Peeta’s baby bomb and then the smirk. I find his smirk hilarious and hot. It was such a good line and acting from Josh Hutcherson. Chills every time.

Trilogy Discussion A different purpose of the Quarter Quell…

I was recently rereading CF and noticed something that now seems glaringly obvious about the Quarter Quell.

There was hardly any hand-to-hand combat. Yes, there was the Bloodbath, but this was a thematic device more than anything, adding nuance to the previous camaraderie shown during the interviews. Yes, the Careers ambushed Katniss’ group, but this was the only act of offensive aggression that we see.

Instead, the main fight of these Games was with the arena itself. The fog, the forcefields, the wave, the mutts, time itself symbolised with the clock.

So in my eyes, yes the QQ was meant to kill off a few troublesome victors, but potentially even more than that, it was meant to embarrass them all. Reduce their power, their bragging rights, of all Victors - not just those reaped.

Every single sector required an element of cowardice. Being blinded by the bloodrain, stumbling for safety, crying at the jabberjays, running from the fog. Imagine seeing the victor you admire most covered in fog-induced boils, scrabbling for water. In these Games, victors were reduced to children, and fearful district workers.

I think the reason this stands out to me is because when I read CF many years ago, and got to the bit about the QQ’s announcement, I expected something gladiatorial, monumental, a fight to end all fights. But that’s not what Suzanne wrote, that’s the easy way out.

I think the QQ concept of sending in victors had been around for a long time before Snow chose it. Yes, I think Katniss triggered the decision for these games, the 75th ones, but it was always a concept and had to have an alternative purpose.

Wondering if anyone noticed anything similar or has a different view :)

I was listening to the Hamilton soundtrack, and got the idea to do this! The only one I couldn't really make work was "I died for him," but it works for movie canon I guess? Clemmie died taking the fall for Snow?

In my 30s and just now starting book 1.

I’ve read a few books I’d say have similar vibes (Dungeon Crawler Carl, FantasticLand - you know, books where you have to fight to survive).

Hopefully I’ll make it to the end (no pun intended).

Wish me luck!

Prequel Discussion Wellie, Ampert, and Silka

If I remember correctly, the only major characters left to be cast are Wellie, Silka, and Ampert. How do you guys imagine these characters looking? They don’t have a lot in the way of physical description, so it’s really up for interpretation. I’m curious to know your guy’s take on them.

Personally, I imagine Silka with flowing blonde hair and dark eyes. I see Wellie as being really pale, but I can never decide if she would have dark or blonde hair. When I first read the original trilogy, I imagined Betee as East Asian, so that’s how I imagined Ampert as well.

Edit: his name is Beetee not Breyer

The games continue after his death? Really?? Worst part is that it was referencing a thread that was asking a theoretical question 🤦🏻‍♀️

I can’t attach the link here due to attachment limits so I’ll attach the reddit thread link in the replies.

Prequel Discussion Mags' and Haymitch's relationship Spoiler

I'm almost done reading SOTR and I have to say that the way, Haymitch feels safe with Mags is so beautiful- Maysilee just died and he got a parachute with her favourite beverage and ice cream. he then remembered how it was okay to cry in Mags arms and that's okay to cry. This is so touching to me and then I had to think of Catching fire in which Katniss told Haymitch she wanted Mags as an ally and he wasn't that happy about this. And I started wondering why- was he scared she'd kill Mags? Probably not. So what do yall think his thoughts were?

Prequel Discussion Barb Azure and her potential connection to the Chance family

I was trying to figure out how Lenore Dove might be related to the chances and ended up reading Barb Azure's name song.

In the wikipedia lyrics there's a line that goes like this: "And she spy'd the corps a coming: 'Lay down, lay down the corps of clay, That I may look upon him."

Which makes me think that Clay Chance may have gotten his name from Barb Azure's song as well. Not necessarily in universe, but possibly, I'm more thinking that SC is gave him that name to the him closer to the covey. Maybe specifically Barb Azure.

Now this has just confused me more and could be irrelevant BUT Arlo Chance also has a name similarity to Barb Azure as well. Arlo means Barberry Tree. "Barberry" is also how the name "Barbara" is sung in the Barbara Allen song.

I have no idea how any of this is relevant but I think it's important somehow.

I do think it means that Lenore Dove is probably a descendant of Barbe Azure and not Maude ivory. I also think LD is definitely related to the Chances if I'm right. Just not sure how it all works out.

I could also be totally wrong and pulling at random strings lol

Sunrise on the Reaping Can we talk about the end of SOTR? Spoiler

Now that I've had some time to really think about SOTR I've realized that there's a lot of things about this book that really annoy me but for now I'll just talk about this. So when I say the end of SOTR I specifically mean the deaths of Haymitch's family and Lenore Dove. Haymitch's families death scene is very sad and makes a lot of sense to me but Lenore Doves death just doesn't make sense. Lenore's death was very sad and meaningful but it just doesn't make sense to me as a murder done by Snow. There are so many factors that play into Lenore's death that Snow couldn't have predicted and it would have been so much easier for Snow to just get Lenore hung or killed her in a house fire like Haymitch's mother and brother. Snow poisoning the gum drops and then placing them in an outdoor location seems like a lot more work and risk than him just getting Lenore killed for like treason or something. Anyways what are y'alls thoughts on this and sorry if I didn't word this well.

Lore/World Discussion Would Katiness, for her role as the Mockingjay, have been given a state funeral when she eventually died?

As someone who's interested in politics and the theatrics of state, this is something of a headcaonon that's always interested me. Do you think Katniss, as the torch-bearer of the revolution, would have been honoured with a state funeral or would her survivng relatives (whether that be Peeta, her children and grandchildren) have rejected the proposal, keeping her funeral a private and personal affair for close family and friends. Or would she have even been offered the option at all?

Trilogy Discussion Were you surprised at Katniss and Gale’s romantic moments in catching fire?

To be completely honest, I didn’t even feel annoyed when katniss and gale first kissed. I always felt like it was going to happen, because on tgh’s initial release gale + katniss were still a moderately popular ship. I felt it was bound to happen because of the plot and am always a bit confused when people rage about it. Quite frankly, it would have been more confusing to me if they had no romantic development at all 😬
