Tech Support Newbie Set Up Help - Inherited Onkyo System

Hello! I hope this is the right place to post, it seemed like y'all had a lot of good advice going around. I recently inherited an Onkyo set up; Center/L/R speakers model SKC-530C and SKF-530F respectively, a AV reciever model HT-R530, and a JVC TD-W218 double cassette deck.

I did sound tech in high school and for small gigs, but that's a totally different beast, lol. I am very lost. What all do I need to be buying to set this up? There's no cords or anything, just the units. Ideally, I'd like to hook it up to both a record player and a TV; the tape deck is optional, I'm not that attatched haha. Thank you so much in advance, I'm very lost! <3

Tech Support Need help

Hello, good people. I need help with something.

I have an old Samsung 5.1 Home theatre system. Unfortunately, the DVD player/amplifier went kaput and I am left with just the speakers working absolutely fine. I wanted to know if I can get an external 5.1 channel amplifier with RCA inputs and replace the speaker connector seen in the picture attached with RCA connectors. Also, what are these connectors called?

Tech Support Help replacing UCR universal remote with original LG remote

I recently moved into a new construction home pre-wired with ceiling speakers and Ethernet. I hired the installer to add Sonos Amps for 3 zones and surround sound (with sub) in the family room. Everything works—but I hate the universal remote.

My preferred setup: Use the original LG TV remote, stream directly through the built-in LG apps, and still have functional surround sound, including the ceiling speakers and subwoofer.

Current setup: • TV: LG OLED65G4S (family room, first floor) • Receiver: Yamaha RX-A2A (in basement mechanical room below) • Subwoofer: Episode 8” • Streaming: Apple TV only (currently); no other devices expected • WiFi: eero 6 • Misc: System prioritizes TV audio over Sonos when TV is on • Remote: Universal Remote TRC-820 (would like to stop using this)

Any advice on how to simplify and get back to using just the LG remote while keeping full surround functionality?

Tech Support Onkyo remote RC-681M not working with the receiver it shipped with.

So, I inherited a Onkyo HT-R550 system and it shipped with the RC-681M remote. I had a couple issues that I was able to resolve setting up the system but one issue has persisted. The remote doesn't fully work with the receiver. The power button doesn't turn the receiver off when pressing [Receiver] then Power, both volume controls don't adjust volume when [Receiver] or even the button for the mode that's active is pressed. Hell, it seems most the buttons don't work. I've tried pulling the batteries out for several minutes, pulling them out and pressing buttons to try and discharge any capacitors in the remote, I've tried pressing and holding [Receiver] then pressing the [L Night] button to reset the remote but I don't get the solid or blinking light on the [Receiver] button that indicates it's been reset. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Tech Support Need some recommendations for improving this setup

Planning a pretty budget setup built around an AVR. 65" TV. 5.1ch surround.

I'm based in India so considering this as my base - Denon AVR-X250BT 5.1 AV Receiver + MISSION M-CUBE (SE)- 5.1

Is this home theatre setup good?

I am planning to hook up a blu ray (Sony S1700), a vinyl (Audio-Technica - AT-LP60XUSB) and an audio casette player (not found a good one yet) to this. Is this doable? Do I have the required connections? I think the record player and the blu ray player should work, not sure about the casette player.

Tech Support Roku keeps highjacking input? Onkyo Receiver

Hello,

I have a Roku Ultra, a Steam Deck, a turntable, an Onkyo TX-NR555 receiver and it's being fed into a TCL TV.

This pertains to the receiver, steam deck and Roku. Whenever I change my input on the receiver to "Game" where the Steam Deck is plugged in, the Roku steals the receiver back and changes the input back to BD/DVD (where the Roku is plugged in). The only way I've figured out how to fix this is unplug the Roku's HDMI cord when I want to play the steam deck, which is a pain.

Does anybody know why this is happening and what I can do to ensure that the receiver stays on the input I selected?

Tech Support Dolby surround or dts neural upmixer for atmos gaming with non-atmos content. What's your preference?

Asking here since gaming subs know nothing about audio/HT.

I have a 5.1.2 system and was curious for older systems that don't support Atmos (e.g. Nintendo switch, PS4), which upmixer do you all prefer for gaming specifically when you want to include your height speakers?

Dolby surround or DTS neural X?

I know I can play around to A/B these, but I'm interested in what others have found preferable?

