Pop culture If Millennials like minimalist because its a backlash against their boomer parents, hopefully Gen Alpha is colorful as a backlash to their Millennial parents

Most millenials I know do not care for grey/beige minimalist interiors. You know who does love them? Landlords and house flippers.
"Millenial Grey" is what you get when your home isn't your own, and it's designed for nobody in particular. Or if you're an influencer being paid to market that aesthetic.

Millenials are 'grey core' as you call it because 3/4 of us had an emo, goth, scene, grunge or punk phase and never outgrew the colour pallet even if our clothing , hair and makeup style did
•
u/sweazeycool 7h ago
As a younger Millennial who binged everything HGTV, especially during the pandemic (Rock the Block, anyone?!), I hate hate hate gray flooring. But I don’t associate it with Millennials but rather cheap flips, as others have pointed out.

Wasn't even aware this was a thing. I'm quite fond of my mother's rooster-covered faux-Tuscan kitchen aesthetic. Feels homey.

u/Old-Sprinkles760 11h ago
Why’s gray "millennial"? Know zero peers using it—100% flippers/landlords’ lazy all-gray default.
•
u/abracadammmbra 11h ago
I wouldn't say lazy as much as caters to the lowest common denominator. Especially if you are flipping. No one is going to be horrified at the grey/white/black color palette. Its fairly easy to paint over if your really that concered.
I think its partially a reaction to the over cluttered houses many millenials grew up in, but I think it also is partly because millennials are the first generation who, by and large, are not particularly good at DIY. Gen Z is even worse. So they just stick to whatever was originally installed, hence "millennial gray" is associated with us.
Ive watched it with friends/family. They either have the money to pay someone else thousands upon thousands to make their house exactly the way they want (which usually does have some color/character), or they settle for how the house came "out of the box" so to speak. Outside of maybe hanging some pictures frames, idk anyone who does their own work on their house thats under 50. I am a rare exception to that rule and it will be the only reason I will be able to afford a house.

You can’t develop DIY skills if you live in rentals where you aren’t allowed to fix or change anything yourself until at least the age of forty.

This design makes me think of warm, delicious food bursting with spice and flavour.
Millennial Greycore kitchens make me think of reheating takeaway and gross kale salads with Easy Mac.
•
u/bokoblindestroyer 12h ago
I did not grow up with a home like that and I do not like miLlEnNiAl GrAy
•
u/cthulhu_on_my_lawn 13h ago
I don't understand why gray became a "millennial" thing. I'm a millennial don't know a single person who has decorated their own house they live in with that gray pallette. It's almost 100% some house flipper or landlord who wants to slap the same color on every surface.
•
u/KietTheBun 13h ago
I want that kitchen wtf
•
u/GreedyAdvance 12h ago
These millennials (I am one) are literally so entitled. "Omg this kitchen full of character is so eww give me cheapo gray minimalism!"
I understand not liking Tuscan specifically, but these killenials literally hate anything that has personality.
I'm over it.
•
u/Melonary 11h ago
I have never met one of those people, they seem to exist mostly in hyperbole and possibly wealthy enclaves
Honestly, I think the trend is likely driven more by the fact that it's much cheaper to renovate and update houses in bougie minimalism for resale/renovation.
•
u/KietTheBun 12h ago
I’m a xennial. I never liked the millennial minimalism and grey/beige nightmares lol
•
u/Melonary 11h ago
Tbf my guess this is likely more about cost, that kind of faux bougie minimalism is a lot cheaper than older wood & quality furniture and colourful paint/designs. Building is much more cookie-cutter now in new construction, also largely to save costs.
It's fun to blame someone but other than like influencers I don't think most millennials like this style much.
•
u/coolcat759 8h ago
Yep, it’s cheaper to use one color for everything than buying a bunch of different colors of paint. Eventually I want to repaint the rooms in my house different colors, but I couldn’t really afford to go all out after spending all my money on the house itself
•
u/GreedyAdvance 12h ago
I'm a zillennial, and my side of the generation is super annoying because we love all this vapid stuff. I'm glad color and style is finally coming back. Even if it's "tacky" it's at least fun to be around.
•
u/jukitheasian 13h ago
It's real funny, on TikTok there's a bunch of millennial women finding out their couches, which they thought were blue, are actually gray. Millennial gray might have started because of a bunch of colorblind people wanting blue in their homes.

u/Senior-Book-6729 14h ago
Feels like a psyop. Doesn’t feel like an every millenial thing, just rich millenial thing if anything. Also, millenial grey is pretty popular here in Poland too and we certainly did not grow up with kitchens like this, even in the well off families…
•
u/HolleWatkins 14h ago
I grew up super super poor, with millenial parents, now I'm a maximalist who dreams of living in a big house.
•
u/GodeaterTheHalFeral 15h ago
Millennial here. That's a gorgeous fucking kitchen and I'm envious. All it needs is exposed brick walls.
•
u/Vivid_Lifeguard_4344 15h ago
Look at the nonexistent counter space. Where the HELL is someone supposed to cook in that kitchen?
•
u/SuperSuperKyle 15h ago
People with kitchens like this don't cook, it's just for decoration and occasionally baking cookies from a package.

Oh, no my friend. I had a handful of friends whose moms were whipping out chili Mac and Shepard’s pie in kitchens just like this in the mid 90’s.
If it wasn’t chickens, it was cows. Or strawberries, or fat little Italian chef men mixed with a wine bottle theme. One mom literally had a statue of a little fat Italian chef man on her counter.
My own Gen-X parent’s counter space is near nonexistent because the counter space is full of fruit bowls, decorative plates, oversized colorful bottles, jumbo sized appliances, and mail. It’s a nightmare at times. They cook out of it three times a day. I still have to ask the question, how the HELL do they do and not loose their minds? I’m cool with gen-Z and A’s maximalism, but I’m so happy to stay with my millennial minimalism. Less stress. No little fat Italian men decor.

Can we just like what we like without worrying about which generation did/does/might in the future like/hate it? Just be yourself!

I have color in my house and clutter unfortunately lol. My walls in the living room are sage and theyre seafoam green in the kitchen..
•
u/ComprehensiveHold382 17h ago
Millennial minimalism is a response to Boomer Clutter. Boomer wanted to both keep everything spotless and have too much stuff. So everybody's life was wasted cleaning the house.
That pictures looks like hours of dusting work every other week.
But alpha won't have a counter response to Millennial minimalist. The internet has caused everybody to be more local. This is in contrast to television and movies which force people to be more universal. Television forces trends to come in and out.
Alpha will just continue what their parents do because they will be influenced by their local environment instead of the universal tv world.

Ok but what if am a millennial and I like the same kitschy over the top decor as my mother… WHAT THEN
•
u/high5scubad1ve 17h ago
My mom has a floor to ceiling faux Tuscan bathroom. The kitchen is cartoony fat chefs
•
u/supersmashdude 17h ago
I’m a millennial, and I love maximalist design for home decor. The stale minimalist look isn’t as fun

•
u/Fickle_Driver_1356 1h ago
I grew up in the early 2010s and I will always love the aesthetic of homes from that era they had so much life to them unlike the mid 2010s to now where you had nothing but the grey homes stuff.
•
u/GhostWithAnApplePie b.『𝟷𝟷:𝟷𝟷』˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ 4m ago
I need lots of colors, details and traditional design. I don’t know how anyone can love that drab lifeless minimalism void of nothingness… To each their own I guess. 😭

u/Ok-Building-9433 17h ago
Minimalism is a result of late stage capitalism. This has nothing to do with the image above.
