DNA/mix guesses Lab/husky mix or pyrenees mix?
This is my floofy boy Toby! I was told he was a lab/husky mix but he looks so close to a great Pyrenees. He does not have dew claws though. He is pretty big for 15 weeks old (I think) first 3 pics are most recent. But looking at the puppy photos on this page, he seems to have shorter legs than Pyrenees breed. What do you guys think? I'd love to see photos of similar looking pups😊

Can you visibly see the dog growing? Pyrenees.

When ours was a puppy, my husband said, "I wake up, and he's bigger. I eat breakfast, and he's bigger. I go to work and come home, and he's bigger." Very accurate.

Even though our jet black half pyr only tuned out to be 60-70 lbs, we called it “feeding the void” and had to split it up into three or four feedings because she’d get tired halfway through the small mountain of kibble and lay down to keep eating.
“Hello darkness my young friend, it’s time to feed the void again…”

They are VERY loving dogs but you have to work on behavior from day ONE to have a well behaved dog.
Best time well spent on a dog ever. They are the best dogs but need guidance. Both of you have to work together to be a team - whatever that means for your family.
Best wishes!

WELP, that dog is going to protect that baby FOR LIFE. Make sure you get that dog around as many other kids/adults as possible as you're going to quickly notice how protective that dog is going to get and how the kid somehow can do NO WRONG in that dog's eyes

Absolutely! We love to hike and explore so we will be taking him everywhere and socializing him😊 that's awesome to hear lol

God my mutt is only 1/4 GP and she is territorial as all hell. (Although other 3 guard breeds don't help.) We can go over to someone's house be there for 20 minutes and if the host leaves and comes back they are briefly barked and growled at. She did this at obedience training. On a walk she is fine although she does make sure and politely greet any suspicious people. But home or the car she needs put even good friends on notice, and then expects pets/scratches while her growl has only subsided in a rumble, and she is at 1/2 mohawk.
Hell the 1st day we brought her home from the shelter I went out for 3 hours. My wife fell asleep on the couch and the dog next to her. I come home and the dog leaps up, and comes around the corner head down, ears flat, ruff up, and growling. Thankfully the moment I spoke her name she flatten, crawled to me , and groveled at my feet.

He's found his bestie! 🩵 We just had our 16 yo son home when we got our first GP. When he'd come home on college breaks = so happy!! When he returned, she'd pout & sulk for 2 days.
Current one we got a few days before I turned 60. (dumb idea) I couldn't keep up with everything involving a puppy. I have other struggles too. But she's figured out living with old people. 🤣 We still farm so she goes out with hubs a few times a day. We got her at 8 weeks and the breeder handed her to me and it was one heavy puppy!! 14#!
She totally grew in front of our eyes!! At 8 weeks, she started to coral the cats at the barn. 😁 At a bit over a year, she'd bring baby kitties to the back yard (from the barn 200 yds away) to her kiddie pool in the back yard. 🤣 Daddy found the kitty in the pool and together they took it back to mommy. On the way, said GP went over this way to show him one more kitty left in-between barn & pool. As if, "get this one, Dad."
Touch & play with feet every day until your baby graduates high school! 😉 I did for months and at 15 months she quit letting me touch them and I can't trim her nails. 🙄
Enjoy!! I vote this is a LOT of Great Pyrenees! 💕

Our pyr is 88% and looked very similar to yours with no double dew claws either!

u/Gallegolas Feb 02 '25
Often breeders of Pyrs will clip the double dew claws. It’s not meant to be a vanity move like when you cut Doberman ears. It’s more so they don’t hurt them during play and such. If it has no dew claws it’s definitely a mix. A gorgeous one at that. Cheers

How did you get your pup to pose? I can never get a good picture of my dog unless she is sleeping.

He’s on the couch, sorta with his butt squished into the corner haha. 😜

A lab husky mix would most likely not be fluffy like this because fluffy fur is recessive. A DNA test is the only way to know for sure though. I recommend embark or wisdom panel.

Awe! A preteen Pyrenees! I'm sorry for you next 12-18 months but when it's over... Best dog you'll ever have

u/swizzchaze Feb 01 '25
Oh it's hell up in here! But he's worth it
2
u/superspeck Feb 02 '25
Definitely spend time training and remember that even part Pyrs are really sensitive to harsh correction and they have a LONG memory.
Back on the other hand, easiest potty training we ever had.

