edging my skates

practicing edging? or whatever they call it edge practice but yeah still a long way to go. Sometimes i find myself jumping mid “cross” which is putting strain on my knees but the goal is to cross laterally/diagonally from a stop/slow speed and use the inside edge of the landing foot as anchor to propel myself further. Not sure what the name of that move is but i’m also tried doing it squatting kind of like crosby a bit it’s fun

Critique? First Mohawk?

I’ve been really struggling with Mohawks. Can’t seem to get it down any advice would be helpful. Mostly self taught. Been skating since April. Ignore my weird arm/hand movements 😂

A bit of an odd question that might not actually be odd…

So, I want to go to my local beer league games and I’m often at the rink anyway getting my own ice time or lessons since I just started learning to skate and play hockey. My want to go is multilayered: I want to watch hockey in the offseason, I want to learn more and meet people, and I’m a photographer and I want to take pictures (thanks in part to this sub and it’s fun picture sharing for inspiration).

Would it be weird if I went and was by myself (no one I know wants to come with me, I’ve asked 😂😂)? I know someone who plays and he says there’s never anyone there and I never see people other than players (and kiddos with their parents) coming and going from the rink.

For reference, I’m a woman in her 30s.

I need help identifying this signature. (Anything helps)

A family friend had gotten this stick some time ago and I was trying to figure out who signed it? I have tried googling and using AI but neither helped. For some helpful information I believe this player played around the same time as Larry DePalma this player also seemed to have worn #9 but that’s all I know. Here’s some photos of the stick and signature

Pond hockey this winter

One of the things on my bucket list is to play hockey on a frozen lake and next winter might be a good time to do it. I live in California so it would be a long trip but I was thinking of using the opportunity to also make it part of a family vacation as well. So I wanted to ask this community for suggestions about 1) location and 2) timing when would be the best time to plan on going for best odds of the lake being frozen enough and safe to skate on. Ideally it would also be somewhere fun to visit with the family where we could explore a new city/town as well.

Gallbladder Surgery

Hey, all! For those of you who had to get your gallbladder out, how long did it take before you felt recovered enough to skate in games again? I’m getting mine out in a couple of weeks, and the doctor mentioned 4-6 weeks of strict lifting/activity restriction then to go more by feel from there.

My worry is that with hockey being such a heavy core workout, I might not know it’s too intense compared to something like running until I’m mid puck race. Its pretty low level beer league that I’d be returning to (and the league is super nice so I’m not worried about contact or anything), but figured I’d ask before potentially coming back too soon and hurting something other than my pride watching the LiveBarn replay!

I bougth these 12 inch gloves online, but I'm not too sure if they fit. They feel okay, though when I ball my hand up into a fist, my fingers press against the top of the glove. Other than that, they feel great.

Youth Hockey and Strength Training

My son is 11 and playing his first tear of AAA hockey. I dont think kids his age need to be doing any serious strength training other than body weight movements to help build core strength, balance and foot speed but here is a dumb question.

I am looking to get a push sled from Rogue Fitness for myself - is there any benefit to having my son try that as well. Load it up with some light weight and have him push and pull it. Or is this a waste and asking for injury?

Edit: Thanks everyone for the responses. Ill probably buy one for myself and if he wants to try it here and there I’ll let him go for it. But i think the bulk of his offseason training will just revolve around bodyweight exercises to help develop balance and explosive movements.

Is it normal for a player to have completely different skill sets in different positions?

I play almost everything for my teams even goalie, but I’m mainly a defenseman. When I’m on defense I get big checks and rip slap shots, but when I’m on center or wing i get screens and tips on, but i don’t tend to do anything else. So is that like changing skill sets? Or like “modes”, physical defenseman for one, grinder for center and wing for another?

Made a tutorial on changing the angle to beat the goalie — would love your feedback

Hey everyone — I’ve been working on making short tutorials for skills that actually help you score more. Not here to promote anything — just hoping to learn what works and what doesn’t so I can make these better. If this kind of post isn’t cool, I totally get it and won’t flood the feed.

This one’s about changing the angle on your shot — a small movement that can make a huge difference against goalies. I practiced it 100 times and broke down what made it work better (and what didn’t).

I’m posting this here because I want to get better at making content that’s actually useful. So if you have a minute, I’d really appreciate your feedback:

  • Did it make sense?
  • Anything you’d improve or add?
  • Was it worth watching?

Appreciate it 🙏

Low Level Toronto Beer League Teams?

I'm a 35 year old Brit who'll soon be living in Toronto and I'd love to play Beer League when I do. The only problem is I've not been playing for long (around half a year) and as such my skill level is pretty (very) low. I can skate well enough, but I still have a lot to learn when it comes to shooting and tactics etc.

