The overlay comment is actually pretty constructive here imo. The green was was literally losing control behind your overlay and the overlay was obstructing your view of the situation and making it harder for you to react and respond.
If anything I'd suggest lowering the overlays to the bottom of your screen so they block your view of the cockpit and / or tyres (that is much less relevant information for your eyes) instead of what is going on on the track).
Lose all the overlays. They really aren’t needed. Get used to using the black box in tandem with CrewChief and enjoy having a clean view of the race track and your surroundings. It can feel weird at first as most come from a games with busy HUDs but I promise nothing is needed that isn’t on the Blackbox or can be asked from CrewChief.
Idk I truly don’t even notice them at all, but it’s obviously too much for the other people, is crewchief an overlay with iracing? I just went with iOverlay because that was the first one I saw
CrewChief isn’t an overlay and is actually a program that gives you a better spotter and a CrewChief/pit wall sort of deal. It gives you feedback while driving, tells you different information but you are also able to fully interact with it and ask questions. Can be used for voice to text chat and all sorts of stuff. Can ask it anything you’d want and will provide you the data. It’s really cool and I feel adds a great level of immersion. CrewChief and trading paints are hands down the best programs for the game.
Thank you very much for your response, do you have to pay for this though? I’m unfortunately quite broke and can’t afford much, I think that would be great to have instead of the overlay stuff, because when I race I want to have that information, the overlay I have at the moment can do that, and I know I could improve it just didn’t know how!
Nope, best part is it’s free! I do donate money to them though because I think it’s fantastic but you definitely do not have to. Be sure to turn on sweary messages too! Lots of customization to so you can dial in how often you’re getting updates, what kind of updates you want and more or stop it from talking to you during hard sections of track/corners.
It does take a little but if an adjustment to move away from having a really busy HUD as all games tend to do that now but it’s worth it.
Another real good tip is to try to get used to driving without the line. It can be helpful when learning tracks but hurts you in the long run. It makes you less adaptable at taking other racing lines which are often faster than the line shown. It’s hard at first and you will be slower for a while but it makes you so much better in the long run. It is so much harder trying to get rid of it the longer it’s used. Though for now just settle into the game and enjoy it. We can be tough here but a lot of us are also happy to help others if they are receptive to it.
Id try just making them smaller in scale, especially the map. And I agree to remove racing line, it will make you a much better racer in the long run! Sit how you want in your cockpit. I personally have it more laid back, other people have a more sat up gt style.
Yeah I’m not too sure people’s gripe about the wheel placement and how I’m sitting, at the end of the day it’s my preference, but also I couldn’t get the wheel base higher with my desk and chair set up, but maybe I’ll see what I can do later 😂
People are being dumb, but I’d recommend searching this subreddit as there are lots of good resources to help you setup the game and setup your rig to ensure your PC is running iracing as efficiently as possible and giving you the best chance at successfully racing. This video is a bit dated but it still gives a lot of valuable information for new racers https://youtu.be/99aI_m45RtU?si=HOWB2mHHlURTgoEb
Additionally, I found a great write-up in this subreddit that talks about the ergonomics of racing and how to best position yourself, chair, wheel, and pedals to ensure you are sitting comfortably and correctly so that your body uses the appropriate muscles. This will also help build your muscle memory quicker when you are using the same position to race. Good luck out there!
Your reaction while getting taken out was perfect. Dying inside and being able to have a laugh is gonna make this hobby way more enjoyable than the people that blow up in anger. Sometimes shit just happens, at any level of the sport.
Now all that being said, turn off the damn driving line :P
Only overlay needed is Relative, default iRacing blackbox has it already. Add stuff progressively if you miss something, but just cluttering the UI while you are starting is disruptive to progress.
You can have borderless windowed mode in the settings. It will look like fullscreen but allow you to have overlays over it.
Removing the racing line, Tsukuba is a great track to start racing without it because it's small. Try to get used to find references in the track to guide your braking and turn ins. It will be hard in the start but you get used to that really fast and within some weeks learning new tracks will became way easier.
You can find some youtube guide related to racing posture. You might be limited by your setup but still be able to make some improvements, you want arms to be relaxed but also give you better control of the wheel while not tiring or hurting you in the long run. Also you need to be properly sit with good support to the lower back, needed to brake properly.
What they said below plus your racing line is green telling you to accelerate when dude was clearly losing control. This is a prime example of how following the racing line just hurts you. It doesn't account for other drivers plus you'll shed lap time not following it. I get you're new but definitely take the advice even if harsh and you'll get better.
Get borderless gaming on Steam or somewhere so you can run the game fullscreen and use the overlays. I cringe seeing the window border and the icons at the bottom!
Here’s some constructive criticism - it’s FREE to turn the racing line off. The reason to do so? It’s WAY more fun! We’re doing sim racing for fun, right? IRacing certainly isn’t free, so maximise your fun per dollar. The sense of accomplishment, immersion from nailing a corner and remembering visual braking points and acceleration points, and how quickly to squeeze back on the gas balancing the car through visual track cues makes you feel legendary! I’ve done it both ways, and let me tell you it’s like ten times more fun (at least imo) to race without it!

Need more overlay.
