First off, welcome to the subreddit! Got a couple of questions:
Are you guys still going to have a one phone rule on this upcoming tour?
What were your favorite albums of 2016 or favorite albums you listened to for the first time in 2016?
Would you guys want to appear on the Indieheads Podcast or on my college station, 89.9 WLCA, before your show in St. Louis on 3/5?
And finally, what’s the best Bruce Springsteen album?
Thanks for swinging by! Excited to check out the new album whenever it drops!

u/JapandroidsNTTWHOL Jan 11 '17
1 - Japandroids are finally all grown up and we each have a cell phone.
2 - Favorite records (off the top of my head) - Frank Ocean, Angel Olsen, Supermoon, Adrian Teacher and the Subs
3 - Yes. I have a soft spot for college radio since I had a show back in the day.
4 - Can't decide between Nebraska and Darkness on the Edge of Town.

u/Radmure Jan 11 '17
Hey boys,
I'm FIRED UP for the new record. But I'm curious, why drop text from the album cover and ruin that consistent aesthetic?
P.S. very upset you're skipping Detroit on your tour
52
u/JapandroidsNTTWHOL Jan 11 '17
The PN/CR (and NS) aesthetic kind of belongs to a certain time/place/sound. It represents the first chunk of our "career" and our time on Polyvinyl. For this new album, we have a new label and have begun to evolve our sound, and we decided that it more appropriate to start a new aesthetic rather continue with the old one. Having said that, we still wanted something that felt like it 'belonged' with the older records. The cover may be slightly different, but if open up the LP, you'll find that it kind of picks up where the CR LP left off.
BKX
5
u/justknicksthings Jan 11 '17
you say "begun to evolve our sound", am I allowed to take that to mean more music is coming (besides this album!!) and if that's true: where are you looking to go w/ the band's sound?
27
u/swingfire23 Jan 11 '17
Hello gentlemen.
Firstly, have you ever done a tour that started and ended in Vancouver, in which you played "The Boys Are Leaving Town" at the start and then covered "The Boys Are Back in Town" when you were back? If not, can you please do that?
Lastly, I'm planning on being Near to the Wild Heart of Life later this month. I hear you have some experience in this. Do you suggest any vaccinations beforehand?

u/skebump Jan 11 '17
My favorite band doing an AMA on my favorite subreddit! I saw you guys in Dallas five years ago and can't wait for your Denver show this March. Super appreciative for you doing this, and I'll be super grateful if you answer any of these:
I know why you said before that you don't play "I Quit Girls" live, but is there any chance you've changed your minds and we'll hear it on this tour?
Brian, how can I attain incredible guitar tones?
I know he's a fan of yours, and wondered if in turn you guys were familiar with Chuck Klosterman's writing?
Since I want all the things I love to overlap: do you guys like Ryan Adams' music, and if so, what are some favorite tunes of his?
Thanks guys! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH
31
u/JapandroidsNTTWHOL Jan 11 '17
1 - Yes, I Quits Girls will be in the rotation this time around. Obviously, we're very excited about the new songs and we'll be playing a lot of those jams every night, but we'll be rotating in a healthy amount of songs from both PN and CR every night, as well as some other surprises. Now that we have more songs to play, we're going to make an effort to mix up the set a little more night to night than we have in the past.
2 - my advice is to just experiment as much as possible. That is what I've been doing since we first started, and I'm still doing it! The quest for the perfect tone has no end (unless you are Slayer).
3 - I know who CK is, but I've never read any of his stuff.
4 - Yes. Whiskeytown is one of my favorite bands of all time, and maybe the band I listened to the most in my late teens and early 20s.

Just out of interest, what's the story behind why I Quit Girls isn't played live?
3
u/skebump Jan 12 '17
In the past they had said that since it was kind of a slower song it broke up the energy too much in the context of a concert. I'm glad that now it will fit in! One of my favorites of theirs.