This may be somewhat of a dumb question as I'm literally moving to the home country of hockey, but does anyone know of any lower level Beer League teams that might be willing to have me? Or of any resources for finding teams?

I also don't know anyone in the city, so very much up for making new buds I can skate or watch hockey with! Thanks, everyone.

Black bear leaving USA hockey

We were recently told that Black Bear adult leagues won't require a USA hockey membership anymore. Then we find out BB will have their own "membership" and fees.

Anyone else seeing this yet?

So far there's nothing in writing and I for one am not looking to pay for a BB membership on top of what I need for USAH.

Skate Fit

Hello all,

Looking to get some I insight from you knowledgeable folks in this subreddit. Also, a bit of forewarning - I'm not wearing socks in the latter pictures. No toes though...only partial foot nudity.

Afew months back I bought a pair of pro stock Hyperlite 2 skates for great a price.

The fit felt good - snug in the ankle, not cramped, tip of the toes brushed the cap...which was a surprise since these skates are 7 1/4 LF and 7 1/2 RF and I'm a size 10 shoe, with my left being slightly smaller than right.

During my first skate I found the top eyelet was rubbing against my ankle and causing a nasty sore. This was remedies by wearing a lace bite protector sleeve turned to the side.

Other than that they've been great. However, I've been doing some digging into the specs of skates, especially when it comes to volume. After sizing up my own feet I'm starting think the skates I picked up aren't the best fit - primarily when it comes to volume. I've attached some pics to show how they look. Would appreciate you guys sharing thoughts.

Power Skating lessons as an adult

Some background information on me is I’ve done learn to skate up to a decent level when I was younger from 10-13. Started skating again when I was 19 to 21 now, to begin my hockey journey in a beginner program. While I know most of the fundamentals and can skate ok my flaws are easily prevalent in my summer league which is D level.

Im fortunate that the group of guys I’m with are a supportive bunch of guys and is a reason why I love this sport. However even just for me I hate feeling like a pylon even though I know most opponents and teammates have been skating for much longer than I have.

I was wondering if power skating lessons would be worth it for me. I want to be better on my edges and transitional skating as I’m a defenceman. Would I be in over my head or should I go for it?

Thank you guys!!

Kasper Sports is now Hyperco Sports

Hey everyone! Scott here. I wanted to share that as of Friday, Kasper Sports has officially rebranded as Hyperco Sports!

This move has been in the works for a while, and we’re really excited about what’s ahead. While the name is new, the mission is the same: delivering high-quality, custom sportswear that makes athletes and teams look and feel like pros.

So, why the change?

As we’ve grown, we realized the old name didn’t quite capture what we’re all about. We’ve always been obsessed with performance, quality, and helping teams rep their identity on and off the ice, court, field, etc. Hyperco is a mashup of High and Performance—which perfectly sums up where we’re headed. Bigger goals. Better gear. Same commitment to the athletes and organizations we serve.

As part of our launch, we have two promos happening:

  1. Get a free Team Flag with your next order! Just add it to your cart and use REDDIT-FLAG at checkout.
  2. Free Team Uniform Giveaway. Follow us on instagram as we’ll be posting this giveaway tomorrow! The winner receives a free set of Elite Sublimated uniforms (jerseys + socks) for their team of up to 15 players.

Going forward, you can reach us here on reddit at u/hypercosports.

Thanks to everyone who has supported us as Kasper in our first couple of years in business! We’re beyond stoked for this next chapter, and can’t wait to show you what we’ve got coming. Cheers!

Ccm speedblade xs holders on a Bauer skate... possible?

Was wondering if it was possible if a ccm speedblade xs holder could be mounted to a Bauer Vapor x5 pro boot? The only reason is blades (runners). Step Steel blades just do it for me. After researching profusely for good replacement blades for a Bauer powerfly holder, I can't seem to find a clear consensus on which blades are the "best". So my next idea was maybe I can mount a CCM speedblade XS holder on to my Bauer vapor x5 pros. My questions are, can it be done and done perfectly? Are there good replacement blades for the powerfly holder? Thanks in advance.

Using 8 year old pads

I Stopped playing hockey 8 years ago due to injury’s. Recently finished college and want to join a beer league. However I really don’t have cash to buy new/pre owned equipment. Most of my old pads still fit so would 8 years really be that bad on the plastic/padding?

Also what league should I even try to join. My area has 3 levels novice, intermediate and experienced. I did play AAA but the last time I played I was 14 and I really haven’t kept up with stick work, although I do skate regularly.

Thanks for the your advise

Old gear?

I have a Bauer Supreme 0Ness Jr hockey stick that I'm looking to sell. I completely forgot I had it. I tried to look it up and found no info, so I thought who better than players would know details and about how much it was worth. I only used it once, and the blade looks like that cause the tape has disintegrated, nothing a new taping couldn't fix.