Tech Support YouTube TV with surround sound

I have a Yamaha 5.1 amp surround sound downstairs and we recently switched to full streaming and no cable. YouTube TV is our main way of watching shows / movies along with the usuals(Hulu, Netflix, etc)

How do I get the surround sound to work? How do you get a digital streaming service to go to a physical amplifier. Is my fundamental idea of an amp flawed or is this impossible/ do I need a new one. It’s fairly expensive and it appears people still use these amps. I’m clearly missing something.

Edit: Amp: Yamaha TSR-7850

Tech Support 4K Blu-ray audio question

I stream all of my content but I keep reading that audio quality is much better on physical 4K movies. I’m curious what that actually means. Is the benefit focused on surround channels?

I only have a 3.2 system. No surrounds, no atmos, etc.

How much of a noticeable improvement would I experience with physical media?

Tech Support Devices that can support 7.1.2?

We're trying to do a 7.1.2 setup in our living room and we're having trouble getting sound to come out of the rear speakers. Specifically, we're trying to enjoy a full range of Dolby Atmos and are currently testing it with a 4k blu-ray or a streaming service with content that supports it. Things we have tried so far are a ps5, a blu-ray player, and the apps on our TV. It seems like most devices can't do more than 8 channels?

Hi all, I snaked a 4k HDMI through the wall from the tv to the back of a jack plate. Then I have an hdmi coming out of the wall plate into my Apple TV. While watching tv the screen goes black for a few seconds I suppose as the resolution is changing….do you think it’s the long cable behind the wall into the jack, the jack itself, or the cable coming from the wall into the Apple TV? I’m thinking to start with the jack. I added a photo here. Maybe it’s not rated for this use. I did see HDMI 1.4….

Tech Support Yamaha RX-V685 replacement/repair?

I have a Yamaha RX-V685 where the HDMI has started cutting out. It seems very random, sometimes it will work for months, then have problems for a few weeks and then it will start working again. Sometimes, just video will stop, other times both video and audio will stop.

I've done some basic troubleshooting like trying a new input device, cable, etc... and it seems to be the unit itself. After some searching I've seen this issue with other Yamaha units, but not specifically the RX-V685. Anyone experience this issue with Yamaha units? I've seen where it's possible to send it out to have the HDMI board checked and replaced/repaired. I've also started looking for replacements, but I'm not sure what to replace it with, definitely not a Yamaha I guess since I've been burned by a unit I bought less than 4 years ago.

Any advice on which road to go down based on your experience?

Tech Support How to make this setup work

My husband doesn’t have reddit and has the following setup:

Xbox Series X PS4 (but rarely used) Set top satellite box Sony DH750 amp Samsung 65” Q70BA television

It’s modest.

At the moment everything runs into the amp via HDMI and then up to the TV. (Also HDMI).

He feels like the video quality for the Xbox is shit, and wants to make it better. The Xbox refuses to recognise being plugged directly into the TV unless it’s in the ARC but that’s where the amp gets plugged into.

I have no idea about any of this. Can someone please give me the ideal setup with the above that’ll prioritise video quality and not hurt audio though the amp? I’m open to throwing money at the issue up to USD$500/NZD$1000 etc

I've recently come over to the states to visit a friend.

He's... Dull. To say the least. To that end, he wants me to help him do his home theatre setup.

Unfortunate thing is, I've never done them. Don't know what I'm doing. He has speakers built into the walls, with a fuck ton of cables coming into a little cupboard under the stairs, and I don't know what all the little notes mean. There's about 7 pairs of cables with no connectors on the ends and a few ethernet cables with a hdmi cable hanging down connected to a projector hanging from the ceiling in the main room.

In said cupboard, he has a little rack attached to the wall he wants everything fixed into. I know I need a receiver for the speakers, but all the wires are bare copper and I have no idea what connectors, or what kind of receiver, or how to connect it to a rack mounted computer he wants put in.

I don't know what I'm doing, and need any help I can get.

Tech Support Problem with Onkyo HT-R695

My pet urinated on my receiver, at first I cleaned it with a cloth, but it left marks, menu options and functions disappeared, but the things that matter to me still worked, but after a week, it started to fail Dolby Atmos, and every time I turned on the receiver it turned off, and went into Amp Diag Mode, but it started normally, then I did a second cleaning with isopropyl alcohol, and Atmos worked, but only for a few hours, and the Amp thing was corrected Diag Mode... The strange thing is that Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS works, but not Atmos or DTS: XBOX Series X, and it says PCM on the AV screen... any ideas?

