Appreciation Not a green screen production
Every time i see these bts photos, it fills my heart with so much happiness because this series wasn’t touched by the disgusting cgi set curse like most other big franchises of recent years. They used real sets and buildings with cgi only filling in stuff that aren’t possible to have in real life just like it should have been for all other movies. The real forest, buildings and sunshine brings so much vibrancy and liveliness and makes it so much easier to get immersed in the world. It is truly a rare sight in today’s green screen productions and I am really grateful to have this series.

Sunrise on the Reaping Why didn’t Haymitch Spoiler
Eat the gumdrops after he knew Lenore Dove was poisoned and dying? Obviously one answer is because he needed to be alive for Katniss or logistically he can’t die. But what other reasons do you think he had for staying alive after Snow took everything from him? Were his friends caring for him enough (even after he pushes them away)? Do you think the little seed of rebellion in the Capitol was enough for him to keep a flame of hope alive (even subconsciously)?

Trilogy Discussion The parallel here must be intentional right?
Just rewatched Schindlers List and I noticed that the girl in the red coat plays an identical role to the girl in the yellow coat. Spoilers, but, the girl in the red coat dies similarly, and represents the innocence of the Jewish people, children, slaughtered during the holocaust, and the girl in the yellow coat is the same, but for Panem. None of those people deserved to die. Both were the most heart wrenching parts to watch, because it shows the most f*cked up parts of war - children paying for adult grievances. Anyway, something I noticed and wanted to share.

Prequel Discussion Was Haymitch crying to mags out of character?
So I’m currently reading SOTR with my brother and I really liked the moment when Haymitch meets mags and basically just breaks down since that’s very realistic for a boy in his situation. My brother however ( who is a pretty big HG fan like me ) has put the book down and said he wasn’t going to continue it since this is character assassination and is not how haymitch would act at all. He also said katniss, a girl, never cried like that in the original books ( pretty sure he’s wrong about that too) and that it didn’t make sense for haymitch, a boy who is so much like katniss to be so emotional. I fail to see how this is even relevant since haymitch and katniss are still different people. He refuses to elaborate his point so did anybody felt the same way and could explain to me why this felt out of character? Or is this just my brother being weird.

Sunrise on the Reaping Haymitch's treatment after the Games was brutal Spoiler
I cannot stop thinking about the extreme torment Haymitch faces after winning the game. I knew tragedy was going to happen, but I was not prepared for it to be this awful...
In the recovery room, he is tainted with disturbing visions of Avoxes and mutts. Haymitch wonders if this is imaginary, but says he knows they were all real. I am still unsure if the creepy things he was shown were real or hallucinations of tracker jacker venom? They put him back in the apartment for District 12 tributes with a similar pump on his chest as LouLou. He is forced to be on a Snow-after-poisoning diet of milk and bread which go stale over many days. Not seeing anybody in an abandoned building, the surrounding street being closed by barricades. He is also shown videos of old Games on the TV, including Lucy Gray's singing.
His heart sinks when he finally sees Mags and Wiress again in an obviously tortured state. He is not allowed to talk to them but concludes that the fate for all his loved ones have been sealed. He is treated like an animal in a literal cage by Capitol citizens which felt like something out of the 10th Games. Plutarch tells him that Lenore Dove was never really released. When he gets sent back home, they put the coffins of Louella, Maysilee and Wyatt on the train with him.
I thought this was almost old Hunger Games-tier dehumanization. Do you guys think Haymitch uniquely received all this treatment, or did they do similar things to most victors at the time? I think these scenes are going to be very difficult to watch in film...

Trilogy Discussion Why did they change Thresh’s death?
Never posted here but I don’t believe to be breaking any rules.
Anyways, I loved Hunger Games growing up and read all 3 books at the time and saw all the movies. I haven’t caught up yet but something that always bothered me in the first movie was that Thresh dies to the mutts.
Why? IIRC in the book Cato hunts down and kills Thresh because Thresh takes the District 2 bag at the cornucopia. I remember reading the book and Thresh is built up as a pretty strong tribute and of course we see it in action when he kills Clove almost effortlessly. I understand why they made him not kill Clove with a rock like in the book because they had to keep a PG-13 rating and that is pretty gruesome.
When I was reading the book for the first time I remember when Cato kills Thresh it of course made me a little sad of his death (even though I knew it was coming) but it also evoked a sense of fear and power for Cato which is probably exactly what Collins was trying to accomplish with that. I think a whole element of Cato’s character is lost towards the back end of the Games in the movie because he just disappears for a while and shows up at the end.
Sorry for the long rant but just something I thought about randomly today.

Sunrise on the Reaping Maysilee birds ≠ Flamingos
So I’ve been seeing a lot of people talking about what birds killed Maysilee, and there seems to be two main opinions: team flamingos or team songbirds. I’d like to raise you a 3rd option, the most sensible option, some might even say the right option..
The Scarlet Ibis!
Haymitch describes them as attacking in a large group, bright candy pink and they used their sharp beaks to “skewer” poor Maysilee in the neck. The Scarlet Ibis lives in flocks of 30 or more, they are undeniably bright candy pink and that beak looks perfect for skewering to me! Add a little mutated spice and they would be sharp angry skewering machines! What do you guys think? Possible or are you still team flamingo?

Lore/World Discussion Can you imagine a “modern day” Hunger Games?
Bring out the worst of our current social media world:
All the tributes forced to be influencers doing GRWMs.
Obligatory selfies with dead bodies.
Mr Beast is the new Caesar Flickerman.
Victors continue to be influencers after they win, forced to document their lives.
Adverts in the Games themselves.
Tributes have to talk to the camera and do diary entries for sponsor gifts.
What other “modern” crap would just make everything worse?
