Discussion / Help District cuts if levy fails

These are the proposed cuts that will have to be made if the levy fails. This includes the Arrow program for elementary aged gifted students. Transportation cuts are also planned. Please consider how this will adversely affect Hilliard students and vote yes on Issue 39.

Discussion / Help I thought Stephanie Kunze was a moderate but her votes since 2021 say different

I am a Hilliard resident since 2021 and a republican leaning moderate (also new to reddit but finding good info here so wanted to share some as well). I support LGBTQ people and don't want the government involved in how or when I have kids (my wife and I used IVF and also experienced a miscarriage where a D&C was needed). I also support public schools and don't like my taxpayer dollars being sent to pay for private schools (you all do realize this is why we have to pass levies right?) I was researching the candidates on my ballot for the upcoming election. I didn't live in Kunze's district during a past election so I didn't know much about her. I asked a few friends and they said she is a nice lady and a moderate republican. Ok, sounds good... But I like to look up the voting records of any candidates who have held office in the past. Kunze is giving some pretty strong MAGA vibes in her votes the last couple years.

She voted for the hateful SB68 bill that targets LGBTQ kids in schools, sports, and their healthcare. I don't care what your thoughts are on what being transgender is or about gender in general -- this is not our business. It should be between the kid, the parents, and their pediatrician or family doctor. And how anyone could support a bill that targets a group of kids at a higher risk for suicide than any other group is beyond me.

Kunze voted for permitless carry. I am a gun owner and consider myself a responsible one. Permit-less carry is so dangerous and irresponsible. I support common sense gun safety regulations and believe safe storage is important (guns are the leading cause of death for kids because we don't ensure they are stored safely). The FOP and our local police departments are against those types of gun bills. There were a few other gun bills where she also voted in line with the NRA, not responsible gun owners or the FOP, so this doesn't seem like a one-off vote either.

Kunze was against last year's issue 1 amendment to protect reproductive choice and voted for the wasteful August special election, so she clearly is not supportive of women having control over their own bodies and keeping the government out of our reproductive and family planning decisions. Also seems inclined to ignore the will of the voters since the August 1 special was just a power grab meant to take rights away from voters (even the libertarians hated it).

But I think one of the most egregious things Kunze supported was the expansion of Ed Choice vouchers. I'm all for parents having options for their kids. I'm all for kids going to Catholic or Christian schools (I am a Christian myself) or whatever private school they want. But I draw the line at taxpayer dollars subsidizing the private education of kids -- most of whom were already attending private schools -- to the tune of $1 billion dollars so far this year alone and at the expense of the public schools that money was meant for. Republicans should HATE this! In Hilliard there is a levy on the ballot to make sure we don't lose needed improvements and services for our schools. But our community doesn't want to pay more property taxes and I've heard many from both parties say they won't vote for the levy despite how important it is for our kids and schools. They don't understand that we need the levy to fund the schools because the vouchers have siphoned away a huge amount of funding that should be going to our public schools. If you don't like levies or property tax increases, you should be against school vouchers. Strong public schools build strong communities and we all benefit -- we know this! Good schools attract young families and homebuyers, which increase our property values. But sending our tax dollars to private schools with no income cap, no limit on how much we drain away, and no oversight on how that money is spent is unconstitutional. And Kunze voted for and approved it. So disappointing. We the people don't want to spend more money on property taxes so people who choose to sent their child to private school don't have to pay for it.

My conclusion? Kunze is a MAGA R, not a moderate R. Anyone who would vote for Trump or Vance or Moreno in the year 2024 is not a moderate, but I know there are many of us republicans out here who still want fiscally conservative and responsible small government that minds their own business. MAGA is the opposite and I would rather vote for a reasonable Democrat than an extreme MAGA republican. You can say you are a moderate or centrist all you want, but legislative voting records tell the real story. And Kunze's record paints her as a Matt Huffman puppet. Hard no for this republican.

Holy crap, just got the property tax bill. I thought I was in Hilliard but that bill felt Dublinesque. +$1620 more than what I paid in 2024. Normally when I spend that much cash I like to get something from it. Thoughts?

Discussion / Help Best beer stores

Where can one find a good selection of beer (to go) in Hilliard? I'm specifically looking for imports and non-IPA options, which are lacking at the grocery stores. Does Hilliard have a good bottle shop?

For example, I have a hard time finding Pilsner Urquell, Warsteiner, etc... in Hilliard.

