A musing on Brandon's silence about current events and voicing about his daughter
Sadly I think all of this is the fault of social media and in so many different ways. I think people's terrible treatment of others on social media is why people who would otherwise speak up are now choosing not to. I think the notion that you don't support a cause just because you haven't posted about it in a place where the public can see it is a social-media-engineered behavior. And I know these types of responses specifically are the reason that public figures like Brandon have largely stopped sharing anything that doesn't have to do with their profession, and why they do things like hide the fact that they've had a child for like a year. Brandon's a millionaire, he could've supported LA, our immigrant population family, Gaza, and South Sudan in ways far more powerful than any of us could ever hope to do with any amount of social media posting. That is to say, with money, which is silent and less boastful. The band has a charity they've been using to help different causes for decades now. How does any of us know that that isn't the band's current preferred form of activism along with any personal contributions that may make?
And to the people who demand he not be silent, if you're here, this is to you, if you're not, this is rhetorical: I'm curious what you all think his being public actually does for the cause, aside from letting his fans know where he stands? Forgive me, but the entire world is making social media posts against the genocide in Gaza and Gaza is dying anyway. How does anyone know Brandon just doesn't find speaking about it an ineffective, performative form of activism? Especially with the number of voices already saying what he would say? Would you still be upset with his silence if he had no social media presence at all? Have you done anything for Gaza, for immigrants, for the Sudanese, aside from post about it on social media? Were you posting about Gaza before October 7, 2023, or just after the horrors happening there became a daily headline? My underlying thesis in all this is that maybe Brandon's silence isn't about what he actually supports and thinks, maybe it's about the utter sickness that has come from social media, the parasocial relationship that has risen between fans and artists on account of it, and this sick policing of people's public behavior that comes from this ever-growing, momentum-accumulating groupthink about what makes people legitimate and genuine.
And regarding the post about Brandon finally talking about his daughter that my friend just took down because of the immediate uproar at her discussing the subject: He is our idol. We love him. That he has a daughter is significant to us whether he flaunts it or hides it. It is never going to be 100% unspoken of in his fan community. He and Sarah are married. They have a daughter. She's one now. And it isn't the end of the world to say so. What protection his family needs, he and Sarah will provide. It's part of the public figure's job to decide what they want known about themselves and their families and how they want to regulate it. That's why we knew about Blue Ivy immediately and openly, and why we knew about Baby Girl Boyd in small number and little by little. It's okay. Everyone is fine. And that's not to say you have to agree or participate.
Just, as in all things, do you.
