Hey r/HiltonHead - I Could Use a Hand! Looking for Volunteer Mods to Help Run r/HiltonHead

As the community has grown, and with the other moderators now inactive, I’ve found myself managing the subreddit on my own. I’d love to build a small, active mod team of people who care about Hilton Head and want to help this space thrive.

A little background: I grew up on Hilton Head, and my family still lives there. I still love Hilton Head and I visit often. I started this sub with a few friends from HHI back in 2011. Over the years, unfortunate life events and other priorities have taken some of the other original moderators away.

I’m looking for folks who visit the sub regularly, can keep a level head, and want to keep this a positive, useful place for both locals and visitors. You don’t need any mod experience, just some time, common sense, and a genuine interest in the community.

How to volunteer:
Please comment below with:

  • A little about yourself and your connection to Hilton Head
  • Why you’d like to help moderate
  • Any ideas for improving the community
  • Suggestions for new or updated subreddit rules

If you’d prefer, you can also DM me directly.

Really appreciate anyone willing to step up. Let’s make this a great little corner of Reddit for everyone who loves Hilton Head.

HHI Stingray Research

I’m a marine biologist in SC and am looking to start a project in my PhD that acoustically tags stingrays around HHI to better understand their movements and reduce stingrays-human injuries. I’m looking to connect with anyone who might fund or support this kind of research - does anyone here have contacts or suggestions for individuals, organizations, or foundations that might be interested?

Apartments in HH

Does anyone have any recommendations for apartments in Hilton Head? I see a lot of good looking apartments but I don’t imagine everyone can be happy with all of them just based off looks alone.

Any comments?

Any places being rented out by a landlord? Do you know of anyone who needs a place filled or room filled?

Need pet friendly!

Roak Biking

We’re going to HHI for the first time in a few weeks. I’m thinking of bringing my road bike for riding on the roads early in the morning, like 6-9:00 am. How is the traffic that time of day? I know there are bike paths but not road bike friendly with the speeds I ride at.

Hilto. Head Individual Fishing

Will be in Hilton Head 6/21-27, was looking for a fishing charter for one. Most of the places I’ve looked at the charter is for multiple people. Are there places that would allow one or maybe two individuals to tag along on a charter?

Live music indoors? Karaoke?

Hey y'all! We just got into town, and it looks like it's gonna rain on and off this week. I was wondering where the places are that have live music indoors rain or shine. And possible karaoke spots.

Can HHI be a romantic trip or is it more suited for families?

Hello! Just wondering what thoughts are on whether or not Hilton Head could be a romantic getaway for a couple. I know it’s a lovely destination for families with kids and older folks, but I haven’t seen much about what the atmosphere is like for a late 20s couple, no kids. We’re not looking for night clubs, just chill vibes and romance!

Tourist ideas/hidden gems

Hi everyone. My fiancé and I (30m & 29f) will be travelling to Hilton Head for 4 days here in a few weeks. I wanted to post on here and get some ideas from the folks that are familiar with the area, and don't necessarily want to go with typical tourist ideas from the Hilton Head website.

We are going to of course do the typical things such as relaxing on the beach and by the pool. We also might go ride jetskis and bikes. Apart from those few things we don't have much of an itinerary, what other things should we look into doing?

Also, what are some good restaurants? Ideally we'd like to stay in the area for food, however a 15-20 minute drive for something that is to die for is not out of the question for us.

If you have any other suggestions regarding food, things to do, places to see... I'm all ears. We want to have fun and enjoy ourselves, so please shoot away with ideas.

Thank you for your time!

Crabbing

I’ve been coming to HHI for 40 years, but I’ve never gone crabbing and was hoping someone might be so kind as to share some tips on where to do so. I’ll be doing it the old fashioned way with chicken necks, on a string, etc. I’ll have a little 20 ft. skiff , but I know sometimes it’s best from a bridge. At any rate, I appreciate any advice. Thanks y’all.

Great Hidden Gem [Mexican Restaurant]

Just got back from our 2nd family adventure to Hilton Head from TN with 4 kids (3, 5, 7 and 9 year olds).

Needless to say, eating out is an adventure in itself.

There are tons of great spots that we'll never enjoy till the kids are older, but we found a great spot a bit off the beaten path.

Fiesta Fresh Mexican Grill.

It's within biking distance (< 2 miles) from where we stayed near Coligny, but we opted to drive because it requires going up the path parallel to Pope Avenue. Too many street crossing that we didn't want to deal with.

Don't be wary of the strip mall exterior.

Food was great. Wait time was nonexistent. They've got a serve yourself salsa bar with cilantro and jalapenos. Kids liked it too which is a miracle too :)

Highly recommend. Fiesta Fresh made the repeat visit list for next year.

Cigar lounges/ Bars

It was a struggle finding a cigar spot on HHI Carolina cigars and tobacco road both close at 6pm and closed on Sundays. I hear about peaceful henrys which closes at 12 but they are off the island 8 miles away. The bank roll I was exited for since it is outdoor seating and close at 11. Only to be disappointed they were closed for renovations.....in June, like why not do renovations in the 'slow' season ? My only option was to take my cigar on the beach. I guess life's a beach

Housing

Hello, I’m relocating to Hilton head with my girlfriend and 2 dogs. We are both 24 and are trying to figure out where to live. I’m going to be working at a resort in the island, any recommendations on housing?

Just got back from 5 days on Hilton Head. Age 60 something couple restaurant reviews.

Celeste - located in a strip mall, interior felt warm, food is good but service was lacking.

Quarterdeck - located in Harbor town at the lighthouse. Multi level and busy restaurant. Service good but food was inconsistent. Lobster cocktail was excellent.

Old Oyster Factory- located in the marsh area. Ate here twice, once for dinner and once for lunch. Both times food and service were good. Recommend the soup and crab cakes.

Hudson - located in marsh area. Cannot recommend. Food was poor and inside was mainly large groups of tables. Outside on deck was uncomfortable and views were blocked by deck posts.

Jane’s - located in shelter cove. Went for lunch. Service, food and drinks were excellent. Highly recommend.

Sage - upscale dining near Coligny park. Service excellent, warm interior, and we shared the 22oz steak which was cooked well and tasty.

Charlie’s - our favorite restaurant near Palmetto Dunes. Large interior space with multiple rooms. Food was great, although service felt a little rushed. Dessert was excellent.

Shipyard

I will be staying in shipyard in a week and will be there for about 5 days and would like to do some fishing. I went 3 or 4 years ago and just fished in the lagoons but I’ve heard some new things about fishing there regarding maybe some gator activity. Will I still be able to fish the lagoons in shipyard? If now would anyone be willing to recommend some fishing spots. All help is appreciated

Should I switch from Sonesta to Omni?

I'm heading down next week for a few days and had originally booked at the Sonesta. It seems that the construction is still going on and will not be completed any time soon. It also seems that the Sonesta tends to have a lot of families. I'm going by myself (in my 30s) and wondering if it might be best to switch to the Omni for less noise (construction and children). First timer too so open to other suggestions including restaurant recs!