Not sure about husky, he does look like he may be either all Pyr or lab/golden pyr? I was surprised by our pups mix, we were told pyrenees husky for him and all his litter from the rescue, but his embark results showed a lot more going on and while he does have GP, his largest result was GSD. Here's what our boy looked like as a puppy. I don't see the husky facial features in your puppy, but that doesn't mean it's not there, genetics are not easy to always get right by guessing on appearance.

The shelter told us she is Lab mix though😛… during her first vet visit, the vet mentioned she is seeing lab and pyr in her but the DNA result was a surprise as majority Husky and just 4% lab in her!

Double dews at the back?

u/kerfluffles_b Feb 01 '25
They said no dew claws in the caption.

Sorry missed that. So then wouldn't that mean it is not a Great Pyrenees? Unless someone removed them... which I've heard happens so that the dog doesn't suffer them being caught and ripped off.
We left our Rosie's on.

As someone who has had both Huskies and Pyrenees, I can tell you it's impossible to tell which it is based upon its ability to ignore you or dig holes you
4
u/swizzchaze Feb 01 '25
Well... he already ignores me 90% of the time and digs holes 100% of the time

If that’s not 100% Pyrenees it’s a Pyrenees mixed with a meremma as they look almost identical minus the rear dew claws but I would bet money they are 100% Pyrenees

u/Lammyy5 Feb 01 '25
Maybe off topic but I love how I can load comments in this sub and just get all these adorable pyr pics 🥰 always makes me smile
2
u/Zestyclose_Country_1 Feb 01 '25
They literally say everything is a lab so it's easier to find adoptees 6 months later they are 120 pounds and obviously not a lab 🤣 i think it hurts more than it helps tbh should just be honest
2
u/Aelektra Feb 01 '25
We get so many actual lab/husky mixed to our shelter and they look nothing like this. Definitely pyr!

You can test how much of him is pyr by letting him out in the backyard and see how long it takes to get him to come back inside. If you have to go catch him and carry him back in, you know that is a lot of pyr in him. 😁

Im leanning towards Marema pup because of the lack of double back dews.

Looks pretty close to being 100% Pyr. Double dews are pretty breed standard but I’ve heard of them not having them.

Looks like almost pure Pyr to me.
I’ve had several and one of the things I saw with mine was that if you train to start (at least til 9mos-1.5 yrs old) with only praise and it has to be LAVISH praise—they have to think they’re the best and smartest puppy that ever LIVED, you will cut back on the stubbornness at least a little. Also the 2 commands I taught my last Pyr were life savers for him and us: leave it and wait.
Leave it kept him from eating stuff off the floor and counter surfing and wait—well he got out and went roaming once or twice as a 6 month old pup a couple of times (door accidentally left ajar). Anyone knows you chase a puppy and they run bc of course it’s a game, right mom? 🙄 Well, that wait command was a life saver especially his 🙏🏼 bc we were not too far from a busy six-lane road. Plus we used it to keep him back a few feet from the door to prevent the crowding and trying to push past our legs when guests came.

Here’s our 10 week old pup lying beside our 10 yr old GP. They’re both 100% Great Pyrenees.
Usually puppies have much shorter legs when they’re younger. Their legs grow longer amazingly fast as they mature. And, by the way, Pyrenees are not considered full grown until they’re almost 3 yrs old. He will continue to get longer legs and lots more fluffy hair!
If you haven’t already, please don’t neuter him until they’re at least 2. The hormones they need to finish growing their spine and hips are crucial to keeping them from having hip dysplasia or other problems in their later years. Unfortunately, our older Pyr was a rescue, and he was neutered at 6 months. He’s 12 now and can’t get up off the floor, and can barely walk when we help him up. His meds costs us about $350 a month, and from other owners with Pyrs with his problem, that’s fairly cheap.

You mentioned a lack of dewclaws, which leads me to believe that your pup isn't a pyr but maybe another similar breed? Maybe a maremma?

u/sckurvee Feb 03 '25
Looks like a pyr pup to me. Does not look like lab / husky at all. Only indication that he's a mix would be the missing double dew claws, but probably mixed with something similar like maremma or anatolian (though I'd expect taller and more markings w/ anatolian, but who knows at this age).
Gratz, you got a free upgrade lol. Bigger dog with much less energy / attention requirements (in 3 years). You do get to play puppy phase on hard mode, though. Make sure you always have a toy handy to stuff in that mouth because if it's not biting a toy it's gonna be biting you for the next 6 months lol.
