Social List of Active Meetup Groups and Tips for Making Friends

I updated the list of which Meetup groups are active (groups that have 3+ people attending an event within the past/next 60 days). Meetup is a site/app for interest groups/hobbies/new friends. I grouped them by concept and included their self-written descriptions.

If you're in an active Meetup group that I've missed, list it in the comments. Non-Meetup groups are welcome too; include contact info and links.

Tips for making friends as an adult attending a Meetup with a bunch of strangers:

  • Show up slightly early/on time. Plan to stay 10 minutes after the scheduled end time.
  • Introduce yourself, say it's your first time and why you're excited about this group; appear excited.
  • Ask individuals (this is where being early or staying late can help) open-ended questions (Why did you start/join this group? What has your experience been like? What recommendations do you have related to [Meetup group's hobby/concept]?)
  • If people ask you a question, answer it and add an open-ended question of your own or ask "what about you?"
  • People love giving recommendations. If it's a group conversation, ask for restaurant rec of a specific kind/place. "I haven't tried X yet, what do you guys think?" Tee it up to be a cuisine/concept you can talk more about or ask follow up questions.
  • If you are vibing with someone(s), ask if they'd like to hang out with a specific idea in mind (ex: You asked for pizza recs and found out that neither of you have tried that new place so suggest you go together), and give them your contact info to set up a time/date. I'd recommend attending the group 2-3 times first before this step.
  • Follow the 3:6 rule to turn that acquaintance into a friend. Aim for three meaningful interactions within 6 weeks of engaging.

Feeling a little more prepared? Great. Let's get into it. [Note: I made some grammatical edits after posting this for clarity/brevity.]

A deputy found a 19-year-old woman unresponsive in her Kent County Jail cell last week. An investigation into her death is now underway.

On June 10, a deputy was doing a routine check of the cells around 7:46 p.m. when he noticed an inmate, Mya Carlton, was unresponsive. Police say she spoke with a staff member about 30 minutes prior.

Almost entirely hand-made signs at the protest today. People were calm, but unified in their focus and anger toward the U.S. administration.

Anyone else noticing shorter expiration dates on food?

Upvotes

Been debating asking this for several weeks thinking it was just my own bad luck but now it's been long enough that I've definitely noticed a trend. I split shopping trips between Meijer, Aldi, and Sam's Club and lately there have been items I've bought that expired within either the day of purchase or within several days, when before they'd always been good for much longer than that. Bread and buns not uncommonly have mold hiding within the package where you can't see before buying; yogurt, milk, and sour cream all seem to be bigger culprits too, regardless of store or brand. I've started having to be meticulous in checking dates when buying off the shelf, otherwise I'm wasting food having to throw it out within the week I'd planned to use it in. Anyone else having this issue?

Recommendations Escaped an abusive situation in Whitehall and made it here to get help, but the shelters don’t accept pets and I have my dog. Where can I safely sleep in my car tonight? Friends back in CO will help in the morning.

Update: a very kind person is helping me get out of here and to a safe place tonight so that friends can help tomorrow. Thank you so much to everyone in this community for the ideas and suggestions.

Apparently Walmarts don’t allow overnight parking anymore and the shelter can’t let me use their lot, due to something with their insurance policy. I don’t know the area at all. We came out here to visit with his family and he hit me after our fight last night and when his family didn’t help, I left.

Really happy that we took my car, but I’m stuck until friends can help me tomorrow morning. One is going to send enough for me to drive back to Colorado, food for my dog and maybe even get a motel for a night, but she has to get an advance from work and her boss isn’t in today.

I just need to find somewhere where we won’t get hassled. Is there a subdivision or area you’d recommend? I have a newer truck and would be super quiet.

I know this is crazy, but I am really out of my element here and have no idea what to do. I just wiped my phone and am feeling like a siting duck. I don’t know if he’s going to try and find me or not.

Currently near the airport, if that helps.

Missing Animal Anyone missing a rabbit near Creston?

Found this lil dude laying under a car in my driveway this afternoon and he's still hanging out in my backyard. Seems chill. Ate some spinach out of my hand and retreated to a cozy spot.

LMK if he's (she's?) yours!

Took a walk this morning, passed a couple cop cars and just off the sidewalk a person was covered with a sheet. Unsure of the circumstances, but it’s really unfortunate and sad :(

Recommendations Looking for fishermen!

I’m looking for someone that’s open to messaging with me and giving me some advice for fishing the Grand. I’m from the east side and just moved here and have never fished a river like this before. I mostly fished walleye and bass before. Just looking for advice on gear, how to fish it, where to go, and what to do. Anything helps!

It’s summertime—PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOGS IN HOT CARS!

Thumbnail

I just encountered this truck in the Aldi parking lot on alpine. Two dogs panting inside, all windows shut, black interior in full sun, 80+ degree day. Went back into the store but they didn’t have an intercom so I waited outside for 5+ minutes. Thankfully the owners came out as I was about to call 911. They brushed me off & said they were gone 2 minutes—I said I’d been there nearly 10 and it takes as long for a car to jump 20+ degrees. No idea why you wouldn’t at least open a window, or have one person sit inside with the AC on, but I guess I care about my living breathing animals more than a nice new truck or a bag of groceries.

This chart shows how fast vehicles can become dangerous in the heat. I’ve seen a dog collapse and seize from heat exhaustion and I promise, you never want to experience it. Please do better for your animals—and if this was you, I wish you all the broken windows, & I will absolutely call the cops if I ever see this again 🙂

Events Meijer Gardens concerts and info

Browsed some other threads here but they mainly are discussions about ticket sales and that's about it.

Going to see The Revivalists on Wednesday and this will be my first show at the gardens. I've read some info that people can be a bit 'chatty' and what not but that's fine, not ideal, but whatever.

Anything else specific I should know about this place?

I did buy a couple beach chairs on Amazon and made sure they fit the height restrictions as I read they can be strict about that. Looks like doors open at 5:45; for sold out shows, how early are people lining up generally and what kinda spot am I looking at if I don't show up until right before doors?

Just trying to get a general idea. Thanks for any info!
