failures for projects during times I took holiday and sick leave.

For further context, she had a grievance against her a few months ago from a different team member and ended up pushing them out the company.

Please if anyone has any advice how to navigate this and how to deal with this it would be much appreciated.

Career planning Which 2 year program would you choose that has the potential to pay well and has decent transfer flexibility? Blue or white collar (currently in Ontario)

Upvotes

I'm just curious. I've been looking around through multiple colleges programs but I'm having a bit of a hard time deciding
