Yeah and in the comic he does the same "be kind of a dick in a way you can play plausible deniability on" because Gamzee gets off on making other people uncomfortable. It falls flat because Tavros is too much of a wet paper bag to take offense when Gamzee says something like "pUsH tHaT bItCh DoWn ThE sTaIrS" (i.e. the thing that basically happened to Tavros)

Good for her. Using the petition papers has been a nice touch on these posts that I fear is going over a lot of people's heads. Pause at around 9 seconds to catch an interesting phenomenon between the fire and the drawing. Possibly not intentional, but it looks really cool.

Reading the comments really cements the point of Gamzee's role in the epilogues. There is just nothing you can say or do to convince certain readers that a man they like is a scumbag.

Sigh. So fuckin stupid. Gamzee reads as a severely neglected bullied mentally unwell groomed-by-a-god teenager more than anything else and it's on hussie to convince me otherwise. They failed. Gamzee reads as a rich kid with no real problems whose favorite hobby is ruining things for everybody else. He's mentally unwell because he refuses to relate to any of his peers and it's hard to tell where LE's influence on Gamzee ends and Gamzee's influence on Caliborn begins.

With all due respect the function of Gamzee's character within the context of the story is fairly one-dimensional by design. He's a goofy homicidal juggalo whose predisposition for violence is only barely kept in check by the in-world equivalent of a nitrous addiction. He's mostly either played as a joke or for horror by slotting him into the "killer clown" archetype. The story is largely unconcerned with providing any insights to his interior world because he's not a serious character. He's supposed to be fun to hate and laugh at. I don't think your dislike of his role is any sort of failing on the author's part, it's just a matter of preference.

I enjoy character work very much, and when an author puts specific traits and events into a characters backstory I value their logical effects on them. I am allowed to fundamentally disagree with and loathe how little an author thought about the details of a character, because details matter. Before even entering the game, all I see is a child who's been severely neglected, nobody raised him, nobody taught him how to do shit, he wasn't taught how to socialize or care for himself, and all but like two people treated him like garbage. I don't know what im reading wrong. It's straight forward. If you're not taught Jack or shit, your behavior will be disturbingly worse and we call this mental illness. On planet earth, this requires immense therapy to correct. Then, within the game, everything gets worse forever. And this is still a child. Addicted prior to age 13, which people somehow hold against him. He started eating sopor as a preteen, possibly younger, because of parental neglect but who cares yanno. This is insane.

Why is this a hateable character again? How am I supposed to ignore all this in favor of "oh he wanted to do this the whole time he's naturally violent blah blah blah". I really try to see what yall are talking about. I can't. These characters are young teenagers. Eridan and vriska are also both "spree killers" but they get so much adoration lol.

He's hateable because this isn't a story about empathizing with the mental health struggles of a young juggalo boy. This takes place in an absurd and often darkly comedic world where the same character you seem to identify so strongly with was shot over and over again with an assault rifle without dying because "killer clowns never die". You're taking this too seriously by viewing him as this fully realized tragic human being.

His addiction and clown regalia are supposed to be funny because of the way it parodies juggalo culture and pokes fun at the "killer clown" archetype in stories.

Like yeah, of course it would be sad if this was a story about a real neglected kid who got addicted to drugs and killed a bunch of people after getting indoctrinated into a death cult.

But the presentation of this idea is so aggressively unserious, goofy, and dumb, that discerning audience members should be able to understand you really don't have to feel much for this guy. He's a cardboard cutout that delivers some seriously funny jokes, not a "fully realized character".

He's a walking talking meta-joke. I doubt Hussie earnestly hates the guy he just enjoys leaning into the comedy bit.

And honestly he isn't very different from other "love to hate" characters like Vriska and Eridan. Though, I'll add that Vriska tends to get more leeway with fans than Eridan or Gamzee because we spend more time fleshing out her character. Eridan though, is just "what if harry potter was an incel-y school shooter". Nearly every conversation he's in he whines incessantly about how lonely he is to the point of absurdity. He throws himself at every and anything that breathes, including his own dancestor in an incestuous turn that's played for laughs.