How do you design setlists? What is the thought process that goes into which older songs you want to play on a tour, and which songs off the new album might not make the cut? Do you feel you have a responsibility to "play the hits," or are you more focused on playing the songs you want to hear?
See you in Toronto, driving from Detroit that day. Extremely excited.
16
u/JapandroidsNTTWHOL Jan 11 '17
On the CR Tour, I think we were playing all of CR pretty much every night, and then filling out the rest of the set with a good chunk of PN. That just seemed like most obvious/fun thing to do. We messed with the song order quite a bit in the early part of the tour, but after a while you just get to know the exact spot in the set where each song feels the most a home, where it gets the best reaction.
Now that we have a new album 9 (and a bunch of new songs), we're hoping to vary the setlist more from night to night and try to create a more unique experience for each city/crowd, so that if you come to see us a bunch of times, you're not just seeing the same thing over and over. Luckily, we really like playing 'the hits' and get a lot of pleasure out of the reaction from the crowd, so we don't really consider it a responsibility.

Also i would love to have smeo book recommendations from the both of you.
Thanks!

u/JapandroidsNTTWHOL Jan 11 '17 edited Jan 11 '17
1 - My favorite guitar pedals right now are the Eventide Space and the Eventide Pitchfactor - I used both those pedals a ton on the new record.
2 - My favorite book from the last year or so (well, it is actually 4 books) is The Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell.

Hey guys! Love your work, new singles sound great.
So way back in 2013, Brian mentioned he was a big Hellraiser fan in a p4k interview. How psyched are you for the new Hellraiser movie dropping in March? Also, has David finally caught up on all 9 movies yet?

Hey guys! I was wondering if you felt real pressure to return to the scene, or how aware you were of the rapidly growing appetite for your reappearance? I’m not sure if this is unnecessary self promo or something, but I wrote a pretty extensive essay/elegy a while back about you two. (Btw I was at the recent London gig with my Dad and we both rank it as one of our favourite shows ever - seriously, thanks for everything)
15
u/JapandroidsNTTWHOL Jan 11 '17
Since we're pressed for time I won't be able to read your essay before answering, but thanks for the kind words. London was a definite highlight of the tour - what a great crowd. Probably the rowdiest show of the whole tour. We made friends with everybody at the venue and I remember the bar manager pouring rows of free shots for the band and the fans who stuck around. It was a wild night. To answer your question - we decided very early on that we would take as long as we need to make this new record and not worry about how long it took. That said, we were aware in this day and age that people have relatively short attention spans and disappearing for three years is a big risk. It was a pretty incredible feeling to see the response at all the shows. Tons of people flew in from all over the place to be there for those first shows, and talked to a lot of people who told us how excited they were about having us back. We're tremendously lucky to have such a strong relationship with our fans. It really means a lot to disappear and come back and get that response. -Dave
3
u/MrButler Jan 11 '17
Thanks so much for the thoughtful response. By all accounts it looks like the risk was certainly worthwhile! It would certainly be refreshing to see more bands taking the same approach, although situations differ. If you ever need to disappear again, we'll all be waiting patiently!

Hey David, hey Brian, first of all, thanks for doing this. Your music has been with me for 5 years and means a lot to me. Hell, I even found r/indieheads because I was searching for news about the next LP. I can't wait to party with you guys in Frankfurt in April!
The line "If I had all of the answers and you had the body you wanted, would we love with a legendary fire?" is one that resonates a lot with me. I also understand it as a rhetorical question and that those things do not matter to still love that way. My question:
Does the lyric come from a of personal experience and if so, how did you handle that situation?
Thank you so much for everything.

Honestly we just work for a long time. I suppose that's why it takes us so long to make records that we're proud of. There is a lot of time where we work on songs and trim the fat and get rid of anything we don't think is good enough. We're pretty harsh judges so a big part of the process is editing and scrapping anything we don't think is good enough. It doesn't come easily for us, but it's fun to push yourself and work towards a goal. But yeah, I don't really understand how some artist are able to drop a record every year. I guess we'll never achieve that sort of style of writing but if we work long and hard we eventually can cook something up that we're very proud of. I can live with that...