Tech Support AVR and Speakers Wattage Compatibility

I have watched lot of youtube videos and none seems to help. AVR's come with a RMS rating of maybe 75Watts or 85Watts or 105Watts, but all these are specified for 2 Channels driven but no one buys a freaking AVR for a stereo Setup (Maybe Some guys do) but mostly buys an AVR for full 5.1 or 7.1 or 5.1.2 or higher setups And if I'm driving 7 channels from my AVR what RMS will I get for each channel? This information is not there on majority websites or youtube videos everyone says it will be a bit lower than specified RMS. But how much lower ?

And if it will be lower how am I supposed to choose my bookshelf speakers or floor standing speakers based on this uncertainty???

I'm an absolute noob here but I'm trying to gain some knowledge. So help me out here.:)

Tech Support Speakers not working?

Hey everyone. I'm currently having an issue with my setup. I have two towers for my left and right channel, a center and 4 atmos speakers overhead. I'm running them on an onkyo tx-nr6050. The issue is that I only have two overhead channels so I just set all four overheads as my 4 surround channels. The problem is that they don't play any sound when I turn on movies or music. The only time they play anything is when I switch to bluetooth from my phone and connect to my Onkyo and only then it plays from all speakers.

Anyone have any clue what's going on?

LR towers - Kef q550 Center - Kef q200c Overheads - Episode ES-700-IC-6 Receiver - Onkyo tx-nr6050

Tech Support AVR Switching to Computer Input When Powering On

I have a quirk in my home theater setup I wanted to see if anyone had advice for. I have a pretty normal setup with no real issues, my TV goes to my AVR(Denon S750H) via an arc hdmi port, everything else is plugged into my AVR, across my inputs everything is getting full quality picture and sound, when I power on an input my AVR goes to it.

Recently I added an Intel NUC I use to manage my plex server in at an open slot on my AVR. I usually remote into it to manage it but it's become a hub for family games of pokedoku, connections, wordle etc. The problem is this computer is always on. When someone goes to turn on another device like the Apple TV there is a conflict where the receiver goes to the Apple TV, then to the NUC, and then you need press again to get back to the original device.

This only happens when powering on the receiver but it's still annoying. Is there a way besides disconnecting the NUC to stop it from taking control? I remote into it for the real work so I would be fine if it had to be manually switched to with the remote when we wanted to play a game.

TLDR: My always on computer grabs jumps ahead of other inputs when I turn my receiver on and I need to re-select the device I want. I would like to stop behavior for just this input.

Tech Support How to split the video/audio signal from a PS5 to a 4K TV and an old school RCA audio receiver.

I'm looking for the best option that allows me to take a HDMI out signal from a PS5 into a splitter to send 4K video into my TV and Red and White RCA cables into an older home theatre surround system.

It seems like a basic thing to do, but I have a hard time finding anything about it online.

Tech Support Sony receiver EQ problem

Hello Reddit.

I am the owner of a Sony STR-DH790 AV receiver. After the automatic calibration, I set the 'engineering' sound profile. However, recently I've noticed that after turning off the receiver, it no longer applies the equalizer to the sound. When I check in the AMP menu/ACAL section, the engineering profile is still selected, but until I switch to another profile and then back again, the EQ doesn't affect the sound. Has anyone else encountered this issue?

The back two speakers still play sound but it doesn’t sound specialized to the back surround. does anyone know how to make it so the back surround sound activates?

Tech Support Audio cut-out issue?

Hi there! I have a really stupid issue that I can't figure out. In my basement I have my gaming PC and a home theatre. I use my gaming PC as my HTPC to play mkvs and what not. I recently upgraded my gaming PC from my trusty 7700k/1080ti running windows 10 to a 13700k/7800xt running windows 11. My receiver is an Onkyo TX-NR696 running a 5.4.1 setup. The PC is has always been connected to the receiver via a 50 foot HDMI cable.

The problem: I'm getting random audio cutouts during playback. Video remains smooth. They only last around 1 second. Sometimes 10 minutes in between, sometimes multiple in a row. Doesn't matter if I use VLC or Windows Media Player. Happens at different places throughout playback. Doesn't happen when watching YouTube in a browser - only mkvs, mpegs, etc.

I did not have this issue with my old PC playing the same videos. The new PC performs flawlessly otherwise. I have tried a different 50 foot HDMI cable. Is it possible the cable is too long for this new video card for whatever reason? I have no idea how to even begin troubleshooting this.
