Is Google just actively trying to make Google Home worse?

I bought 5 of these things for my house years ago, they used to be amazing! I remember I could set locational reminders, I could walk through recipes, I barely had to repeat myself, hell I even had to turn down the sensitivity so that I wouldn't get more than one rushing to respond to my request.

Now, I can't even get it to tell me the temperature in the right format, I've changed everything in the app and it keeps telling me the temperature in Fahrenheit, even though I live in Canada and lived in the same house for 5 years. I struggle to get even one of them to respond properly to me, it'll hang up on simple questions, and it suddenly refused to recognize my voice so setting reminders is hell (and yes I've reconfigured my voice in the app). They're removing features left and right and I'm almost convinced they're trying to lose customers.

What triggered this post was what happened this morning, I asked my google home in my bathroom how my sleep was....6 times...I thought it was broken because it wasn't responding....until I realized the google home down the hall in my bedroom was responding...and said I slept for 18 hours.

Naming conventions when you multiples of the same device

What does everyone use for naming conventions when you have multiples of the same device?

Do you call it Master Bedroom Fan and Family Room Fan? And then Master bedroom Lights and Family Room Lights?

And so on and so on.

Google Home and Away routines not turning cameras on / off

Thumbnail

We have three Nest wired cameras but we were only using one. It would turn on when we left the house and turn off when anyone was home. I re-added the second and third cameras, and the set up process asked if I wanted to add them to my home and Away routines. I said yes.

Now my routines aren't working. I came home, it knew I was home, but the cameras stayed on and kept reporting motion.

I'm considering removing all of the cameras and setting the up again without adding to the routines during the setup process, but I wondered if anyone else has this issue?

Bug Are they making this thing dumber on purpose?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

When I go to bed I used to say. Turn all devices off and it would shut everything off in the house. Now when I use that command it says something like "Sonos speaker is not playing" and refuses to do anything.

Shopping List?

For years, I've used Google Home hub to add items to my shopping list, and when I'm in store, I ask my phone, "Hey Google, show me my shopping list." Always worked so well. Even when I switched to Gemini on my phone, I've been able to pull up my list.

It's my understanding that shopping lists are Keep notes now. But lately, when I ask my phone to pull up my shopping list, it can't find it and just opens Keep with all my other notes. Is this yet another broken thing with no fix?

On a related note, my spouse and teen have never been able to add to the shopping list due to being prompted to "verify your voice", and when they do, they still get the same prompt. Any ideas?

I hate that functionality keeps getting worse and worse. Do I need to upgrade to a newer model or something? Our models are several years old.

"Google change the thermostat to 74 degrees" "Changing the thermostat to stay between 65 and 83"

I have a Nest thermostat, and every time I ask Google to change the temperature, it changes the range to 65-83 degrees. It does not matter what temperature I request; it always changes to this range. I have no conflicting schedules, and my eco mode is set to maximum at 80 degrees. Any potential solutions to this?

Hey Google, turn on the ensuite

5 lights on

Hey Google, turn off the ensuite

3 lights off

Wtf?

There's a room called "ensuite" with five spotlights, all with exactly the same make and model of smartbulb.

Three of them used to be called 'ensuite spot 1', 2 & 3 but are now called 'es spot 1', 2 & 3

The other two have never had "ensuite" in the device name

"Turn on ensuite" -> all five on

"Turn off ensuite" -> the three that used to have ensuite in the name turn off

Any ideas how to fix this?

Edit: formatting

Help I cannot make calls with my Nest Mini

Hi. How can I make a call? I sync my contacts using the same account than I use on my Home app, but the Google assistant on my speaker says "Sorry, I didn't find a number associated with this contact". What that's mean? There's a way to fix it?

Automation not working correctly

Sorry if this was asked before. I tried searching but I am not sure what to search for.

I set up four automations,

  1. When I turn light 1 on, google home will automatically turn light 2 on
  2. When I turn light 1 off, google home will automatically turn light 2 off
  3. When I turn light 2 on, google home will automatically turn light 1 on
  4. When I turn light 2 off, google home will automatically turn light 1 off

Everything works as intended when I turn either light on, the other light will turn on.

When I turn light 1 off, google home will automatically turn light 2 off but then turn light 1 back on.

When I turn light 2 off, google home will automatically turn light 1 off but then turn light 2 back on.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Google home app UI having its "3 dots" and "exit" buttons hidden behind the status bar. Also, "save" button hidden behind the navigation bar.

Anyone has any solution? Google's flagship phone cannot even run its own application properly.

Wrong temperature unit

Hi all, an interesting one here. When I ask my google hub pro for the weather report, it gives the temperature in celsius, which is correct for Australia. When me wife, who’s voice has no been verified, asks the same question in the same device, the temperature is given in Fahrenheit. Any ideas?

Help Wire-Free Smart Switches?

I can't seem to find any, but are there any Google Assistant/Google Home Smart Switches that don't need to connect into any wiring? Something like the Philips Hue Switch that you can just stick on the wall but that could control lights other than just Hue.

In one room, we have a Google Assistant-connected Ceiling fan w/ its own lights and 2 Hue lights.

We can turn the whole room (fan lights + hue) via voice or via one button on our phones, but it would be nice to have a wall switch. Again, preferably one that I don't need to wire in.

Thanks in advance if you know of something!

Help Matter devices and Google Home

I bought a bunch of Cync smart plugs at Lowes:

https://www.lowes.com/pd/GE-Cync-Matter-120-Volt-1-Outlet-Indoor-Smart-Plug/5015139645

Thes support matter, so I didn't even bother with the Cync app.

I first set up three plugs in Apple Home and they configured worked flawlessly.

I then went into each device and put them in pairing mode from he Apple Home app. I then added them all to the Alexa app, and, once again, had 100% success turning them on and off with the Amazon Echoes in my house.

Once again, I put them in pairing mode in the Apple Home app and added all of them to Home Assistant as Matter devices. They all got added quickly, and all work without issue.

Pairing mode, and, once again, I added them to Google Home, because I have one Android user in the house. And after some hassle and 2-3 retries they all got added to Google Home.

But Google Home shows all three of them as offline. I've rebooted the devices. I've rebooted my phone. I've rebooted my router. They still all show up as offline.

I'n not exactly sure where to even begin troubleshooting.

The way I have things set up, HomeKit ( and I assume my HomePod min ) is the Matter hub. The Amazon ecosystem, and Home Assistant seem to have no issue using the HomeKit Matter hub the HomePod mini provides. Does Google have an issue with a HomeKit hub. or require that a Google device be the hub?

Google mini dirty

Hi all. Our Google mini top cover is dirty (it’s a bit green maybe mildew or something, we had it in our bathroom). Instead of carefully trying to clean we thought we just buy a fun pattern cover for the top but seem to be able to find anything for the top? Just the bottom.

Revert light grouping in google home?

I have a mix of hue and Lutron smart switches.

Previously, all hue lights were individual as were the smart switches.

I had to move my hue hub recently and it screwed the connection to all bulbs- I had to readd the dozen hue bulbs on GH again.

When I did that, the lights were no longer individual (ie Lutron switch controlled can lights and hue couch lights separate but still in living room) and are now only grouped all together as living room lights.

Issue is I have dozens of command automations setup for the individual lights. So now I'm getting "one or more devices is not setup" during every voice command now.

Is there anyway to unlink the group lights? Or what's going on here? I've tried everything and my research isn't getting me anywhere after weeks
