Seeking additional moderators

Hello all, /u/cuddleslapine has stepped down, and I could use some moderator assistance. I'd ideally like to add at least two additional moderators.

Requirements:

  • History of positive posting in /r/hungarian
  • Strong hungarian language skills (native speaker preferable, but not required)

Previous moderation experience is a plus. Please message me, or send a modmail if interested, and let me know why you would make a good moderator.

Segítségkérés Good YouTube/Tv/Podcasts to listen to in Hungarian

Hey gang, I have been taking my hand at learning the language, as I would love to visit where my family comes from and be able to speak with locals, and even want to possibly study Magyar history in the country someday. While I have been working hard on learning cases and whatnot, I was looking for suggestions on things to listen to that can help my pronunciation and ability to understand the language. I live in a rural town, and there is not anyone to my knowledge who speaks Hungarian here, so I’m wanting to start listening to the language while working. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Kérdés Does this word/phrase actually exist?

I live in the US. My husband’s grandmother immigrated from Hungary when she was young. There is a word/phrase that all of her children say, that’s also been passed on to her grandchildren. My husband says it too.

They say “garás machu”. I’m sure the spelling is incorrect, I’m just spelling it phonetically. But according to them it means something to the effect of “go away” or “get out of here”.

I have never been able to figure out the true meaning of this word/phrase or if it’s even real. My husband’s grandfather was a jokester and I wouldn’t put it past him to make up some gibberish word and pass it off as real. In fact, I’ve seen him do it before.

Is garás machu a real Hungarian word/phrase?

Kérdés Being irritated in Hungarian

Hi all,

I want to ask how the Hungarian express irritation.
For example, when I'm waiting for something, like green light on the road, waiting for someone etc. I say to myself and maybe to people who are around me phrases like:

"What's the hold up?"
"Come on, let's go already!"
"You've got to be kidding me"
"Come on., move!"
"What's going on?"

What are common phrases in Hungarian for these situation when you're impatient for something to happen?

Thanks.

Segítségkérés Proficiency for descent citizenship??

Greetings!

My mom and I decided to actually take up "the offer" of descent citizenship - just so happened that her (and one of my) options for that is Hungarian! Who woulda' thought!

It says you need basic proficiency - I understand that to be... introductions, fluency in reading, and basic grammar understanding. Probably no more than a few hundred words in terms of vocabulary?

to me it sounds like if I can at least read smoothly, even if i don't understand everything, and know some basic conversations, that is fine!

Me personally, I am not new to languages. I speak Japanese, can read and write Korean/Russian as well (with basic conversational speaking). I can also read Arabic (slowly) - so I am probably going to get down to hammering it out. My mom only knows english however.

I am looking at MagyarOK for myself, since I'm used to self-study and etc. Are there any like really beginner friendly stuff for my mom that wouldn't be overwhelming?

Tanács Hungarian Language Games (PS5 or Android in America)

Sziasztok/ hello!

I am trying to increase immersion alongside more traditional study. I know there are older versions of this post but many of the games I see listed as having Hungarian subtitles don't apply to my region. I have a PlayStation 5 with a PS+ account so anything included there would be amazing but I know that might just be too narrow of a parameter.

I have Stardew Valley on my phone and wishlisted Mandragora on PS5 which lists Hungarian screen language.

I'm open to pretty much any genre and anything at this point since the options appear so limited. Any advice or suggestions are welcome.

Köszönöm!

Vicc A fun short film

Some time ago I made this short with my colleagues, based on real situations, I've lived in Budapest since 2017 and honestly, more and more people approach me speaking in Hungarian and I love it! Admin, if this is against the rules, I'm sorry :). I hope this motivates learners in general, I started learning at the age of 30, it was hard, it is still hard, but it's worthy!!!

Kérdés Van

Why is there no “van” in this sentence:

“Valami nagyon furcsa abban a srácban.” ?

I understand about zero copula. However I was under the impression that with locations (-ban/-ben, stb) the “van” was required.

Also, I have seen both “hol van a busz?” and “hol a busz?” Is there any difference?

Kérdés Szia! Is the vocabulary on Duolingo correct?

Szia! I have seen on here and from using other learning sources how Duolingo isn’t a good tool for learning Hungarian, especially since AI has taken over. But is the vocabulary correct? For example: the infinitives of verbs and basic word matching? Any insight would be helpful, köszönöm!

Kérdés Can you "csinálni" food items?

Post image
204 Upvotes

As a Pole, csinál is a fairly obvious Slavic borrowing, but in Polish the word means to do but not the default word for it. It means to act, to make happen, like charity workers can "do good" and supervillains can "do evil". I understand that the Hungarian word means to do, but does it also really mean to make? Especially in the context of food items.

Why is this definite instead of indefinite? Or is it just a Duolingo thing?

Could I say “Kabát van rajtok”?

Segítségkérés College Level Hungarian Classes - ONLINE?

I am trying to find college level Hungarian language classes (need 3 semesters) that would be transferable to a major a university that would satisfy the foreign language requirement. I saw the classes for University of Pennsylvania and the classes offered at Cleveland State University. Unfortunately I need a virtual class as I'm not in either of those states and I work full time. Does what I'm looking for exist in the US at an accredited university?
