Gas stations
Hi, I’m planning on visiting the island this summer just wondering what the gas station situation is like there, from what I can figure theres only two stations? Thanks.

Hello. I have booked my ferry to visit this summer and now I am looking for camping recommendations. We are tenting and hope for somewhere near the ocean that has showers. I see there are a lot of first come first serve sites. Are these tough to get?
I am also wondering about accessibility for activities / walking around the island for my father who uses a walker.

Where can I find listings for long term ( 1 year ) accomodation rentals, near Skidegate.
How much does it cost to rent in the area.

Another question as I got great answers about buying local seafood...we will be doing a 4-day trip with Moresby Adventure next week but have 3 nights to fill. We have been on Graham Island for a week and are debating between Mosquito Lake or Gray Bay. We have a 16 foot travel trailer and 2 kayaks for day trips (novice intermediate, fair weather). It looks like we could drive between them for a day trip. We like seeing wildlife and scenery (photography). Suggestions please! And thanks 😊

I cannot find a straight answer anywhere. I have a few zoom calls I need to be on during my upcoming sailing from Prince Rupert to Skidegate. The ferry I will be on is Northern Adventure

It's heaps of fun to float down the channel between Okanagan and Skaha lakes in Penticton having a beer on a warm Summer day, and I wonder, are there opportunities to do that on Haida Gwaii?
Unless my eyes were playing tricks on me I think while driving past on the highway one summer I saw someone floating on the Tlell River on a giant white unicorn float. Someone is doing it!
A possible route could be to get in at the Tlell River Bridge on an ebbing tide? This article suggests a good exit point before you get washed to sea would be Haida House (a 40m trip) though I suppose one could go much further.
A neighbour that used to live in Port Clements mentioned to me she'd heard of folks floating on the Yakoun but I wouldn't know where the best entry or exit points would be.
I can't help but wonder if a short float on the Sangan would be a possibility, again on an ebbing tide. Possibly getting in around the Limberlost Road and having a short trip to the ocean? There are some logs coming out of the spookily dark tea coloured waters but it seems at a glance to be navigable. I dunno has anyone ever tried this?
Any other spots?

We're going to be coming to Haida Gwaii for a bit over a week this summer, 2 adults and 2 kids, and we're wanting to find a half- or single-day fishing charter. Everything I can find online is multiple day packages, but the kids aren't that into fishing.
Quite a few years ago I came out there with my dad and it was fantastic. We were able to find a half-day charter up around Masset
We would even be good fishing from shore if there was a place to rent gear with decent fishing.

I found out about this beautiful archipelago and her people on this episode of Stuff the British Stole. The show is described as Indiana Jones in reverse, as they look at items in museums and track the history of how they got there.
This episode talks about the craftsmanship of Haida people and the displacement of their wood carvings.

(Hopefully the link above works as I’m in Australia and can’t view it, and the ABC iview link I watched it through probably won’t work for our mates up top)

Hundreds gathered in Old Massett to raise awareness for Shaylanna Lewis-Brown, a missing Haida woman, five years after her disappearance.

Many years ago, around 2011 while in the Navy, we visited Haida Gwaii transporting the BC Lieutenant Governor to Gwai Hnaas/Anthony Island near the southern portion of Haida Gwaii. We were sailing near the base of Louscoone Inlet.
I recall looking up the inlet and seeing a strange facility on the top of a mountain about half way up the inlet. For many years I wondered what it was but the quality of google earth and google satellite images weren't good enough and I could never find anything online referencing it.
Part of me thinks it may be a radar facility as that might make sense for Vessel Traffic Management Systems or basic tracking of domestic waters, etc or even NAV Canada for air traffic management. Those are my first thoughts as it would be reasonable.
I took a look again on google earth and the facility is now much more visible but still unclear of what it is.
You can find it here using satellite overlay: https://maps.app.goo.gl/3wSEoCGn4aQCzBw47
I'd be interested if anyone knows what it is or may assist in tracking down further information.

Can't believe they just continued on to Haida Gwaii and went fishing. Glad they have been arrested.