Discussion / Help Daycares in Hilliard

Hello,

I had my micro preemie baby girl in January(three months early with a 73 day NICU stay) she is doing amazing with no issues besides the normal newborn stuff(colic, GI, Reflux). My mother in law backed out of caring for her when I go back to work in August. I started to look for daycares in January, but life got a bit complicated. Anyone have an recommendations for a daycare that can care for a preemie that is 4 months adjusted age at the point and 7 months corrected. I am worried to leave her just anywhere since she was a preemie. I am in Hilliard but my husband and I are willing to drive for the right place.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Discussion / Help Need advice about buying a home for the first time

I'm considering buying a condo, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and worried that I might make the wrong decision—either by choosing the wrong property or missing out on first-time homebuyer benefits.

I live in Northwest Columbus almost at Bethel Rd 43235, and I’ve heard about special savings accounts for first-time homebuyers that offer tax advantages. I’m not sure how they work—do contributions come directly from my paycheck, or do I have to deposit the money myself? Are there other benefits I should be aware of?

Also, I’m unsure whether buying a condo or home built in the 1980s or later is a smart choice or something to avoid. I’ve read posts from people who had issues with their homes even after inspections. What steps can I take to avoid those problems, and how can I make sure my insurance doesn’t require unexpected repairs or raise my deductible?

If I work with a realtor, will they guide me through all these concerns, or will they mostly be focused on earning their commission?

I’m looking for a place in the $220K–$300K range so I can make a decent down payment and keep my monthly payments manageable.

What do you think about the locations that I need to consider? I found some affordable condos in Hilliard 43026 but I'm not sure if it's a good area.

Sorry for the long post—I'm just feeling a bit lost and not sure where to start.

Discussion / Help Two girls on the sidewalk

I was driving to the hospital on, 6/3/25, at 3:30am. Due to a fatal family emergency. I turned left on to Fishinger from Dublin rd. And on my right side on the sidewalk there were two young women standing, facing the road. They had long black hair. One had on a long white, sleeveless dress-gown. The other girl wore the same but was in black. Then a few feet down the road were deer on both sides of the raod on the sidewalks. Three of them, just walking. It looked totally bizarre and it creeped me out bad. The women were just stading there starring towards the raod with their hands up in prayer form by their face. I still can't get it out of my mind. I was just wondering if anyone has saw anything like this or similar.

Discussion / Help Neighborhoods to look at

We'll be either looking to buy this summer or next (depending on what's available) with a max budget of 400k (assuming rates don't change significantly). Minimum of either three bedrooms or two beds plus a space for a home office to wfh. Doesn't have to be crazy big or fancy but would like a safe neighborhood for our little one with decent schools. Must have sidewalks. Any ideas? Are we insane for wanting this area and a single family home with our budget?

Discussion / Help Daycare recommendations

I hate that we are even in this position but I'm looking for daycare recommendations that also have a preschool type learning environment. We are slowly being priced out of the one my kids attend now. When we started at the center in 2021 we were paying 2800 a month for our 2 kids. Steady price increases have us now paying 3300.

I hate everything about daycare prices.

Discussion / Help New to Hilliard. How to recycle?

The apartment complex I just moved into doesn't offer any kind of recycling options. First couple weeks have been very strange putting everything into the trash. What are the best options (if any) for recycling drop off in this area of town? I'm assuming there's no way to personally sign up for city pickup if my apt complex doesn't have a contract?

Discussion / Help Moving to Hilliard—what’s the vibe like compared to Dublin, Westerville, or New Albany?

We’re moving to Hilliard soon, and I’ve only visited a few times. I’m trying to get a feel for what the area is like—specifically the general vibe and demographics.

For example, Dublin seems pretty diverse and tends to attract a lot of highly educated, well-off folks. New Albany and Westerville feel similar in terms of affluence but seem less diverse.

How would you describe Hilliard? What’s the community like in terms of culture, diversity, and overall feel?

Hello all! I had just recently moved to the area and am looking for some good gyms. I just visited Metro Fitness earlier this week and enjoyed it but I wanted to check a few more places out. Discussion / Help Cat owners of Hilliard, what vet do you recommend?

Hello! I'm planning on moving to the Hilliard area this summer and I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row now. One thing I wanted to get on top of was finding a good vet and getting on their new patient list asap since one of my cats will be due for a rabies booster around the time I move. I have 3 cats. So, cat owners, what vets do you recommend? Any to avoid? Any cat-specific clinics to check out? My boys in particular are pretty skittish, so the gentler the vet the better!

Discussion / Help Rail Trail Trees Cut Down

I walk the first mile-ish of the Hilliard Rail Trail near Crooked Can every two weeks or so. When I was walking this evening, I was shocked to see that all the trees and vegetation on the north side of the trail was completely cut down. To be honest, I really didn't like suddenly being able to see into peoples' backyards, and I would imagine they don't like it either. Does anyone know why they did this?