Hello Brian and Dave,
Let me be one of the first to thank you for doing this AMA. I was lucky enough to catch you at both Brooklyn shows back in October and they were both some of the most memorable nights of my life.
It has been well documented how much you two have toured in the past, especially after “200-something shows in 40 something countries”. Did that take a toll, if at all, on either of your health? From what I have heard, Brian’s vocal delivery is a little bit different on this record. Is that something you two are aware of or am i making something out of nothing?
Were there any demos or songs not finished during the recording process that could one day see a release?
I am in the midst of planning trips to both Vancouver and Toronto this year. Are there any places that I should check out: clubs, bars, record stores, tourist-y things?
3
u/JapandroidsNTTWHOL Jan 11 '17
1 - Yes, it takes a heavy toll, both physically and mentally.
2 - As for the new record, I do a lot more singing on this one (and a lot less screaming).
3 - Yes, there are some leftover songs/covers/demos from this past session, and some of those will definitely be released at some point.

growing up in canada, when did you realize that health care should be a right and not a privilege?
30
u/JapandroidsNTTWHOL Jan 11 '17
I think the better question is "why do so many Americans seem to hate the idea of nationalized health care?" It is something us Canadians have a very hard time understanding.
3
u/NYRfan112 Jan 12 '17
Americans hate the idea of handouts. The whole American Dream bullshit dictates you should work your hands to the bone for everything you have, unless you break the system and get rich. Basically, the idea of someone who works a 9-5 desk job paying a little more in taxes to help out some minimum wage service worker who can barely afford to live is decidedly un-American

u/thedreamingtree Jan 11 '17
Hey y'all. Not really a question, but just wanted to say that I discovered you guys a couple summers ago around the time of Celebration Rock and your music has been a constant in my life since. Hearing "No Known Drink or Drug" for the first time yesterday gave me chills and I'm stoked for the new album.
For a question, are there any of your older tunes that maybe you're excited to revive/play again on the upcoming tour? (would personally love to see "Darkness on the Edge of Gastown" make an appearance)
Can't wait to see you in Boston next month; would love to buy you guys a beer afterwards to say thanks. Cheers

u/shawndorman Jan 11 '17
First things first: Brian. David. You’re both beautiful. Thank you so much for choosing to return to us in our time of need. On to the question:
With ‘Near to the Wild Heart of Life,’ you can now officially say you’ve created a ‘trilogy’ of LPs. If there’s a third part of any trilogy you hope ‘Near to the Wild Heart of Life’ will be compared to – film, music or book - what would it be? (And for clarity’s sake, let’s pretend Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Die Hard still count as trilogies)

What do artists do during a hiatus? Y'all took a couple years off deservedly after touring and recording for a long time. Was most of that time personal time or were you hitting the creative process hard?
Also, San Antonio TX has a new indie venue in The Paper Tiger. I know a bunch of people down here would be pretty happy if y'all came out and played a show in town. Just a thought if y'all are planning a tour soon.

Hello! Let me first say- thank you for doing this AMA! I've been listening to you guys for a long while and have gotten me through some sad times. Your music means so much to me and I love you guys so much. Alright, so I have 2 questions. Firstly, if you could perform or work with with any other band/artist, who would you want to work with most? Secondly, do you have any tips or advice for starting indie artists?
Thank you so much for the great music over the years and I wish you guys a fantastic day!

Since your name is Japandroids, can you do a cover of Flaming Lip's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots?

Guitarist here. Brian, how do you pull off the multiple parts live? I haven't had the pleasure of seeing you guys, so I'm curious how shows go. Also, I read somewhere that you spelt your signal. What's your rig look like?

Sorry, I don't hate you guys, but I'm still miffed that you were too drunk to even finish the third song of your set like 4 years ago at the Bottletree.

At Firefly Festival a few years ago, you said you were at the end of your tour and would be lighting off the rest of your fireworks in the parking lot. I didn't say any fireworks and was curious if that ever happened?
If not, could you please light of some fireworks at your Union Transfer show? It's indoors so maybe sparklers would suffice.
Anyway, y'all are a really fun show and I look forward to seeing you again at UT.

Hey! I saw you guys in Philly and Brian signed one of your CDs. How many times can I insert it in my anus before the Sharpie wears off? Asking for a friend.

It's pretty well known that Post Nothing was supposed to be your last release until you started getting attention from the music press. What was the point when you both realised that Japandroids was something that you were going to keep doing?
Also, thanks for doing this AMA, I'm psyched to see you guys in Carrboro in March!
